I think they probably took the hurt that they were feeling at Elena's death, and put it into the song. But I also think that it's about the Demolition Lovers. A lot of MCR's songs have double meanings, and I believe this is one of them.

How does the song have much to do with Gerard's and Mikey's grandmother? I understand that she died, but very few of the lyrics sew into the death of a family member.

Umm i completely dissagree.. This song is about Gerard's Girlfriend.. who commited suicide and gerard became upset ( things are better if i stay)
(so long and good night,so long and good night) then it was covered up by saying it was about Gerard and MIkey's Grandmother. But in interviews,Gerard's Girlfriend has come up... (DUH!) ...!

It can be aliitle of both but their grandmother's name is Elena Rush.
It's about their grandma okay look:
Though the song in general is about the band members Gerard Way and Mikey Way's late grandmother, it was stated in an interview that the video told a different story. The music video shows the funeral of a young, beautiful, twenty-something year old girl named Helena, who, according to Gerard Way, died tragically. There is speculation that she could be the female of the "Demolition Lovers" that are chronicled in some of the band's songs, but evidence from the song leads most to believe that the video Helena died in a fatal car accident

Why would they write a song about a girlfriend, and then "cover it up" with a story about a grandmother? Is there anything to be gained from that? It doesn't add up to me. I agree with PassionBetweenLovers.

Even if it was written about Gee's and Mikey's grandma, it can hold meaning for anyone who has lost a loved one and had to accept it as they stayed behind in this life.
