I've had this on-going discussion with my husband about why beauty is important.
He tells me that it shouldn't matter what anyone else thinks about you, or the expectations of people. Spending an hour every morning doing your make up is totally pointless, because when it comes down to it, the only one that has to like who you are is you yourself. Nobody else matters.
If you're comfortable with who you are, people will notice that and like you for it. If you don't put on make up, and don't try so hard, and someone ends up not liking you for it, then that's his/her problem.
It's in my opinion that in this day and age, and society, beauty is very important. It's the difference between getting a job or not. People judge you by the way you look. If you're absolutely gorgeous, you get treated better. I know this from experience.
What do you think? Does the outside count? Is the inside just as important? What is beauty to you? |

But it's a shame that it's the other way around. |

Having said that, I am incredibly vain and spend hours in front of the mirror every morning. I don't like how I look, but I feel that has something to do with the media putting pressure on people to look absolutely perfect.
People usually judge you by how you look because it is the first thing they see about you, which is stupid because there are people I know who look "different" and are the nicest people you could know. Some of the pretty people are incredibly stuck-up and snobby sometimes, not all of them though. |

What is the difference between someone who is pretty, and someone who is beautiful?
Is being pretty just looking nice on the outside, and is beautiful being nice looking on the inside and outside? |

Age: 32 Gender: Female Posts: 6503 | June 4th, 2006 at 03:10pm I think that overall, the inside is more important by far, but it DOES help to have a pretty exterior. I mean, you can have a drop-dead-gorgeous body with rotten insides (and vice versa)...but some people probably wouldn't trust anyone (with a job for instance) if it looked like they were lacking hygiene, lived on the street, and were likely to steal you wallet.
Yeah, I know, this may look all jumbled up and confusing looking, but it makes sense to me. |

People can say "The inside is what counts" as much as they want, but scientists have discovered that even babies look longer at people who are considered attractive. |

Age: 32 Gender: Female Posts: 6503 | June 4th, 2006 at 03:18pm ^^Yeah, I've kinda noticed that. The "not-so-pretty" people in our school are often laughed at and brought down (not by me...I don't care so much about people's looks) and the "pretty" people get all the guys hanging off of them. Hm. |

Age: - Gender: - Posts: 684 | June 4th, 2006 at 03:18pm People tend to judge you on your appearance because that's usually the first thing they see, like Venom__ said. Once you get to know a person, then's the time to 'judge' them on their 'inside'. Someone told me it's in our genes to be attracted to people whose bodies are in proportion, so I suppose we can't really help liking beautiful people. But there's so much more to people than their appearance. |

It's in our nature to judge people by how attractive they are. But you shouldn't judge someone on appearances alone. |

Age: 32 Gender: Female Posts: 6503 | June 4th, 2006 at 03:20pm I've even noticed that the teachers are gernerally nicer to the "pretty" people. I don't like this at all. I find it unfair. It's all in the genetics and most people can't help it.
But, I prefer to view beauty as something that comes from inside and shines outward. |

I'm not sure if this will be helpful, but when you really look at someone considered "beautiful," their features are almost completely symmetrical. |

Age: 31 Gender: Female Posts: 40307 | June 4th, 2006 at 03:21pm Beauty to me is how you are on the inside. It's true, you waste your time putting on loads of make-up in the morning, trying to impress others and trying to make people think that you're better looking than them.
If you're skinny and have a pretty face, you'll get more respect from certain groups of people who focus on such topics like those.
If you're not, then you won't. It's simple. It's how life is nowadays, and how everyone lives it. |

I’m not saying you have to be drop dead gorgeous but you don’t wanna walk around look like A trash can. I think everyone should put up some effort into make them self look good. If it's for job reasons or something like that then yes, I expect you look your best on the job. Like I said it not so much about be a beautiful person, just look descent! |

I wasn't asking the question in the sense that I wanted to know, but it was rather presented to make everyone think. It's an opinion question. |

Age: 29 Gender: Female Posts: 5762 | June 4th, 2006 at 03:34pm Beauty to me is having a great personality.
Being sweet and caring and just an all around nice person.
But to the rest of socioty beauty is having long, wavy hair, perfect skin, amazing curves and straight, white teeth.
I truly don't give a hoot what you look like, hell, you could be half dog, but as long as you're a nice person I don't care. Beauty to me, all rests on your personality. Because then the inner beauty comes out. |

To me, my five year old niece is pretty.
Her mother is beautiful.
Pretty is not serious. Pretty is fun.
Beautiful is in so much more than just the outside. It's the way the person presents herself. Her personality. |
