My Chemical Romance have agreed to pay Maine University $20,500 over a cancelled concert late last month, avoiding the legal proceedings threatened.
The University’s Student Government had threatened to sue the rock outfit over lost promotional costs, fees to contractors and compensation costs from the axed show on October 27.
This led to a furious backlash from many MCR fans, who claimed the University were taking matters too far and that the band has a genuine reason for missing the show.
Speaking to The Maine Campus magazine, Derek Mitchell, the vice president of student entertainment, said of the agreed compensation: "It sort of came as a surprise that they agreed to do it, but at the same time we're really pleased that they understood the situation and were so quick to agree.
"We are very happy we didn't have to proceed further."
The band’s drummer Bob Bryar suffered a hand injury before the gig, forcing the cancellation. However, at a concert the day after, the band drafted in a replacement – angering Maine University.
Despite his initial refusal to host a rearranged My Chemical Romance show, Mitchell said that he is now open to discussion about the outfit performing again. The university is also going to revise its contracts with bands performing.

I feel bad for the kids who were looking forward to it. I doubt they will. The university refuses to let them. They tried to make it up. |

Age: 37 Gender: Female Posts: 2903 | November 11th, 2007 at 03:39am I don't like that the band paid up. IMO they were in the right, they offered to re schedule, I can understand the fans being dissapointed but i'm sure they would rather that than their money back, I know I would! Bob had a good reason to not be able to play.... Poor Bob. Anyway, they shouldn't have paid because they were right. But I suppose you're right $20,500 is pretty much nothing to them now. It still irks me, it was like admitting that they were being choosy about missing the show....

Yes, they cancelled the show and yes, the next night they played with a replacement. But that replacement needed a day to learn Bob's part. They can't just get a replacement in one day. It's not their fault. Maine was just being pissy. |

That was just so wrong. I don't think MCR should've paid either. But then that ends it all. I think MCR also just wanted to end the issue.

as mirarle said, both sides had faults and i understand that your primary concern is for mcr but try putting yourself in the university's shoes. see how YOU would feel about it. |

If My Chemical Romance cancles a show it's for a good reason.
They allways try to play.
Maine should have let them play another show at a diff time like MCR suggested. |

On the other hand, I feel bad for all the fans who were looking forward to the show and didn't get to see them.
University of Maine was still a little bitchy.
But anyway, I'm glad MCR paid and now we don't have to deal with Derek Mitchell again. |

Age: 35 Gender: Female Posts: 4520 | November 12th, 2007 at 01:18am I understand that the university got pissed off that they played a show after they had cancel theirs, but the way the university handled was a bit unreasonal tbh. They should've at least talked to the band's management or something before automatically considering of taking legal action against the band. I'm just glad that mcr were able to be reasonable and just paid up the money instead of having to go into court for all of it. I feel bad the everyone that was going to the show wasn't able to see it. But that derek guy now wants to reconsider of having them reschedule the concert now that mcr paid up. He should've just took the offer in the first place. I doubt my chem would actually want to agree after it was turned down at the beginning. |

Yes, MCR had a genuine reason for not playing, but the Uni also lost alot of money that had gone towards setting up ect. |

Age: 37 Gender: Female Posts: 112 | November 12th, 2007 at 04:33pm Surely it woould have cost more than that in legal fees though? Maybe paying an o-o-c settlement was the cheaper, more sensible option for all?
the line "Despite his initial refusal to host a rearranged My Chemical Romance show, Mitchell said that he is now open to discussion about the outfit performing again." made me laugh.
Part of me hopes they tell him to sod off, but the other part of me thinks they should play for the fans that missed out. the very understanding fans, may i add. |
