| onlynotreally. Salute You in Your Grave Age: 31 Gender: Female Posts: 3601 | i was thinking about maybe getting my bellybutton pierced in a few years... doesn't it itch a lot and get infected easily though? |
| Belle! At The Disco Salute You in Your Grave Age: 33 Gender: Female Posts: 2750 | Cigarettes And Suicide: THANK YOU! An thanks to everyone else who helped out with my Septum piercings question, You guys are great. Ohh and one more Anyone got any idea how much it costs to get it done? And do you think they would do it to a 14 yr old without a parent signature? |
| Annaundead; Awake and Unafraid Age: 28 Gender: Female Posts: 12083 | Dance.To.This.Beat.:Not unless you can go to a place where, if you're 16, they'll do it without needing parental permission. You can pretend you're 16. Otherwise, yes. Depending on where you go, I reckon £20 - £25. I don't know for septum tbh. But roughly around there. [= |
| Belle! At The Disco Salute You in Your Grave Age: 33 Gender: Female Posts: 2750 | What do you mean by "Pretend" to be 16, Wouldn't they ask for like...a birth certificate or something? |
| Annaundead; Awake and Unafraid Age: 28 Gender: Female Posts: 12083 | Dance.To.This.Beat.:Not if they think you look 16. Like if you walk in an go, "Can you pierce me septum mate" They'll go "How old are you" And you simply say "16." |

| Cigarettes And Suicide Bleeding on the Floor Age: 35 Gender: Female Posts: 1725 | Doodles: There's a couple different types of retainers, yeah. More commonly known is the septum retainer, which is a u-shaped piece of metal that flips up inside the nostrils so you can't see the piercing: ![]() The other type of retainer is clear plastic that is inserted through other piercings (anything from eyebrows to lips to ear cartilage) with the purpose of making a piercing less obvious, say, for work or whatever, you don't have to run the risk of letting your piercing heal over so you can get paid - you just pop in a retainer for a few hours and people only know the difference if they look closely: Eyebrow: ![]() Nose Navel Labret/Lip: ![]() As you can see, they're pretty flimsy and don't have screw- or captive-bead attachments (with the exception of the navel bar, which is a screw attachment), so I don't recommend they be left in for a period of days, and I definitely wouldn't recommend you sleep with a plastic retainer in, as the risk of them coming loose and being inhaled/swallowed/lost is a high one. But yeah, I hope that helped out a bit, like I said wearing a septum retainer for days or weeks is totally fine, but plastic retainers should only be worn for work/school or for occasions when you can't have piercings visible. |

| XLaurenXLoveX Killjoy Age: 28 Gender: Female Posts: 94 | R2D2: Yea it would be a pretty bad idea. Theres a risk for it starting to close up by then. And when you try to put the ring or whatever back in it will probably hurt like a mother and possibly bleed.. Im hoping to get my belly button pierced soon (does it hurt?! and can you go swimming after you get it done). I have two piercings in each ear lobe, I used to have a piercing in the cartilage of my left ear but it got infected because I went swimming in a nasty lake with it... |
| SilentScreams Awake and Unafraid Age: 29 Gender: Female Posts: 14775 | Cigarettes And Suicide: thank you. and I got it back in.....but idk if its infected still. so should I set something up wiht my DR so we can find out. so it wont get worse.....like.....killing me?!?!?!?!?! gah idk. i think i should....and I've been cleaning them ALOT lately. so yeah. tahnks. =] |
| Belle! At The Disco Salute You in Your Grave Age: 33 Gender: Female Posts: 2750 | With the retainer, Would you be able to put like...A lip one in a septum piercing? Or is there just like...a straight across bar I could put in for work? |
| Cigarettes And Suicide Bleeding on the Floor Age: 35 Gender: Female Posts: 1725 | R2D2: Chyeah, pretty bad idea. Piercings need to pretty much just be left alone for a good six weeks or so before you can safely go switching jewellery without causing some damage to the healing flesh, and a bit more time (I usually say about 8 - 10 weeks, more depending on how fast a healer you are) before you can leave it out for a lengthy period of time. If you need to take it out, as much as I wouldn't recommend doing it so soon after piercing, I'd advise you use a clear plastic retainer (if the issue is about needing to hide it from someone/thing) - my post above shows you what they look like and they're very cheap, and available from wherever you get your lip pierced. If you go that route, be extremely gentle when removing and inserting the jewellery, make sure to sterilise the retainer before and after use (and the original jewellery before re-inserting it on Tuesday), and yeah, like I said, treat it like a freaking detonator that's set to go off at the slightest jolt - if you aren't very careful with it, you're likely to scratch/injure the healing flesh inside the tunnel as you're inserting/removing jewellery, and that can cause infection or lengthen the healing process. And, if getting a lip piercing, get it pierced with a straight bar rather than a ring, as a ring will cause the hole to heal crooked. Go with the straight bar, then when it's healed you can wear a ring in it and it will sit much better than if you'd had it heal crooked. XLaurenXLoveX: As with all piercings, the pain factor depends on your pain threshold, the area of the body being pierced, etc. Bellybuttons on some people are extremely sensitive, other people not so much - poke around yours with a Q-tip and if you feel nauseous or similar, you'll have a tiny bit more trouble than some people, but mine's really bad like that and I didn't have any problems with the actual piercing, just felt a little sick afterwards. If you're apprehensive, the bellybutton is an area where you can safely use numbing cream beforehand (unlike, say, the eyebrow, where the piercer needs it to have full sensation to ensure they don't pinch a nerve with the clamps, which means they might strike it and cause slight paralysis), and you'll be set. As far as swimming goes, (and this goes for anybody with a new piercing) chlorinated water is a big no-no for at least four weeks after getting a new piercing. Swimming at the beach I actually recommend, because the salt is at a concentration that really aids in the healing process - my navel was taking weeks and weeks to heal, and was still weepy, red and sore... I went to the beach and within three days it was fully healed! It clears up infection and does wonders for the skin's regeneration process. Salt-water pools I'm not 100% on, but I'd assume if they're a similar salt concentration to the ocean, they'd be fine - just check what other chemicals, if any, the pool's owners use to keep it clean. Freah-water (lakes etc) I also wouldn't know about (I've never swum in one), but to be on the safe side (especially if the water's not crystal clear and running) just whack a waterproof dressing over it for the duration of your swim, and make sure to clean it afterwards in case any water does seep in and get into the piercing. That also goes for chlorinated water - if you really have to swim in it, stick a waterproof dressing over the piercing and check it frequently to make sure it hasn't come loose or leaked. Freak.09:Well seeing as I can't take a look at it myself, setting up an appointment to go see your doctor can't hurt at all. I mean, either he gives you a prescription for some anti-bacterial ointment or some antibiotics, or he says it'll be fine left to its own devices and your mind is put at ease. It's an earlobe piercing, right? I've never heard of a case where earlobe infection has turned into something potentially deadly, but just to be on the safe side go have it checked out and if they advise you to take it out, do so. Once the infection clears up and the wound is healed, you can go get it pierced again, just be more scrupulous with the care of it next time around But yeah, go get it looked at as soon as you can, and in the meantime try to keep it clean with tea-tree oil (it's stronger than saline and will stave off a bad infection, but it stings like a bitch so don't be scurred lol) and just keep an eye on it. Good luck! |
