I'm not sure how close the fires were to us [Newcastle] but we sure felt it. The sky was all orange and there was ashy fog everywhere and the wind was really hot and strong and to make things worse, the smoke rose up into the clouds and made thunder. It nearly blew my fence down.

I live in east gippsland and I think it was last week or the week before we had smoke covering the sky, i was in bairnsdale at the time and it covered the whole sky, it was around 3 in the afternoon and it was completely black, everytime it rained it rained ash. It was horrible.

They're doing burn-offs somewhere near here, so it's bake to the good old smoke haze. Now that it's more of a controlled thing and less "hmm, this could burn down my house and kill me" I like that it's all smoky, I like the smell.

Lol, I thought I was the only one who likes the smell XD
I don't like it when its a full on could-possibly-burn-the-house-down bushfire, but just backburns are ok lol

Haha, where I live, there's a massive valley that ends at our back fence,
& once, a few years ago, they decided to backburn in the valley, it was soooo funny!
There was about 15 firetrucks in our street, and at one stage we had 3 parked in our front yard/driveway,
& there was newspaper people, & tv people there, & my dad got interviewed for the channel 7 news XD
& the house 2 down from us was on the front page of the Sunday Telegraph, with a headline "Firefighters battle to save homes", it was only a backburn!

Haha, but on a slow news day...backburn, life-threatening-out-of-control-bushfire...all the same.
