Boobs of Steel:
How bad does it hurt to get your cartilage [sp?] pierced?
Some people have said it hurts really bad and others have said it isn't so bad and I have a half way pain tolerance.
Also, does it hurt to get a third piercing in your ear a third time?
I have two on each side then I might get a third one right above them.

'Cartilage' is such a generic term - I can't say how much it'll hurt unless given a specific location. Besides that, pain is such an individual thing, and yeah, any piercing hurts - how much is what varies.
So, with ear cartilage, apparently the outer rims of your ear isn't that painful, and soft cartilage (anti-tragus etc) is pretty good in the painless stakes too. It's the really hard bits of cartilage, and areas of the inner ear, that tend to be painful.
Eg - This wouldn't hurt much at all (until you start getting around the top of the ear, then it gets sensitive, and I'm talking about the outer piercings, not the big rook one in the left side of the picture - that might hurt)
This, however, (from my personal experience) feels like having an axe buried in the side of your head.

And by third piercing, I assume you mean earlobe? No, they don't hurt - well, they hurt as much as the first two earlobe piercings hurt - which is just a little sting.
Boobs of Steel:
So, if I wanted both at the same time, could I get the third piercings and the cartilage done at the same time, or like the same day?
You could get them done all at the same time if you wanted - I'd personally recommend you ask the piercer to use a needle on your earlobes rather than the piercing gun. I don't like them. Worst piece of piercing equipment ever invented. They can cause a lot of problems.

bedussey:
Is it possible to get your nose re-pierced, in the same spot as the original piercing?
Like, after the hole has been closed for about...a year?
If the hole is completely healed over, I don't see why not. I wanted to get my lip pierced in the same spot as where I'd previously had it done, but because the hole had scarred a certain way, I had to get it either just above or just below, or just beside the original piercing. If you can't see where it was, or there's a flat piece of scar tissue, you should be fine. But if you're like me and the piercing has closed up, but still has a pucker mark and looks like you could still get jewellery in there, you'll have to choose a different spot.

I did that exact thing. If your piercer does it then no problems. Just eat and drink a soft drink before you go, because I didn't eat or drink enough, and I almost passed out by the time I had a hole in my cartilage.
And yeah, needles all the way.

Thanks for the advice you guys. :]
One more question, why should I have them use a needle? Does it hurt less? I had the first two done with the gun and it was fine.

Needles hurt the same.
But they are more accurate with placing.
Piercing guns dont always get the exact placement right.
And by problems I think that she meant that the arent sterilized in an auto clave. just wiped down with alcohol pads which doesnt sterilize things very well. so you are more likely to get an infection

And cartilage piercings dont hurt at all while being pierced. I actually enjoy the feeling. But then again Im wierd. They feel better than getting your lobes pierced. They just hurt afterward and you probably wont be able to sleep on that ear for a while and you'll want to keep your hair up since getting your hair untangled from the back of the earring hurts pretty bad.

^^ Piercing guns, in addition to not being capable of proper sterilisation (and honestly, it's not like the piercer asks their clients to provide evidence that they don't have, say, Hep C or something that could be transferred through un-autoclaved equipment), have a few other negative things going for them.
One of these things is the fact that they work by using blunt force trauma - the post of an earring isn't sharp enough to cleanly pierce through the flesh and therefore can cause not only bruising and crushed tissue (which can lead to infection, worst case dead tissue which needs to be surgically removed), but painful cysts, which happens when a chunk of the outer skin gets stuck inside the earlobe and walls itself off, forming a big lump of scar tissue that can cause pain, infection, lots of fun things. I've had cysts surgically removed, and while having them removed is no big deal really (a day in hospital and a few stitches in the back of your ear), I'd rather have not had to go to the trouble.

As well as that, nearly everyone I know who has had their ears pierced with a gun, has suffered injury when the earring either doesn't go all the way through on the first punch, and the piercer automatically pulls the gun away without checking, or the earring has caught in the gun and when the piercer pulls the gun away, it tears the earlobe and causes some fairly painful injuries. A close friend who got her ear pierced with a gun, nearly had the bottom of her lobe torn off by a piercer who wasn't concentrating and just ripped the gun away from her ear without realising that the earring was caught in the gun. It required surgery to correct and now she's got a scarred earlobe.

Granted, all these situations are worst-case and relatively unlikely, but they can and do happen. The only time I support the use of piercing guns is on babies who can't sit still for more than a few seconds - and besides, their earlobes are tiny and very thin, not like our big fleshy ones as teens/adults, so the spring-loaded punch doesn't do any harm unless it's infected or the piercer makes the mistake of wrenching it away afterwards without gently tugging it to see that it's not stuck.
Ultimately it's your decision, and a lot of people prefer to go with guns because it's really quick and simple, but I will never let anybody come within twenty feet of me with a loaded piercing gun in hand.
And of course, anybody thinking of getting a nose piercing or ear cartilage piercing with a gun is absolutely crazy - either that or really uninformed. But now you can consider yourselves informed so I don't want to hear any stories about getting your nose pierced with a gun *shakes finger*
Lol. Basically, you're a big kid now, and more than capable of sitting still for a few minutes, so I'd recommend you get them done with an 18gauge needle - the risk of contamination, injury and the like is far, far less than with a piercing gun.

