I find it fascinating also. How can you not? how can it not interest you, what drives people to do these things?. There is a big difference between wanting to know what makes them tick and wanting to emulate them.

Who knows, we express ourselves through writing, painting, singing, maybe they express themselves through killing. To them, it can be an art.

Intreguing.
I like your way of seeing things.

Perhaps that's just it. Perhaps they see it as art...or perhaps they do it for the thrill. I saw a show once about a serial killer who would kill families at a time and stick mirrors in their eyes so they'd look alive and them he would rape them. X(
Sad.
Perhaps they just like to see things suffer on their account, just like Wargrave in And Then There Were None--by Agatha Cristie. (Brilliant book by the way.)

Or perhaps we'll never know.

The whole "art" idea is very good, it may be a good way to express themselves. The show you're talking about is actually a movie called Red Dragon, which is pretty relevant to this thread actually because the main character, Will, has an ability to get into the mindset of a killer and this helps him catch them. I think if someone is interested in how a killer thinks and what causes them to do what they do they should watch this movie. It's slightly disturbing in some scenes, though you'd probably be prepared for that should you want to enter the mind of a killer. Another good view into the mindset of a killer is the book "Nineteen Minutes" by Jodi Picoult, based on the Columbine shootings. It has a good insight to the killers mind, but there's other elements to the story as well so it doesn't really focus in on the killer all the time.

Personally, I agree that they can be very interesting. I'm especially interested in Columbine and Gacy.

As far as books and such that get into the head of the killer, I love Darkly Dreaming Dexter, and the television show is rather good too. Also Criminal Minds is a show based on the concept of a unit in the FBI whose job it is to 'profile' killers, aka get into their heads.

But then I have to ask the question, how close to reality are books/TV?
I don't think TV can ever truly capture the terror of a serial killer, so I think that thinking reality is like those shows isn't a wise idea.
Not directing it at you, just using your statement to make a general comment. Smile

I find that the way they think and the background history which could relate to them having problems with their thinking extremely interesting. Most serial killers have a troubled background but theres a thin line between those who kill, and those who make life better for themselves and learn from their (and others) mistakes. I love watching programs and getting somewhat into their mindset but like somebody has previously said, how can you judge reality on TV and books? I also find the science side of it extremely intriguing such as, brain scans which show that their brains have something extra or a higher level of chemical. For example, I was watching this one documentary and they said a certain chemical in the brain allows certain type of serial killer to easily lie more and make people believe them.
