I actually wrote a 500 word paper (well, it turned out to be 950) about a MCR concert for a friends class! I wrote the ENTIRE paper. And enjoyed every minute of it....color me obsessed! I thought I'd post it for your viewing pleasure!! anyone else do things like this??
On October 8, a group of friends and I traveled to The Arena at Gwinnett to see the violent pop sensation, My Chemical Romance. The band has released
many songs that I enjoyed immensely from their album Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, so I anticipated that this was an event that I would enjoy immensely as well. The concert took place on a Saturday, of which the effect was a rather diverse and sizable audience of approxiamately 6,000. The ages of the audience varied greatly but was predominately comprised of 13-18 year olds. Here and there was a rather bored looking parent chaperoning their young teen or a young child having been brought along by their young parent.
Once we were seated in row U of section 101 in the arena's concourse, I took in the concert setting. The stage was set with the drums on an elevated platform and three mikes set downstage. Two giant arches reminiscent of stained glass windows housing video screens framed a banner sized re-creation of the band's logo. As the lights went down announcing the bands much anticipated entrance to the stage, the roar of the crowd grew steadily in volume. Led by frontman Gerard Way, dressed in his usual black ensemble which included a bulletproof vest, My Chemical Romance took the stage with such a presence that demanded the attention of the crowd from the first moments and didn't let go for the entirety of the 19 song set. The bands two guitarists, Frank Iero and Ray Toro contrasted and complimented each other both musically and aesthetically, Frank with his controversial attitude displayed in his body art and on his guitars which read things such as "Pansy" and "Kill" and Ray with a moThe first song of the set, entitled "Thank You for the Venom," opened the concert and set the mood for the entire event. The lead singer ended the song by announcing his band to thousands of screaming fans who. Gerard Way almost immediately created a rapport with the audience by asking them questions loudly and in general "pumping them up." Before the band performed the hit single "Helena," the lyrics of which represented an open letter from Gerard to himself and commemorated the death of his beloved grandmother, Helena Rush, who had passed away in recent years prior. As the opening bars of the well known tune were played, Gerard had the entire audience to look toward the ceiling while shouting: "Hi Grandma!"
Another memorable song was the popular taboo single "You Know What they do to Guys Like Us in Prison," which lyrically describes prison rape. This song exemplifies the band's disregard to the "comfort zone" in music today, which is probably why they are rarely played on mainstream radio stations. This is obviously a favorite of the band, in that the already high energy levels of the band members skyrocketed even more. During this song, guitarist Frank Iero along with Gerard Way rocketed around the stage, jumped frantically and encouraged the audience to do the same on the condition that if "anyone falls or gets knocked down, you pick them back up!" Other notable songs included the band's original song "Skylines and Turnstiles," which reflected Gerard Way's reaction to the events of September 11th, "To The End," which is a reflection of the Faulkner classic short story "A Rose for Emily," and "Cemetary Drive," which spins a torrid tale of an adulterous relationship gone wrong. After 18 songs, the band left the stage whilst the audience roared for an encore. Not surprisingly, the band soon reappeared and launched into the popular anthem "I'm not Okay( I Promise)," which also happens to be my personal favorite. It was written about a bad highschool experience that is very easily related to by students and former students. The crowd was absolutely wild at this point, and virtually every member of the audience was singing along with every word, myself included. After an explosive conclusion of fret slides, maniacal jumps, cymbal crashes, and confetti, the arena fell into complete darkness and the two arches read "The End." The crowd exploded in a deafening roar of applause and cheers.
Due to the nature of this concert, no programs were available amid the slew of merchandise. No guide was needed for this event since it was a concert and was basically self-explanitory.
The event was a major success. I enjoyed the music, as well as the stage presence of the band. Althought I wish this concert could have been located somewhere a little more conveint to this area since it was a two hour drive there and back in the wee hours of the morning. Other than that, the concert was awesome. Overall, I absolutely loved it. My friends with whom I traveled enjoyed both the time spent getting there and back, and the concert itself. To summarize in the words of one of my dear friends: "It completely Rocked!"
He'd better have gotten an "A!" I'll let you know! |

Speaking of MCR-related school assignments today we had to say who we think should be honored by having their face put on a postage stamp and guess who i did? Gerard! Sorry for the run-on and spam.
Haha "Guess who I did? Gerard!" |