Whoah. I feel like a complete dumbarse now. I got all the piercings on my ears (apart from the one that's like, that little bit of cartiledge in front of the ear... I don't remember the right name for it lol) done with guns!
I never really thought anything of it though, because I thought ear piercing was just a generic thing.

Anyway, what I originally came on this thread for was to ask a question:
One of my ear piercings is infected, I honestly don't know the proper name for the piercing, but it's basically in the cartiledge on the outer rim of the ear, and at the top.
Would it be ok to use the cleaning stuff that I have for my surface piercings? Or would I need something else?

Lol don't worry, surprisingly few people are aware of the negatives of piercing guns - as you said, seeing as they are performed in hairdressing salons etc, not a lot of people realise how complicated earlobe piercing is. Truthfully it's not quite as tricky as some piercings, but it is still a body piercing and therefore needs to be taken pretty seriously.

What kind of cleaning stuff do you have for your surface piercings? I personally wouldn't use any commercial cleaner consisting of alcohol etc, as they tend to be really drying - rather, try saline solution (salt water, I think it's about 1 tablespoon of water to one cup of warm water, I mix it slightly stronger myself to get a bit more kick out of it) or 15% solution of tea-tree oil (which is available from supermarkets like Woolworths, just look for 'Melaleuca 15%' on the label somewhere). Tea-tree will sting like a biatch, but cleans up an infection so efficiently you won't know it was there. Smile

Looking back, I can totally see why piercing guns are a no-no. I had a bit of trouble with them when I got my 3rd set on my lobes done- it got stuck when the earring was halfway through, and then the woman doing it pretty much ripped it out of my ear, and pierced it again. My god that hurt like hell. Ended up getting really badly infected and I had to take it out, but it didn't occur to me at the time that it was because guns are dodgy lol.

Honestly, I have no idea what it is- it's in a small white bottle with pink & green stuff on it lol. It worked really well on the surface piercings though, but would the concentration needed be the same for both?
It's just, my ear gets knocked around a hell of a lot and barely ever gets infected, while my nape & whatever-the-other-one-is-called get infected reeeallllllly easily

does anyone know if there is an age limit on bellybutton piercings in north carolina?
because my mom's friend said you had to be 14,but i never found anything that said that.
i found something that said some piercers would not do it if you are under 14,but that some would.
so does anyone know for sure?

Theres really no age limit its just that some piercers will refuse to pierce it before 14. Why? Because then your not growing as fast and are less likely to end up with a slit in your stomach. Thats why I have to wait another week before my mom will even consider it (actually 5 days..yay)

Thanks for the advice Cigarettes And Suicide.

Anyway, I don't really see why you would want to get your belly button pierced before you are 16.
You're still young, if I were you I would wait until I was at least 14 anyway, just to make sure that you're really ready for it.

Yea.
Ive been waiting two years to be able to get my belly pierced and it still might not happen. My mom is just worried its going to get infected/rejected. Because thats what happened with my last piercing, in my cartilage it my body rejected it pretty much. Like my uncle has 2502385027648 tattoos and piercings so he knows a lot about it. And he said that the bubble forming was my body trying to push it out and to just take it out and let it heal and maybe try it again once its healed but this time go to a tatoo parlor (one he went to thats rly good) and get it done there.

So my mom doesnt want to risk my belly piercing doing that and me being left with a scar.

Right, so I read that 2g is when your ears don't go back to normal, and I've always foillowed that rule.
But my friend has 7/18th or 7/8th or whichever gauge size starts with a seven, and he took his out, and his ears are normal again.
Is he like miracle person or does it depend on the person of whaaat?

I just got another hole in my earlobe today, and i got this thng that described how i should take care of it.
It says, that I should clean it once a day. Does that mean that I have to take the earring out?
Nooonononononononononono.
NEVER remove the jewellery from a piercing until it is fully healed unless you intend to let it grow over (ie you don't want the piercing anymore). Taking the jewellery out not only allows germs to get in a lot easier, but causes irritation and injury when reinserting the jewellery.
If the earring is a sleeper (ring), cleaning is super-easy. Just use saline solution, dab it around the piercing (front and back) with a cotton bud (q-tip), then drip some on the ring and turn it so the liquid goes into the flesh. Do that a few times a day and you should be laughing.
If the earring is a standard post, it's a litte trickier, but just do the swabbing on front and back on the skin, push the earring forward and drip saline on it, then pull it out at the back a little and drip saline on the back, pushing it back in so the liquid goes in. Make sure to turn the earring in a circle three or four times to ensure it doesn't stick (crusties are a natural part of healing and can cause injury if you allow the earring to get stuck, then pull at it), and then leave it alone. Also, don't be rough with it - earlobes are fairly delicate.
Avoid chlorinated pools (swimming at the beach, however, is a gret idea as the salt water will be a huge help in healing) for a few weeks, try not to let your hair get tangled in it if you have long hair (keeping it tied back is preferable as oils and product in your hair can irritate and cause infection), and you should be pretty well right Smile
