Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. If you have a specific question, I can try and answer it. Also, gimp.org has some tutorials, and I don't know other places, but I'm sure they exist.
And generally, Photoshop tutorials work pretty well. |

I'm bad at explaining things but I'll try..
There should be a tool called "polygonal lasso tool", it's right under the square marquee tool(top left of the toolbar), use that tool to select the part you want to keep in color, and then copy and paste that as a new layer, go back to the first layer and press ctrl, shift, and U and will turn it black and white.
