WHO: Panic at the Disco
WHAT: "Nine in the Afternoon" [Director: Shane Drake]
WHY: With their last album, Panic at the Disco became a love/hate sensation — everyone under the age of 16 couldn't get enough of their wordy theatrics while everyone else couldn't stand them for more than thirty seconds. Based on new single "Nine in the Afternoon," though, they're aiming for a middle ground — singer Brendon Urie is actually singing instead of whining and the music sounds like the Beatles instead of the sonic equivalent of emo vomit. And this video seems spiritually related to the Cirque du Soleil/Beatles mashup shown at the Grammys last night (like Cirque's Beatles show Love, PATD are from Las Vegas). It's infatuated with its own extravagance. But the PATD video is superior because A) it doesn't ruin a Beatles song, B) it doesn't even attempt to make sense and C) it involves the guys wearing animal heads while playing in a heavenly candyland. The video is utter nonsense — a world of pure imagination that's easy to watch and hard to loathe.
