UndyingSoul. Really Not Okay Age: 34 Gender: Female Posts: 722 | What are your thoughts on SIDS? What do you think causes SIDS? How do you think it can be prevented? Any other thoughts on the subject? Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is a syndrome marked by the symptoms of sudden and unexplained death of an apparently healthy infant aged one month to one year. the sharpest lives. Shotgun Sinner Age: 30 Gender: Female Posts: 8710 | What are your thoughts on SIDS? I think its terrible. I think no parent should have to go through something like the death of their young child. What do you think causes SIDS? I don't really know. I might be genetic but it might not be. How do you think it can be prevented? Yet again, I don't know. People need to find out more about the disease first, I think. Any other thoughts on the subject? I just think its really sad. I'm sorry about your friend, NotOkay22. I would be so distraught if I lost my child to SIDS. |
Carrie White Thinking Happy Thoughts Age: 31 Gender: Female Posts: 416 | that's terrible, I'm sorry about your friend. its very sad, it has to hurt so bad to have your child die. i agree with Reject, i think it might be genetic somehow. either that or their body is just very fragile and couldn't make it. i have no idea how it can be prevented. i don't even think it can be at all its very terrible. and you never know about your own child. this disease is very scary. and Ashleigh ANOREXIC., that was ignorant, stupid, rude, pathetic, and misanthropic. |
Pilgrim. Salute You in Your Grave Age: - Gender: Female Posts: 2159 | It's a horrible thing. Nothing is worse than losing your child, and it's just worse to know that there is no real reason for it. Though it's been researched a lot, I don't think they've found an explanation of any kind for it. Some believe it's genetical, it might be caused by a brain disorder or even the sex of the baby. Apparently there are matters that can increase the risk, such as smoking or using heroin while pregnant or incorrect sleep positioning among others. I think the best way to reduce the risk is to take really good care of your baby during the pregnancy and after the birth. Though apparently there is no way to really prevent it, as the actual cause is not known. I'm really sorry for your friend and I hope that they get help to get over their tragic loss. |
sweet disposition. Banned Age: 30 Gender: Female Posts: 48272 | Ashleigh ANOREXIC.: What an ignorant view on the subject. And also unsensitive. Up until now, I'd never heard of SIDs. Is it like cot death? |

Legion Salute You in Your Grave Age: 34 Gender: Male Posts: 2679 | ways to prevent. better education on methords(or said methords) to prevent SIDS. Thats the only way i can see. |
the sharpest lives. Shotgun Sinner Age: 30 Gender: Female Posts: 8710 | Yeah, I never headr much about it until this topic. Thanx for making me aware with it, it sounds like such an awful and sad thing. |
UndyingSoul. Really Not Okay Age: 34 Gender: Female Posts: 722 | Ashleigh ANOREXIC: There are a lot of things I wish to say to your right now, but they will get me in tons of trouble. Everyone else, thank you for your sensitivity. My friend is devastated, and I am as well. It was so sudden. When my friend put her baby son to bed he was fine, and the next morning she woke up to find him...well...you know... It was terrible. I wish with all my heart that a cure will be found. But we cant even be close to a cure when we dont even know the cause... |

CyanideRomantic Killjoy Age: 33 Gender: Female Posts: 37 | Yeah I know people who that have happened to....I think one of the worst things about it was the fact that the police had to question the parents to determine wether it was a homicide, child abuse..etc. Its a really scary thing because there are no sighns and there is no idea what it really is, makes everyone scared about putting there kids to bed and it really is , in a nutshell, a common fear in society. There are a few theories, one of them including a theory that its something like an AIDs for infants or ranging all the way to its just a virus that we havent been able to detect yet. Im very sorry for anyone who has ever had to go thru the experience, whether it was a friend or not.-Val |
Pilgrim. Salute You in Your Grave Age: - Gender: Female Posts: 2159 | Atchoo.: Plenty of theories. They're doing a lot of research on the subject, but nothing bulletproof has been found do far. It has remained a mystery for so long, I doubt that a breakthrough in the researches will be coming anytime soon. If you want to any learn more of the research, go to sids.org. |
UndyingSoul. Really Not Okay Age: 34 Gender: Female Posts: 722 | EndlessSacrifice: Yes. Multiple studies are being held all over the place, and their are plenty of theories, but no real progress has been made. They still don't no the the cause, which means they still don't have an ways to prevent it. Doctors are always coming out with things that they think may help prevent it, but nothing has been proven to work. I was talking to my mom and she said that when my little sister was a baby that first doctors said that you should lay your babies to bed on their back to prevent it. Then months later they were to lay them on their bellies to prevent it. Then later it was that they were to be laid on their side to prevent it. It keeps changing, and the theories are being pumped out, but nothing has been proven. Its horrible. |
Hooley Fabulous Killjoy Age: 37 Gender: Female Posts: 112 | sorry for bumping this. I'm so sorry to hear about your friend. It happened to my friend last year when her lovely daughter was 4 weeks old. I think the hardest thing to deal with when it comes to SIDS is that there is rarely an explanation for it. You'll never know why the baby dies, nothing to blame for it. It's so sad to see people you care about going through it. My friend is pregnant again and is having extra scans with this one. Apparently, there is something at the back of a baby's neck that could indicate if there is a higher risk of that babys suffering SIDS, so they're keeping an eye on it. It's not concrete evidence, but enough to make the doctors look out for it. As for preventing it, you rarely can. Although you can buy monitors and things that set off an alarm if baby's heart rate slows or stops, giving chance to perform first aid, but that's it really. And placing baby in the cot in the correct manner. |
Littlemisschem Fabulous Killjoy Age: 31 Gender: Female Posts: 129 | SIDS is such an awful thing to happen, especially to parents who were so happy with their newborn baby. Something must've happened early in the pregnancy or something that wasn't detectable when the baby was born, or something like that, I'm not a doctor. It's pretty unexplained and unexplainable. You can't really stop something that you don't know much about. My condolences (?) go out to all the parents who had to suffer through this. |
girl interrupted. Salute You in Your Grave Age: 29 Gender: Female Posts: 2792 | A friend of mine's son died of this. Well, actually, two different friends. It's really awful. I think it's one of the worst things that can happen to a parent. Especially when the police have to check if it was child abuse or a murder or something. I'm not a doctor, so I really can't say what I think is the cause or the prevention, but I suppose you should get a monitor to check the baby's heart rate and things. It's really sad. |
