Girl, 13, hangs herself after becoming obsessed with Emo 'suicide cult' rock band
Last updated at 13:37pm on 08.05.08

A girl of 13 killed herself after becoming obsessed with a fashion which links death with glamour, an inquest heard.

Hannah Bond hanged herself from her bunk bed with a tie after becoming an 'Emo'.

Emo fans wear dark clothes, practise self-harm and listen to "suicide cult" rock bands.

'Everything to live for': school student Hannah Bond hanged herself not long after showing her father the cuts on her wrists as part of her 'emo initiation'

Two weeks before her death, she started following U.S. band My Chemical Romance.

One of their songs contains the lyrics: "Although you're dead and gone, believe me your memory will go on."

Hannah, described as a model pupil, had started cutting her wrists but told her father it was part of an initiation into the Emo fashion.

Heartbroken: Ray and Heather Bond told the court their daughter had told them emo was 'just a fashion'

Coroner Roger Sykes said yesterday that Hannah's death was "not glamorous, just simply a tragic loss of a young life".

Hannah's mother Heather told the inquest she had researched the trend since her daughter's death.

"There are websites that show pink teddies hanging themselves," she said.

"She called Emo a fashion and I thought it was normal."

She added: "Hannah was a normal girl. She had loads of friends. She could be a bit moody but I thought it was just because she was a teenager."

Hannah's father Ray, a karate teacher, said: "Two weeks before, I saw the cuts. I asked her about them and she said it was an Emo initiation.

"She promised me she would never do it again."

Hannah gave her name as Living Disaster on her page on social networking website Bebo.

The page is decorated with a picture of an Emo girl with bloody wrists after slashing herself.

Another picture shows a child's exercise book scrawled with the words: "Dear Diary, today I give up. . ."

The inquest in Maidstone, Kent, heard Hannah had been with her boyfriend at a friend's house on the evening of September 22 last year.

She had been angry when she was told she was not allowed to sleep over and when she got home in East Peckham she went straight to her room, saying: "I want to kill myself."

The inquest was told Hannah had not used drugs or alcohol before her death but Vanessa Everett, her head teacher at Mascalls School, said self-harm had become commonplace among other Emo fans.

Recording a verdict of suicide, Mr Sykes said: "The Emo overtones concerning death and associating it with glamour I find very disturbing."

•The Emo phenomenon began in the U.S. in the 1980s. It is a largely teenage trend and is characterised by depression, self-injury and suicide.

Followers wear tight jeans with studded belts and wristbands. Their hair is dyed black and worn in long fringes to obscure their faces.

Emo - from the word emotional - is a reference to the angst-filled lyrics and melancholy themes of the rock music central to the culture.

One of the foremost of these "suicide cult" bands is My Chemical Romance, from New Jersey.

Their first single, Welcome to the Black Parade, from the album The Black Parade, was released in 2006 and became a huge hit, going to number one in Britain.

The concept album follows the story of a character called The Patient, who dies of cancer.

The Black Parade is a nickname for the place where Emo fans believe they will go when they die.

This whole story is fucking ridiculous.
I mean, yes I do feel for the girl, her friends & family but I find it utterly fucked up that they pretty much blame My Chemical Romance.... They are not a suicide cult for heavens sake, they save lives not destroy them!
I'm beyond pissed off.
they just don't get it do they?

Instead of blaming a band and some ridiculous culture, blame psychological factors. Clearly she wasn't in the right mind.

She was 13, for fucks sake.
You don't make decisions like that based on an informed idea at 13.
You barely make a decision like that based on an informed idea at any age.

Correction.
'Emo fans' wear dark clothes and listen to rock bands.
Depressed people practice self-harm.
Stop trivializing pain.

I have to give them credit though.
That did actually make me laugh.

i just saw this on NME and thought there would be a thread for it
i think its ridiculous, whoever wrote that article knew nothing of what their talking about. And as for the girl, shes either stupid for taking her own life over nothing or has a proper deep reason

bits on NME.com say:

The inquest heard that Bond had discussed with friends the "glamour" of suicide, and was obsessed with American band My Chemical Romance (pictured). She had a picture of an emo girl with bloody wrists on her Bebo page.

