They come in individual gauges, one packet including a pair of tapered rings & a pair of plugs, like this (blurry pic. Sorry). ![]() You only use these if your ears are already pierced & healed, as they don't actually pierce the skin themselves, which is probably the most typical method of gauging. (It can be done with a needle, to create a larger initial hole or the make a small hole larger, but I think that would just be a lot more pain than what's necessary.) You start with a very small gauge (14g is what I started with). Using the tapered ring (& a lubricant), you gently stretch the piercing by placing the ring in the hole-- b/c it's tapered, it's easier to insert the larger middle section of the ring, as it's gradual. You aren't just trying to shove a larger object into a smaller hole. You can leave the rings in, or you can replace them with the plugs, taking either out once a day to clean the piercing & the jewelry. After 3-4 weeks, you're ready to move up to the next gauge. & you just follow that process until the holes are stretched to the desired gauge. Sorry if you weren't actually asking for all that info. I just thought I'd explain the process in case you were interested. |

I'm talking them into a labret / lip piercing when I'm 14, my mum wants me to get my belly button done, and my step sister wants me to get a monroe piercing. ^.^ |
| Cigarettes And Suicide Bleeding on the Floor Age: 35 Gender: Female Posts: 1725 | viva la sam: Lol it's Donna. Surprisingly, that throat piercing was definitely one of the least painful jabs I've ever had! I went into the studio all fired up and ready to go, then as I was laying on the table getting it marked up I started to wig a little... the piercer kept asking me every five seconds 'Are you okay? How are you handling it?' etc until I nearly screamed at her to shut up, I was totally fine, and then I didn't even know she was done, it was that painless. Plus I was about eight weeks pregnant so you would think that the hormones would make me more sensitive to pain (eg, I burned my belly on a frypan last night from leaning too close, it hurt like a bitch for hooouuuurrrs), but no, it was better than getting my nose or lip done. Ah, don't worry about your mum. My parents were so anti-body-mod... I'd been bugging them since the age of 10 for a nose ring (I had my earlobes done at 9 months), and just before I turned 13 they got sick to death of hearing me nag and opted to allow me to get a navel piercing for my 13th birthday. And then I was off and running. I pierced my labret myself at 14 (which I later took out because I didn't have proper jewelery), and I got my earlobes done another two times, my eyebrow pierced and my tragus done, all before I was 17. The more 'out there' ones I got done with my own money after I'd moved out. But it showed me that persistence pays off - once they let you get something relatively simple, it's only a matter of upping the nagging until they let you get something cooler done hahaha. I just thought it was funny when my mum asked me last week, 'So are you going to take all your piercings out for the wedding?' I'm like, 'Woman, have you not lived with me for practically the last 20 years? Surely you know I'll keep them in just to be different from the rest of the blonde-haired, blue-eyed, meringue-dress brigade,' and she was like, 'Oh. Yeah. I forgot how non-conformist you are.' |

| Cigarettes And Suicide Bleeding on the Floor Age: 35 Gender: Female Posts: 1725 | yoey962: There is the labret, which unlike a generic lip piercing is placed slightly below the lip, typically dead centre. (btw that's a super-old pic of me, my labret is in the middle. It doesn't show it as well as some pics, as it looks to be nestled up against the lip, but it's a few millimetres down my chin, if you get my gist.) Or there is the lowbret, which is just placed much further down on the chin region, but still punches through into the mouth (it sits against the gums, much like a labret - lip piercings rub either the top of your gums or your teeth). In other news, I'm trying to convince teh husband to let me get either a bridge or septum (preferably septum) piercing. He's all 'You're gonna be a freaking mother in a couple of months! You need to quit with the body mods, you've got enough alreadyyyy!' Too many mods is never enough mods. |

