Lyn Z Interview:

What Were You Like As A Teenager?
"I grew up in a small rural rown in connecticut, and I didn't stand out at all. i was the nerdy girl in the corner and i was the total fat kid! I was huge and i was painfully shy. Shit, to this day, i wish i could talk to my English teacher, and tell her 'Can you believe I am doing this now?' because when i had to read out loud in her class it was a nightmare!

What Would The Young Lindsey Think Of Lyn-Z?
"I think my younger self would have been really excited to know that i am now living out every single dream that i have ever had. Most people don't aspire to something huge. But I did have those dreams, I wanted to escape."

How Did You Begin To Realise Those Dreams?
"I wanted to be an artist mainly, so I ran away to the Pratt Institue art school in Brooklyn, New York. They saw my portfolio and accepted me on the spot. My art back then was similar to now - really dark, autobiographical and funny illustrations and then oil paintings."

Did You Ever Put On An Art Show?
"My first art show was at a gallery in Manhattan in the basement of a burnt-out building and my artwork was taped onto the wall - it was very punk rock! i still do art now. We [with husband Way] have a studio in our house and it's really cool because we actually get to work together. It's really fun and we actually inspire each other alot. what we do - in terms of our art and our music - is totally different but we both really apriciate where the other person is coming from. That's our favourite thing to do - sit in our studio and draw together."

How Did You End Up Swapping Art For Music?
"I fell into the music completely ass backwards! I met Mindless at that first art show, and at the time, i could barely play bass. It was so hilarious, though, and such a funny experience, that i couldn't turn it down. It was a real adventure. So I went to the audition, and i was so, so nervous. So terrified! We had a few tries at the songs, then we had one last shot at Tornado - which we still play - and i knew it was my last chance. I had put a film canister filled with Bacardi 151 in my bra, and i had matchsticks in my pigtails and a strike pad glued to the back of my bass. So, I took the shot, pulled the matches out of my hair, struck the back of my bass and blew fire all over the room - almost setting Jimmy [Urine, singer] on fire! They were like 'Okay, you're hired!'."

Musicians Become Role Models By Default. How Do You Feel About Being One?
"When I was in that shitty town, I was going to shows and watching boys have all the fun, and i never had anyone to look up to. Somewhere, somehow, i created my own world, and became what i wanted to see. There seems to be so much pressure [on girls] to be so perfect and look so perfect all the time but for me it's like, 'No!'. You have to create things that you can talk about. It's not about being good, or being amazing, it's about standing out, being different and trying."

What Do You Find Most Difficult About Being In MSI?
"Well, people wouldn't expect it to see me, but I actually have crippling stage fright. An hour before the show, I can't even talk to anybody. It's brutal - I don't know how to overcome it, and it never ever gets better. I worry about not delivering which doesn't make sence because there's nothing that i could really do to fail. Fall over? I fall over all the time. Fall off stage? I have fallen off the stage too. Fuck up my bass line? Yeah, almost every other song! But I am terrified to go out there in front of people and be a spectacle."

That Must Make Photo Shoots And Interviews Hard, Then?
"It makes me uncomfortable. I am the bass player. I never wanted to be the frontperson. It's okay with me to be at the side because I am part of the party, but I don't want to be the hostess."

How Do You Feel About The Attention You're Receiving As A Result Of Your Marriage?
"It's Infuriating! One of the biggest reasons that i do what i do, is for other women and for other girls, then suddenly, when i got married, that was taken away from me. I'm suddenly 'wife of blah blah blah'."

You Must Have Expected It, Though?
"It's shocking that it still exists! I think it sends such a bad message to girls because it wipes out all the hard work that I did. He [Way] doesn't want that for me either. The questions are never-ending and it's disgusting."

What's The Big Deal About It?
"It's fucked up and totally offensive that my name has totally disappeared and I am now referred to as 'Mrs Gerard Way'. It's fucked up that little kides want to come to MY show to see Gerard standing at the side of the stage. And I don't want to have anything to do with it. But I Get alot of positive reactions , too - people saying that I have inspired them and that feels good. If that stuff wasn't in place, then I'd probably throw it all away."

So Why Do You Do What You Do?
"Every night I sweat, I hurt myself and I don't stop until the job is done because I want every little girl in the audience to walk away thinking that it's possible - that they can do this."
