I don't think the Bible is really out of date.
I mean, sure, some of the stuff in there is blatantly wrong and stupid, because that's what men made up themselves when they were writing it, but the basic message of peace, love, patience, and respect is timeless.

I agree. But Christian fundamentalists take the Bible exactly as its worded and that leads to a lot of bad judgements. They become so obsessed with banning books, music, protesting, suing, judging and condemning everyone and everything that's bad that they forget the one message which is love.

Yeah. My Religion teacher always says, "Don't take the Bible too literally!" and I believe that. Because if you do that, you're gonna get mixed up about a lot of stuff.

Woah, you guys have religion teachers.

But yeah, I agree. Even in Hinduism, you're told to never take the Gita or Ramayan or whatever too seriously, you'll hurt your little heads.

Flat out:
Don't be a prick, eat some Holy Food and sing! Very Happy

suzi; bitchcakes.:
Yay! Another Religion thread! I love theological discussions. I am so interested in other's veiws.

And I'd like to say, Yara, I adore you for knowing so much about other religions and how much you study it. I've seen some of your posts in earlier Religion threads and you have so much knowledge about everything. I am amazed!
Kudos.
And love.

Anyways, I am a Christian and believe in one God, though I am ashamed of the majority of the people who call themselves Christians. They are such airheads. Seriously. They think they're better than everyone else. Grr.

I think the Bible preaches a lot of hate and intolerance.
Like God wiping out entire nations.
And that thing about forcing Abraham to sacrifice his son always pisses me off.
I mean, I know his plan, but it's still cruel.
And what about Job?
God kinda... isn't very nice.

Well..yeah. If you take it that way. There's also this law in the Old Testament which goes: "An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth." It's kinda disturbing. Then in the New Testament, Jesus goes, "Love your enemies, as I love you." Weird!

I think I can explain that a bit, at least, from my POV.

The first one, An eye for an eye, wasn't to make people punish others,
but rather to reflect upon their own actions and realize that what you give
out will come back to you, so if you hurt others, you will be hurt.
Maybe not here and now, but when it matters most, type of thing.

The second one is a softening of that, Love your enemies, kind of like,
realize that they are human too and treat others as you would be treated.
The whole, your enemies need not be your enemies, and if you are kind
to them they may be kind to you thing.

Ever play that "telephone" game as a kid? The one where you sit in a circle and whisper something to someone, then that person whispers it to the next person and it goes around the circle until the last person has to stand up and repeat what he heard? The phrase or word is always mixed up, mis-heard and mis-translated. So it's the same with the Bible. Have faith in your religion (if you have one) but don't let yourself get caught up in the details because you never know how much of the truth is really accurate.

^Exactly. Not that I base my faith around a Kevin Smith movie, (except I totally do) but like it was said in Dogma, it's better to have ideas rather than beliefs; ideas are easier to change. It doesn't matter what you have faith in, just that you have faith.

I read or heard that "love your enemies as I loved you" means that you shoud try to treat well and love your enemies, beucase what's the point of treating the ones you love good when you already treat them that way? From my point of view it's about finding the positive things about people you hate and taking out the negative ones. Does that make any sense?

People that annoy me are the people that the first thing they ask you is: "what's your religion?" and if you say something they don't agree with they will say that you're going to hell or something like that. That's just rude.

un-FAITH_ful:
isn't that contradictory though?
i am a devout athiest so i strongly believe in evolution.
the whole god thing doesnt make sense.

I totally agree...I mean c'mon. GOD made everything? Nah. Disgust I'm not saying we ARE monkeys...but I'm saying that we are very similar...and I'm pretty sure a lot of the religious people are saying that it was just a coinsidence(sp?) or something like that...

I believe in God AND evolution. God created everything and it's a proven fact that species do evolve into better species. My line of thinking is that maybe he made us in a very rough format and set us on earth to evolve into what we are today. We are like diamonds, we start out as ugly lumps of coal deep inside the earth and thousand of years time we turn into something much much better.

Well, I've been raised Christian my whole life, but now that I've gotten older, I see things in a new perspective.
I believe in God. I believe that He created the Universe and Earth. But sometimes I just doubt.
I mean, isn't it impossive for someone to create the whole world in only 6 days (7 th = resting day), and it all turned out to be so perfect?
It's all so unbelievable. So overwhelming. No human being can never figure this out, no matter who smart he or she is. But that's really enough for me to keep on believing...

There's to much nothing into it and not enough sumting.

Breathtaking.:
I'm Catholic and yes, I believe that God made the world in 7 earth days. I believe that Jesus was crucified and then went to heaven with his Father with body and soul. It's hurtful that people make fun of your religion while you are respecting theirs.

I think that everyone should believe in a higher being. People may believe in evolution, but where did the monkeys came from? Where did the cell came from? Where did the universe came from? Where did everything came from? There has to be someone in a higher level who did that. None of this could be done out of nowhere. (This is just my point of view)

Okay...well first of all: That doesn't mean that GOD actually does exist.

Second: If GOD does exist then he created the aliens too. And well...that would be impossible.

Third: If GOD does exist he wouldn't be so demanding as it says in the bible and stuff...if we ARE his children he should love us no matter what. Not just send us to hell if we made a little boo boo.

Fourth: I'm not insulting anyone's religion...I'm just commenting on it. This is all my opinion...I don't believe in hell, heaven, GOD, Jesus, The Devil, Angels, or anything related to that.

I just believe that when we die...nothing happens...that's it.

We're dead.