Bond's father Ray explained that his daughter had had an episode of self-harm prior to her suicide, which she told him was an emo initiation ceremony.

if he knows about her daughter's self harm episode before that then why didnt he do something about it? Talk to her. Or get her a therapist like any normal parents would. Evil or Very Mad

i've said this in Rumours thread but im saying this again- behind every 'emo' kids who harm themselves, there are parents blaming MCR. Disgust

It's ridiculous! MCR aren't even emo and how can listening to a band- that has saved lives- motivate you to kill yourself? Another example of sensationalist journalism.

So apparently I'm part of a "suicide death cult"? LOL

The Black Parade is a nickname for the place where Emo fans believe they will go when they die.

this made everyone at school laugh so hard today, even people who don't like MCR. It's as though they didn’t know how to finish the article and the author had to ask his 6 year old son to come up with a sentence!

This "journalism" should not be allowed - I cannot believe people are actually getting paid for shit like this when they quite clearly haven't done any research and have managed to produce a completely one-sided argument.

The Times (my newspaper!) managed to write a fair and decent article on this. Instead of the word "cult", emo was called "subculture", and there was NO mention of MCR. This is how it should have been done.

Ultimately, it was inevitable that this was going to happen. Music has always been used as a scapegoat: Marilyn Manson for the Columbine shootings, Guns & Roses for Virginia Tech. It’s unfair and ignorant, but all the same I was waiting for this to happen – MCR were already one of the most “controversial” bands today, and are definitely one of the most misunderstood, even in the music industry and the rock community we are outcasts.

It says in the article that she had only been listening to MCR for 2 weeks, and if that is the case that says it all. She would not have managed to grasp the full extent of the meaning of the band and lyrics in that time, and might not have heard all the albums. I see young fans all the time confuse the meaning of MCR and have seen a couple think that if they listen to MCR they are obliged to dress in the “emo” fashion and act a certain way. This poor girl may have felt the need to fit in somehow. But, I suspect that there may have been something else that was affecting her and causing her pain other than just “emo”.
Sorry to say this but when her father saw that she had been self-harming, he should have immediately gotten her help. She obviously had some pain/issues.

Okay...
Why does the blame have to be put on somebody?
ANYbody, like?

I'm already preparing to be called 'emo' again...
Emo is a GENRE. Its music...
Not whatever tabloids, and narrow minded people make it out to be...

And she only discovered MCR two weeks ago?!
How would people blame them then..
There has to be something deeper then music preference..

Edit:
Just saw this commented on one of the newpapers:

"Music is not and has never been the reason behind self harm or suicide. I know from experience. People embrace music and the related subculture because it gives them a sense of camaraderie. Self harm is a method of calling out for help and it should have inspired more than a simple inquiry."

Someone makes sense..

ARGH. I hate it when MCR are blamed for suicides and shit like that all the time.
For one, MCR ARE NOT EMO.
and two, MCR are ANTI-SUICIDE!
I saw this on a bulletin posted by Kerrang on myspace, and i was absolutely fuming. And its bloody typical that the Daily Mail got in on the act. They're always bullshitting about 'emo' and stuff like that. I really feel for the girl and her family, but seriously, the world needs to stop blaming stupid 'cultures', and especially bands that are wrongly named as 'emo'.
And that comment about The Black Parade being the nickname of a place where Emo fans believe they will go when they die... well, thats just absolute bullshit, I was crying with laughter and fuming until steam came out of my ears at the same time at that. It just proves that a lot of journalists don't do their research. I just wish that the world would stop all the shit about emo and things... although it's not gonna happen in a hurry, sadly.

While I hope that MCR don't get fully caught up in this themselves, I would hope that Gee and the guys have something to say about it, and if they do, i reckon theyre gonna make damn well sure that people think differently about it.

My friend did a study for her final year project at university to see how people use music.
No matter what the music (trance, dance, rock, pop or whatever; one of the bands involved was MCR) people use it in the same way. It's down to the person recieving the music, not the music itself.
