Before you go straight to deleting this topic, please read through it, i know it has been posted a THOUSAND times but keep reading.

I'm doing a project for college trying to prove that bands like MCR and other bands that are associated with this so called "emo" label don't promote depression and self harm.

So, please tell me, what have they done for you? How have they changed you?

mcr has made me realise that its ok to be me, not matter who 'me' is. they have made me realise i shouldnt care what people think, and should be happy with the way i am =]
also, they given me 3 awesome albums to listen to, and of course, 5 cuties to perve on in my room. lol.
but yeah, and they helped me through so many times, just from listening to songs and realising that im not alone.

They made me a better person, and not some preppy whore who does evil stuff to others. They inspired me, taught me a lot of things and gave me great music with their lyrics and metaphors. They also taught me that it isn't important to look cool and be with the crowd of society, they gave me individuality from others and confidence to go out in the world.

They have changed my outlook on life.
Because of them, I'm not afraid of death anymore.
And they taught me how to express myself, and be myself.
I mean, Green Day did, but, MCR actually pushed me along my way to my attitude currently: take no one's shit. And be myself.
They have also taught me that there are five guys just as fucked up as I am.
And they are not depressed.
They are happy as hell and three of them [almost, Frank is ALMOST] are happily married. Very Happy
They also saved my life.
They weren't the ONLY thing that saved my life,
but they helped a whole hell of a lot.

It's funny because MCR, contrary to promoting self-harm, actually speaks out against it. And not only that, they speak out for the misfits, the marginalised, the angry and lonely who might kill themselves if not for the band whose music resonates with them, and assures them they're not alone.

Of course, people who stereotype emo bands seldom bother to take a closer look at the lyrics. all they hear is screaming and angry guitar riffs and Gerry making suicidal faces at the camera. ah well, there will always be shallow people - but what's sad is that so many of them are in authority to ban or shut out the things they don't understand.

it is when we deny our misery and pretend to be happy that we become all the more miserable.

put THaT in your report dear. Smile

What MCR did for me?

They changed my life
They helped me stand up for my self
They helped me realize that I can be me, I dont have to change
Even if they havent saved MY life, if I hadnt discovered them, I would be an emotional wreck on the verge on suicide. I also know that they have saved others lives
They reconnected me with my friends
And they broadened my musical and clothing tastes lol

They made me feel like I wasn't alone.
That I wasn't a reject.
And I found all these new friends through them.

They didn't save my life, but they sure made it a damn better place to live. :]

MCR does not think emo is pile of shit. I remember them being very cool about it, and that frankly people can call them anything - the music itself is more important, not the label.

I have never in my life been ashamed to call myself emo. the term has gotten a bad rep from being associated with suicide and deathwishes and general depressive fits. While it's true that many depressed people are emo, the vice-versa is not true.

Emo can (IMHO) be interpreted as a way of thinking. A way of looking at things, of reacting. Sometimes it's a statement; sometimes it's just a way of dressing; but i'll have u know that many 'emo' people carry on with life like anyone else - they work and study and play; they don't all hide in corners crying and being angry 24/7. that may just be how we react when we're troubled - it doesn't define us, the way we live life day to day.

I understand if u're mad bcoz u were labelled & stereotyped from young, or smthg. Try to let go of the grudge, though. MCR understands the frustration of labelling bcoz they too went thru it. that's why they sing about it. And i'm glad that they saved ur life - they saved mine too.

I'm still emo though. but i wear it like a scar, a badge of pride. i'm not ashamed to cry and rage and recover. I am not afraid to keep on living.

where do i start?
firstly, i feel that MCR are a big 'fuck you' to all the people that have put me down in the past. they also taught me to be happy with who i am and that it is okay to be an outcast.

MCR made me understand that killing yourself won't make everything better and that while good things are going by, you won't be there to see it so you have to live your life to the fullest, and not miss anything.

They made me finally realize my talents in writing, and now I've become such a better person, focusing more in school so that I can persue my dreams.

They've done much more for me but thta's just too much to list.

MCR have made me think more about peoples rights for instance Gerard always says ''if a guy says show then your tits...tell them to fuck off''............. i think this is a great example it shows respect and also the big thing with '' Homophobia is gay''' there are so many different sayings the band use to promote different rights and he manages to get 99% off the ans to listen and take heed of what is being said !!!
Good luck with your essay thing
