The UK's supposed to be known for its tolerance and yet there are large amount of people at my school who are really narow-minded and quick to judge about sexuality. And I can probably safely say that it's merely down to not bothering to find out the reality of it, which is that it's not a disease, not a choice, not a disgusting thing.

The other week a young man was beaten up for being gay during a night out in the uk too ^^

it's kind of brought the issue closer to home for people here and made them think about it more.

I think in general much of the world ACTS like it's less homophobic. I know plenty of people that would claim that they are all for gay rights, and they have queer friends, etc., and while they wouldn't go around outright insulting people, they still use references to queers as jokes and in ways that implies a bad value judgement towards them in their everyday language, and then when called out on it say that "oh but i didn't mean it in a bad way." Unfortunately, the fact that we perpetuate that type of language usage is bad whether or not we realise that we're being oppressive.

And then again, there's still just a lot of outright ridiculous prejudice going around, like the other day I got called a fag while walking around on my college campus. It wasn't that big a deal for me, but it shows how close-minded most people still are.

This may have been brought up, but are there any other straight people here who are offended when other people say "gay" in a negative way? I know I am.

Im gay, but it doesn't offend me oddly, i dont think people mean it insulting when they say it, i just think it has a different meaning now;

I think it's good that something like that doesn't offend you. Some people take things like that really seriously. I still don't think it's okay for people to say it, just because their are other people who ARE offended by that.

while I agree that I don't think that most people mean it in a mean way, I think that the use like that helps to create an otherance of those people that then helps perpetuate the us and them structure that leads to oppression.

I see your point, i just think that people can and will say things alot more homophobic and more offending things than that, so one little word like gay doesnt phase me.

ANyone can do whatever they want, although I don't think it's a good idea to advertise it everywhere you go, since it may not be completley safe everywhere.

People who judge by that are really shallow. After all, how is what a person does in the bedroom have any relevance to anyone else's life? All people are nasty. You can call anything that's sexual "sick". There's plenty of wierd concepts out there

Just because a man likes to bone other men that doesn't mean that he won't do his part and drop out of his place in society, all because of that. he'll do his job just the same.

This is a little going off the ongoing debate but, I actually found this a few weeks back, which I found to be a really interesting way of bringing the issue of persecution. although what happened was terrible, this way average people who'd just think "oh these things happen, how terrible" can actually get a shock out of their equilibrium, and be able to apply just what its like to have this done to yourself.
