Okay, so I don't know how the school systems and subjects work in any other state than S.A., but I do need some major advice.
I'm Year 11, so this week, we're selecting subjects for Year 12.
So far I've decided on Italian, Modern History, Legal Studies, Photography and now I'm trying to decide between English Communications and English Studies.
I'm planning to do journalism once I've left school, and I've spoken to a few English teachers at my school already, who've suggested Communications.
However, I'm really keen on Studies.
Has anyone done either of these subjects? And if you know anything about journalism, what would you suggest?

I would infinitely appreciate any help, it's really been doing my head in. >.<

Could you give me a bit of a rundown on what's involved in both of them?
I'm doing journalism at the moment, so I may be able to help.

Oh yep, of course.
This is basically what I've been told by the teachers:
English Communications
-Deals more with creative writing, advertising, commercial writing.
-Doesn't have an exam, but major assessment tasks
-Deals with a lot more editing and drafting, and also reviews

English Studies
-More analytical work, extracting texts etc.
-Looks at the more technical literature side, with authors and playwrights such as Jane Austen and Shakespeare
-Deals with poetry, text responses and does have an exam

Do you need to know more??

Well just looking at that, I'd say that English Communications would be the way to go.
It looks like it would be really useful for Journalism, or any career in Communications (lol, who would've guessed from the name)

That said, I don't think the other one would be bad either, it looks a lot like the things I had to do last year, but yeah when you consider what would be best if you want to go into the field of Journalism, I'd definately go for English Communications.

You're welcome.
Hah, I just read my last post here, and it was really ghey.
Anyway, I meant to say that Communications looks a lot like what I did this year in one of my subjects (Writing As Communication), so I guess that makes it more relevant?

I think that the whole assessment based thing makes it better too, because in the 'real world' you're not going to be placed in exam conditions for things, so I guess it's more realistic in a way.

^ Yeh, I would do communications as well, Studies sounds alot like the English Lit subject that I took last year, which just about killed me and dragged my enter score down a fair bit. I mean it might be something that you are really good at, but it's a massive workload. Besides which...no exam = super awesome.

Yeah, I mean, there's no point in choosing a subject that I know will stress me out, if I can pick something equally as useful, if not more.
The whole 'no exam' thing really appeals to me too. XD

Hmm. well, i did Studies in year 11, and then did Comms in year 12. I definitely preferred Comms, and one of my subjects this year was fairly similar to it as well.

Comms suited my learning style better i guess, and it was more creative etc. i mean yes, you still have to analyse a bunch of texts, but not in as much detail [i felt] as the Studies girls had to.

so i say go Comms =)
also; yay photography! (i can't believe it counts as a Maths/Science subject!) (aha, looking at your subjects, it's your maths/ science one, isn't it? it was mine too xD)

My school doesn't have the choice of Communications or Studies in year 11, which is really bad, for people like me who have no idea of either.
But yeah, I think I will do Communications.
I think it'll suit me just as well as Studies would, but with more advantages in terms of journalism.

Hahaha, yup, it's my group 2 subject.
It's the first year my school has had photography as a year twelve subject!!
Otherwise I would've done biology. XD
