It has been voted that Hybrid Embryos, which are about 99% human, but contain animal DNA, are not to be made illegal. They are said to possibly hold the cure for Alzheimer's, and the secret of stem cells. Some people think that it is morally, and ethically wrong, calling it 'Frankenstein Science', and it should be illegal, but other people think that it might hold the cure for a lot of things, and we need to explore this.

I personally think it a good thing, and it should be supported, because it might save hundreds of thousands of lives, if not, then it might dramatically improve many people's quality of life, which I think is important. I think people should be given every chance possible, and that means looking for more chances.

^Where exactly has it been made legal? It's probably different from country to country.
I know that it is illegal here, in Australia.

While I can see that it may help cure diseases, I personally think the idea of merging human DNA cells with animal DNA cells (such as pig or cow) is a tad ethically wrong. But that is just from my personal, ethical point of view.

If anyone doesn't know what it is exactly, I found a Q&A here which explains it.

I dont agree with it tbh, but. Im thinking of the exstream like Black Sheep lol. If anyone has seen that movie, thats why i dont agree with it lol.

But if its just combining cells not making a half human half animal thing. I'm fine with it=]

If it's been legalised then there must be potential, right? I mean, for it creating cures ect.

I think it'll take a long time before anything happens with it though, (i.e a breakthrough.)

I also heard they wouldn't be allowed to grow bigger than a pinhead. So they wouldn't really be alive as it were.

I think it's fine, to be honest; it's only like donating your body to medical science. The only difference is that you can choose that yourself, but if you're not an adult legally, your parents make that decision for you anyway.

Have any of you read the book series Maximum Ride? That's kinda what happens in the book. A group of embryos are combined with 1% avian DNA, resulting in them gaining the use of wings. Personally, I don't agree with it.

I think that if you are against it based on some fictional piece you have read or seen then you need to educate yourself about the issue.

My personal opinion is that as long as its just stemcells and very young embryos then its ok.
I do however turn against laws surrounding stuff like this being made at the same point as passing a law on what they call `Savior Siblings'. One is research and should never be allowed to be grown beyond embryo. The other one is about life and humans. They should be separated as the only thing they should have in common is that it takes a lot of science.

I really hope this becomes legal in the United States. I think it's a wonderful idea that could save many lives, if done the right way.

Having not yet looked into it, just first impression here - it makes me super nervous. I see its potential but the fact that it is combining two species' DNA makes me a little shaky. Sometimes science scares me. I know, call me stupid and reluctant to change. I just worry that sometimes we get too ahead of ourselves. I wish it was just 100% human. Why not, anyway? Why make it legal for it to be PARTIALLY human and not ALL human? Does anyone know this?

^because if it was 100% human, it wouldn't be a hybrid embryo, it would just be a normal embryo, and then it is called stem cell research.
If you remember that human insulin is produced by splicing the insulin gene into the plasmid DNA of bacteria, then in my opinion, it is just a progression of that, and is a good thing, cause it could cure so many different diseases.

Well yes, I know what that would make it, and I think that is a better option. I guess I should have clarified that. xDD

but why not both? why not try to use traits that animals have (maybe resistance to various infections) to create some sort of cure for something, but then have the stem cell research as well, just incase neither one works, or incase people react differently to one or other...

Because you are combining species that more than likely cannot be combined by any mating process. I mean, it just scares me; I have no scientific experince to judge how it would turn out in the ultimate end. It just scares the crap out of me.
