Dujo and I decided that there should only be one religion thread. The INO Chamber one is spammed, so we're starting off on a new page.

How do you feel about religion? Are you religious?

Here are some definitions:

Atheist - One who disbelieves or denies the existence of God or gods.

Agnostic - One who believes that it is impossible to know whether there is a God or not.

Buddhism - The teaching of Buddha that life is permeated with suffering caused by desire, that suffering ceases when desire ceases, and that enlightenment obtained through right conduct, wisdom, and meditation releases one from desire, suffering, and rebirth.

Pagan/Heathen - One who does not believe in the god of an organized religion.

I'm not really religious, just because my family never took me to church.
I sometimes believe there is a god, sometimes not =/.
I'm so undecided in this issue.
It really really confuses me.

Yay! Another Religion thread! I love theological discussions. I am so interested in other's veiws.

And I'd like to say, Yara, I adore you for knowing so much about other religions and how much you study it. I've seen some of your posts in earlier Religion threads and you have so much knowledge about everything. I am amazed!
Kudos.
And love.

Anyways, I am a Christian and believe in one God, though I am ashamed of the majority of the people who call themselves Christians. They are such airheads. Seriously. They think they're better than everyone else. Grr.

Thank you Suzi.

Do you think your dad has influenced you much in your beliefs since he is a pastor?

I think religion is a great way to meet new people and express different things. I dont care what religion people belong to and dont like people trying to lead others to the "right" faith. Im Hindu, and quite passionate in my chosen religion.

I guess I suppose so. I haven't really had much of a choice which religion I could pick. He'd be so angry if I strayed from Christianity. I don't even want to imagine what he'd do...but, I have been thinking that Taoism sounds pretty cool. Nice and peaceful, that stuff is. =)

So yeah, I guess it has had a large effect on me. But I just wish I had more freedom to choose for myself.

But another thing is...I am seriously afraid of Hell. I was raised to believe in it's eternal horrors. I was also raised to believe that only Christians go to Heaven. (I don't agree. I think anyone who follows their religion accordingly will go to their religion's God's heaven [if that makes any sense]) Hehe.
But yeah. =)

Hmm... the religion that has fascinated me the most is what ancient Egyptians believed, about mummification, Isis and Osiris, the afterlife... I wish I knew the official name x_x

Passive Atheist.

I believe I already posted this, but for the sake of cotnuity i'll do it again. I say Passive, because i'm not your stereotypical Atheist who takes a big vendetta against Christians, wants to ban Christmas or is an idiotic, nihilistic cynic.

In any case, Atheism isn't actually a religion.

I was raised Roman Catholic, although neither of my parents belong to that sect of Christianity. I'm not particularly bitter about that, even if I do think Christianities views on most subjects are highly contestable.

I think it's a great thing to have so many different people from so many different religions. Where I was brought up, You were either Catholic or not. There were no Buddihists or Hindus or Wiccans or anything. This board is very mulitcultural. I always learn something new when I log in. Its quite mind-numbing how amazing it is.

I do have a question though, 'cause it has to do with religion, even though there is already a thread on it. What does the bible actually say about the Apocalypse?

Ok this is really pissing me off. I know quite a lot about ancient Egyptian religion, but I can't for the life of me remember if it has a name or not, and what that name would be.

There are many different types, no?

There isn't just one religion, one name, but several different sects. There were over 2,000 different gods worshipped, I believe. I know there was a large sector based around Thebes, I remeber reading about it. I can't remeber the name either.

With so far back, and so many people, it's hard to keep a religion contained and controlled. Egyptian religion was based on polytheism, or the worship of many gods.

You know what I don't understand? How can some people, I'm talking about particually Jews here, How they can be so devoted to their faith after so many things have happened to them. I mean, an entire race has been almost targeted, and yet these people still believe in god. I find that amazing.
[You guys were talking about Egyptions and that reminded me of Exodus and WWII and Nazis and that....]

Okay, I posted this in the original thread, but I like what I was trying to say.

I'm a born and raised Roman Catholic, I love Jesus and He loves me, I believe in God, and I pray often.
HOWEVER, I do not take the Bible literally. Catholics do not look at the Bible as fact, but rather as a basis for faith. Other sects of Christianity (Pennecostal, Mormon, Protestant, etc.) do actually take some or all of the Bible literally.
The Gospels were written almost a hundred years after Jesus' death, so they follow the old saying, "When the legend becomes fact, write the legend." Quite honestly, I believe Jesus existed, that He was divine, and He died for everyone's sins to be forgiven, but I do not believe that everything written in the Gospels actually happened. He probably carried out miracles, but the story of the paralegic probably did not happen/did not happen the way it was told.
Religion is all about faith because you are trusting in something you just don't know exists. It's a bit like that trust building excercise you do sometimes when you fall back and someone catches you. Do you know for sure that the person will catch you? No. Do you know for sure they won't? No. It's all about faith and trust. If you can trust in a supposed heavenly body, and have faith that it will "catch" you, then you can believe in religion.

I was also raised as a Roman Catholic.
I do believe in Jesus, God, etc.
However, I don't believe, nor agree with, the Catholic teachings.
When I say that, I mean, I don't agree with the fact that they discriminate against homosexuals.
As one example.
Therefore, I can't call myself a complete Catholic, even if I've taken things from the religion.

I agree with Rosalie; Religion is all about having faith in something.
Of course, no one can prove that there was a man named Jesus, who practiced miracles.
But then, people that believe in religion of any kind have immense faith.

Rosalie, that is why I love you.
You are so smart.
I have been waiting for a Catholic user on INO to say that for so long. It makes so much sense and I wouldn't argue with you at all.
Well done Rosalie. You have just confirmed that there are smart American Catholics out there and that they aren't all just a bunch of Hicks

I was raised Catholic but I didn't agree with alot of they're teachings. So now I don't have a religion. I like to learn about different religions.
