I hope this is not already on the discussion board; I've searched and found nothing, so hopefully it should be okay.

Basically, I have a strong opinion about how much Football (Soccer) players are paid each week.
Last year, the average premiership footballer's salary per week was £676,000 (that's an incredible £35,152,000 a year) and that even counts for weeks in which they don't even play a match.
I find this absolutely outrageous, since people who are out there saving people's lives (ie. doctors, nurses, firefighters etc) don't get paid half that.

So;
Do you agree that footballers are paid far too much?
If so,
What do you think the money could be better spent on?
Where, generally, do you think Footballers should come on a numerical list of pay for different jobs? (ie. higher or lower than, say, doctors)

If you haven't already, please read the RULES for the Discussion Board before you post here.
Thank you.

Yes i definitely agree that footballers are paid too much, for what, kicking a ball around a pitch, i understand that they are representing the country but the amount they are paid is ludicrous! just look at the England team's performance this year, they didn't even get through to the world cup. The money could be better spent on healthcare, nurses wages etc as you mentioned or to help the poorer countries in the world. They should definitely bepaid lower than doctor's nurses etc, they are saving lives for a living, surely this assumes more importance? What does everyone else think? if you think they deserve the pay, why?

Although they may not be saving lives, they give many people entertainment and a chance to feel they belong to something, such as a family favourite club.
I'm not saying that they deserve that amount of many they get paid, as it could be better spent on people who either save lives such a fire men, doctors paramedics or people who do jobs that are very hard to do such a sewage jobs. But we need to think that we need to think about the players entertainment value on the country.

I agree, they do entertain us and give us a sense of patriotism. But still, tennis players for example, represent us for our countries but they only (and rightly) get paid from winning something; a competition, when they deserve it. Thats the point; tennis players work on becoming very good at the sport, in order to win competitions, and from that, prize money. Now, loads of kids all over the world are wanting to become footballers, many of them knowing that they (if they make it) will be paid a fortune, from them hardly doing anything.

footballers are obviously paid too much, you'd have to be king of europe at least to be getting £35 mil a year. what i dont get is why so many people seem to find this normal. olympic medallists are world class athletes who aren't earning that much but its okay for footbllers to? weird

Both sportsmen and hollywood actors are paid far too much. For being able to do something they love that requires such little school and is probably their passion, not to mention has little effect on improving anyones lives beyond entertainment, I believe they should be paid as much or LESS then Teachers.
Afterall, if the educators of new new tomorrow are dirt poor, the entertainers should be poorer. It's amazing how this world works

Sure many people find this an enjoyable sport, but why are they paid so much? So they can do a few tricks with their feet and a ball. What about they people out there who actually rise there life's everyday and get no where near that kind of money.
Football players should pay so much of their wage to charity, help people living in poverty and the homeless on the streets. They SHOULD do these things, but not many do, I see them buying sports cars and clothes they will only wear once. Little help has been given by football players, more should be done.

For alot of them, it takes alot of schooling to get to be the best!

Many aren't just born with the amazing ability to act or to play sport, they worked hard at that passion.
Training and attending clubs!

I think that statment is incorrect.

They should be paid less and put the money to better use. Instead they just go and blow it on of flash cars and insanely expensive houses and jewelry and stuff!!

Evidently, their wages are ridiculous and, quite frankly, could be better spent on just about anything.

However, why they are paid so much? It's called a free market. They are paid so much because there is a large demand for footballers and not that much choice (at the top level at least). The fact is that it's in proportion with everything else in the football industry (that is at premiership level). The fans are ready to pay ridiculous amounts for tickets, sponsors are willing to pay ridiculous amounts just to get their logo on the seats at a stadium etc.

The reason that they earn more than doctors/nurses etc. is because they are in a far more profitable business. Of course, Gordon Brown's complete ineptitude as chancellor is also a factor (and the general failures of the labour government). There is also no demand for doctors and nurses. Everyone coming out of med school for the next few years won't be able to get a job, because they're all taken and foreign doctors and nurses will be cheaper to hire (and will be hired due to the complete fucking up of the NHS).

Also, you have to bear in mind that they do pay a huge amount of taxes.

Firstly, it's not all footballer's who get paid ridiculous wages.

Take my local club.
None of them are millionaires.

They're paid a reasonable price; in my opinion that means the passion for the sport is still there, not the thought of the cheque that will come in if they score a hat trick.

I think that maybe premier footballers don't deserve the wages they get at all though.
I think that they should perhaps be comfortable, okkay, but not rolling in it.

I had another point but I've forgotten.
I'll come back if I remember.

What about small clubs and teams, ones that aren't premiership.
Their wages are fairly reasonable and small.

Do you think they're over payed?