| Mrs.Halloween Salute You in Your Grave Age: 30 Gender: Female Posts: 3176 | jenny; bad luck girl: thank you so much for that information!! that's kind of exactly what i was looking for, but it's difficult to ask someone to explain guaging to you and have them understand exactly what you need to know xD. once you've started using the tapered rings, say you've had them in for a couple of days; can you put the plugs in, or will the hole still be too small, and it be too difficult to put the plugs in just yet? [if you get what i mean] and after you have your ears stretched to 14g, and you go up a size, do you still use the tapering rings to ease your ears into the guaging or do you go straight into using the next sized plug? |
| lux lisbon. Always Born a Crime Age: 35 Gender: Female Posts: 5826 | Mrs.Halloween: I actually replace the rings with the plugs within the same day that I stretch the holes. The tapers are really only necessary for the initial stretch, since the plugs aren't tapered & wouldn't easily slide into the holes, at first. You can leave the rings in for as long as you want to, really, if you like the way they look, but you don't have to leave them in for very long at all if you want to put in the plugs. & each gauge (in the brand that I buy, at least, which I think is pretty standard at every Hot Topic) comes with its own rings & plugs. So with each new gauge, you use the rings that come with that set, first, then you can change to the plugs from that set. |

| Mrs.Halloween Salute You in Your Grave Age: 30 Gender: Female Posts: 3176 | jenny; bad luck girl: thanks i've been wanting to guage my ears for a while but i never could find any proper information about how i would go about doing it myself [i like to research a piercing a lot before i seriously think about getting it done]. hopfully mes parents won't freak when i ask them if i can start to guage my ears. the set that you get, with the tapering rings looks good, so i'll probably have a search on the internet and see if i can find a british site/shop that sells it, or just order over from Hot Topic. also, do you have to buy lubricant seperately? and where might you buy it; are there special brands for stretching? [sorry for all my lame questions xD] |
| lux lisbon. Always Born a Crime Age: 35 Gender: Female Posts: 5826 | Mrs.Halloween: Don't worry about it! I researched forever before I started gauging mine, so I totally understand. I actually just use a tiny bit of petroleum jelly as a lubricant. Just put a very little bit on the ring (not where you'll be holding it, so your fingers won't slip) before you slide it into the hole. Make sure you clean it right away, though, with a saline solution (like a regular solution for soft contact lenses-- none of that "no rub" "express cleaning" or w/e stuff. The bottle should say "saline solution" ). Leaving the petroleum jelly on your ears could cause infection, since they're essentially in the same condition they are when they're first pierced. Just leave the jewelry in your ears, just this once, & use a q-tip wet with saline solution to clean all around the jewelry, back & front, until the petroleum jelly is gone. After that, you can just clean them once a day (too much cleaning could dry the skin out)-- take out the jewelry, clean the lobes & the jewelry, & put the jewelry back. |
| Mrs.Halloween Salute You in Your Grave Age: 30 Gender: Female Posts: 3176 | ^ thankyou i shall definitely shop around and see if i can get some plugs and tapering rings from a british shop =]. in place of saline can you use boiled water and pure salt (i know how to mix it cause i've done salt soaks on a tragus piercing before)? [essentially, is that what saline is?] |
| lux lisbon. Always Born a Crime Age: 35 Gender: Female Posts: 5826 | ^ Yea, that's basically what a saline solution is-- I just never knew how to make it, so I bought mine. heh. |
| Ami von Grimm Banned Age: 28 Gender: Female Posts: 13505 | My parents would probably freak out if I get a piercing. But I want plugs. And maybe a lip piercing. My sister's boyfriend has a piercing in his wrist; just tought of that. |
| girl interrupted. Salute You in Your Grave Age: 27 Gender: Female Posts: 2792 | Oh yes, just a little tip. NEVER TRY PIERCING YOUR NOSE WITH AN EARRING. IT HURTS A LOT. AND IT GETS INFECTED AND CHANCES ARE, YOU'LL MAKE A MESS OF IT. Much less paiful to get it done in a shop with proper jewellery, not earrings. And don't use safety pins to pierce lips or ears. My friends and cousins have both tried that stunt. They complained for hours and it bled an awful hell of a lot. [/rant] |
| SilentScreams Awake and Unafraid Age: 29 Gender: Female Posts: 14775 | i have my ears done once. i'm going to get my nose done, and my eyebrow[s] done once or twice. and some more done on my ears. maybe for my 16th b-day i should ask for the nose piercing? maybe. eh, i dont know. haha |
