Okay, as we all know, MCR fans, and even the band themselves have been labelled a lot by the public.

Why do you think this is?
What is a stereotype MCR fan?
Is the stereotype true?
Who labels MCR and fans?

include any other points or discussion that you want!

Stereotypes are ideas about members of other particular groups, based primarily on membership in that group. They may be positive or negative prejudicial, and may be used to justify certain discriminatory behaviors. Some people consider all stereotypes to be negative. Stereotypes are rarely completely accurate, based on some kernel of truth, or completely fabricated.

well thats what wikipedia says...

i think that ALOT of people stereotype mcr fans (and the band) as being "emo". which is crap. Disgust but i think some people think that mcr fans are becoming more like teenies. and although there may be some teenies out there, i dont think they make up the majority of mcr fans. i have no idea why people stereotype at all. its dumb. and no it’s not true. I think ignorant people label and stereotype mcr fans. people who don’t know shit.

Because My Chemical Romance have that... look that people call "emo". I guess black, tight pants and lyrics like "I'm not okay" make them think that.

But that's because people never give anything a chance, and never listen to it fully and only take the first impression they get from something and run with it.

Well I do know for sure that I won't fit in MCR stereotype. I actually feel that no one takes me seriously when I tell them MCR's my favorite (must have something to do with the thing that I also like popsingers, but still why not?)
Mean I'm this energic, positive girl who smiles a lot. I don't wear much black, I don't swear or stuff like that. Then my friend calls me "wannabe-emo-boy"! Yeah it's a joke but a bit annoying though. My point exactly is that why can't we all just listen the kinda music we like the best without having the expected look or other favorites?

I agree. I am nothing like a typical 'emo'. MCR is my favourite band yes that is true. But my favourite colour is pink and most of my wardrobe is in fact pink. I am 21 and have just left Uni, which officially makes me old now, *sob*. I love cats, they are so cute *grin*. I am a trained counsellor. I love kids. I love to read alot alot alot, major Harry Potter fan. Okay this is a brief insight into my life, Lol. Now my music taste includes...
MCR, Evanescence, Foo Fighters, Green Day, System of A Down, Distubed, Rage Against The Machine, Korn, James Blunt, Keane, Nirvana, Jimmy Eat World, Take That, The Supremes, Four Tops, Ben E King, Percy Sledge. And many more because usually I only like a couple of songs, MCR is the exception to that rule, I love all their songs.

So I have no idea what a stereotypical fan would be, because I never seem to fit any stereotype, Lol.

I also would not fit into the "stereotypical fan" thing.... luckily here in South Africa we don't bother with the MCR stereotype that I have noticed yet but I was labelled scary rock chic for most of my life and that is hysterical because those same labellers would lose it when they would spot me out at the club dancing to pop music. Mass confusion ensued.... but I definitely would not call myself "emo" at all... not really sure what that means exactly anyway! Dance

Why do people stereotype... I think it makes them feel safe and superior because the unknown and/or new is scary. If you label it something then you can group it, file it and understand it, even if the label is waaaaayyyyyy wrong. Disgust

I dont understand why the are labelled Emo. I get labelled at school as Emo because I listen to them, mostly by Chavs, there all like ''Omgz, do you cut yourself?'' I hate Chavs...No offence if anyone here likes Chavs.

okay im going to make this as clear as possible
Sterotyping is the reason why schools and the outside world becomes scary. Why? because people judge you on your looks and lable you as what you look like which isnt right
Sterotyping MCR is an issue with mcr fans because we all know our guys are not what "they" say are.
let me define emo; Emo:Emotionaly unstable,Heavily Depressed, and causes cutting.
Is this a fact? to some yeah cause like i said the outside world says things that arent true and causes your mentality of the band to differ.
These guys have strived through so much that when you think about it, not anyone here would wanna be like "i wanna go through what they went through". cause its not fun. These are the guys who grew up being bullied went through almost every highschool pain you can ask for.
Yet they growed up taking all that pain they had and resting it in peace. And telling our world our society that we shouldnt do the things they did, that if we do we are going to face more pain more suffering.
This is not called emo this is called Teaching
This band is saving so many teens world wide. Most of there concerts teaches you something
But we cant do anything about sterotyping as wrong as it may be we really cant do anything but ignore and move on.
mcr arent emo and have said that there not.
media says they send selfharming messages when they have no proof on gerard or any of the band members saying "we want kids to cut cause its cool". this shows how much one knows with no proof

It gets really stupid, where even some of my friends, who i know have never heard an MCR song, let alone be able to recognise them, are calling them emos and 'that scary band'. How can they say this without listening to them? it makes me angry cause its really quite narrow minded, only things in the charts are 'acceptable' but i guess its just the world.
To someone who isnt familiar with MCR, i guess their fans are stereotypically pale, black hair, black clothes, piercings, depressed and other 'emo' qualities

I think that people labeling MCR is ridiculous. People have actually come up to me before and ask if I cut my wrists like "that one guy from My Chemical Romance". And during my sort of cutting withdrawal, Mom wouldn't let me listen to them.

It's a pity what labels do. I think people apply them so they feel that they belong somewhere. When you're a teenager, you want to fit into a group, and soon, the groups get names. And then people start making fun of groups that they think are 'beneath them'. The same goes for bands. And singers like Britney Spears. How can you know what a slut she is, or how 'suicidal' MCR are, if you've never even met them?

Honestly, the world is turning into some kind of high school holocaust.

Yep.

It's just pathetic how people go and label about everything they can see. I personally hate all genres 'cause in my opinion you can't just by looks or sound tell what things are or aren't. There are many shapes of everything and things are never only black or white.

I seriously can't stand stereotyping. Just because MCR has been labeled 'emo' some people won't even listen to them. Just because they've been labeled 'emo' doesn't mean that they are, and it also doesn't mean that they're music is bad. People can't see past their obsession with they're own image and how they appear to others to even consider doing something that has been deemed "un-cool" due to stereotyping.
Who labels MCR and fans? insecure people and the media. Insecure people are always the ones who do stereotyping, because people who are comfortable with themselves don't feel afraid to get to know strangers who seem different than them. The media has often depicted MCR as 'emo', probably because of MCR's darker image. I just wish people would listen to the music and maybe get to know something about MCR before they make assumptions.

There are people who think they have to look a certain way because they are MCR fans.

They like wearing black and eyeliner. They usually won't say they're emo, but it's still there. The style. That they're now following.

It pisses me off because they're making the stereotype worse. Don't dare tell me I'm wrong.

Everyone calls me emo cos I like MCR. It's a stereotype, huh. Yep, I'm emotional. I've been crying all concert long, for those 3 hours. It still doesn't mean I'm emo or mcr's emo. It's ridiculous.
Well, when that emo thing became a trend, lots of bands were labelled. I mean FOB for example. Emo was popular and media called everyone emo cos there was much demand for it. They didn't care about those who would later be beaten by emohaters because of some mcr badges. They needed money.
And now everyone calls them emo and hates them for it. Haters even don't know a thing about MCR music!( Tis stupid.
