I think this song is either about how someone 9maybe Gerard, maybe someone else), screwed up a lot in their life. How he sings "If I'm so wrong, how can you listen all night long".

But then again, Other times when I listen to it, I think it's about people looking back at their lives and how they might have had such great times when they were younger (like as teenagers possibly), and how they can never go back to those times.

Plus, I think either one of those fits in with the album theme really well.. But hose are just my opinions.

my friend christie did a great interpretation of it. She thought it might be about the patient reflecting on his life.

It goes through the uselessness of the world, watching the replay of our lives when we die which started okay and got stuffed up in the end...the agony caused by peer pressure, how you cannot trust people who you call friends but are not really friends, getting in trouble and the excitement of risk taking, high school bullying and trying to be successful in the world. These are memories and some nostalgia.

Then Gerard goes on to sing about being 'wrong' meaning people didn't understand him and got judged without understanding him properly. He gets hurt by the way how people treat him like this, but at the same time, he believes he's right and it's the other people's loss if theymisunderstand him but it's too late because he's dead. He believes that people aren't doing anything about their lives and are too complacent to just wait a lifetime to end up dying in a hospital. It seems like he has things to tell people so they can learn from him but they never listened or learned so to those people this song still means nothing to them.

He sums up that these people are just a 'sad song'. This is song is really his way of getting back at those who hurt him- revenge in a subtle way, but it also makes you pity for him.

When he says "If I'm so wrong, how can you listen all night long," I think it's kind of like: Okay, so if I'm so messed up, why do the fans listen to me and my views all the time? It's kind of like a comeback to people who think he's messed up. That didn't come out anything like I hoped it would but whatever....
And he talks about how the beginning of life he wasn't all messed up, but he didn't like the end of his life at all. It's kind of like reflecting over everything and everyone in his life and kind of questioning it.
I think the song has multiple meanings, really.

I thought that it was kind of a duel meaning thing.
To follow the storyline of the album I think it's the patient reflecting on his life.
Saying maybe how all the other fuck ups he sees around him are pathetic seeing how he has no choice, he has to die. He feels as if he's spent a life time waiting for the hospital. Just looking back on his past, seeing all the things he's done, and how he should have/could have lived it differently. And saying to those "fuck-ups" well if I'm so wrong why are you listening? Your life never meant anything to you anyways. At least you have a choice of living.

Then the other half is Gerard's voice, how it's him reflecting on his life as well. Saying how. now he's in this huge band, and he's here to proove all the ass holes he's run into, especially in high school, wrong. And to some of his fans maybe, if I'm so wrong with what I'm writing/saying, how can you listen to this all night long? Or something along the lines of that.

Double A

I have a question: in the lyrics it says
Well if you think that I'm wrong this never meant nothing to you

Is the song saying if we think that they're wrong it meant something to us? Or is it saying it didn't mean anything? Cause the 'never' part contradicts 'nothing' by double negative (which equals positive) making it 'something'. Therefore if we think that they're wrong if meant something to us. Right?

Sorry I used logic terms on this but i didn't know how else to say it

^I think it means that if you don't understand what it's saying or you think it's wrong to just give up and stop thinking about it. I'm probably wrong, as I don't really know with the double negative part.

Everytime I think about this song,
I think about Gerard and Mikey.
For some reason.

Well if you have hear the origanaly disenchanted (shut up and Play) Wich it was at the time it was about Gerard being in threapy and being happy about it.

But this version i think is about his refletion on his life and he is commitaing it like a movie in the line "we watch our lives on the screen: Makes me think of just that a movie of the patiants life and how he is look at him self relsasing what he has done and each time he sees him self making that smae mistake over again he remarks saying "you never leard a god damn thing" . That is what i get out of it

So we're NOT sad songs? I mean...the album is not JUST about The Patient dying? O_O Wooaah...I'm getting kinda confused, now.

I think you're on to something

Gerard had said the ablum about not approaching things in a violent or angst why (like 3 cheers for example) and to overcome that and have self reflection and be able to accept yourself and overcome any obsticles you have.

So in that sense, the patient dying in the story and the thing he goes through in death are metaphor for anyone going through problems (The Sharpest Lives for example) and overcoming them in the end (Famous Last Words)

So with THAT said, in disenchanted could the song be saying after all thats happened how can there be any hope for the future? And by us thinking they're wrong we still have hope and we learned "something" from following the story.

Is that too much analysis or am I on to something as well?

Both are just rumors- neither are confimed nor denied. IMO, i doubt Gerard would waste on ounce of his talent, on a talentless hack like Bert McCracken.

Ouch. burn. Bert kinda deserves that (hence the vh1 interview when bert completely dissed Gerard and claimed he hated him)

But on a lighter note my friend had a hunch that Dis was a conclusion. That the patient had closure of his life and was ready to move on hence the reason for FLW. but I still agree with Double A about the whole methaphoric thing going on.

Maybe they are trying to teach us something. Very Happy

But what your friend said [above^] is very believable.
Yes

Even though, there really isn't "one true meaning" because Gerard said that people will interpret the album [and it's story/concept] differently.

I kinda agree....When i listen to it i think about someone who is older looking back on a relationship be it friendship, brothership, or love. it just reminds me of that. basically because of the "we watch our lives on the screen" and "as we ran from the cops we laughed so hard it would sting"

It just reminds me of it.
