Yes, I do. It sounds really cheesy to have a column in a newspaper giving advice to people, but I really think it could give people ideas.

I think that you could talk to other people that are close to you. Family members, close friends, anyone who you are emotionally connected with. Since they actually know you, they could probably help you better in the long run with advice that you need.

I think, in some senses, they can help and give people ideas of what to do when they are in situations they can't get out of. However, the advice columns don't personally know the indivual or the full extent of their problem, this means they don't know how that person will deal whatever their advice is suggesting. They also don't know how much is true, how much is exaggeration or if the problem is much worse than the person cares to let on.

In my eyes, I think Whitneyy is right. Your best option would be to discuss things with family or close friends who know the problem well or you know you can trust to tell the full problem to. Also, they can help support you as you take their advice into actions where a advice column couldn't.

I guess it would depend on the question being asked.
The person who is giving the advice in these columns is obviusly not equipped to handle every single problem under the sun, so the advice given may not also be the right advice.
Secondly the entirety of someones problem can not possible be written in one letter, to the extent that the receiver could have enough information about the person and there problem to give them the answer, it takes a lot of communication by all parties involved.
Thirdly a newspaper, including the advice column is like all media, it is a business, so it isn't going to put things in there which could result in negative sales, this severly restricts what will be put in articles such as an advice column, it is about what sells.
