Unit 731 was a biological testing ground in Manchuria, China during World War II. It was created by Japan to run experiments using humans, the results of which were used to help their army. They took the Chinese to this testing ground and did pretty much unspeakable things to them. They were subjected to frostbite, terrible diseases, injections, bomb explosions, bacteria and vivosections (disections while the test subject is still alive and usually not on any form of anasthetics). There were, in fact, 500 different experiments tested on several different people, each more horrible than the next. This wasn't just like shooting them or poisoning them (although that would, of course, be absolutely awful and still not acceptable), this was putting them right next to bombs, or at different distances to see the effects. This was allowing people to die of frostbite so they can use the studies to help their own soldiers. This was infecting children with horrible diseases to vivosect them and see how it effects them. This was injecting fluids into people's eyes to see what happens. At least 300,000 people were brutally massacred.

Japan never formally appologized to China. Most people have never even heard of this attrocoty because it was so well hidden. The Holocaust, because of how many more people were killed, was publicized much more.

Questions to consider:
-Do you think Japan still owes and appology to China? Why or why not?
-Do you believe that the Holocaust should have been publicized more than this or should these attrocities have been brought into the light? Why or why not?
-Do you think this should be part of the curriculum in public school Social Studies? Why or why not? If so, in what grade should it be taught.
-What can the world do to prevent things like this from happening again?

Also, if I missed or got any information wrong, feel free to correct me.

No. I think although it is horrific that these things happened the people who are responsible are probably long gone. As are the victims. I don't think you can hold a nation responisble for its predecessors' actions personally.

I think it's wrong that this was not brought and still isn't brought to people's attention. I think that it is important that people know about these things to prevent them happening in the future. People learn from their mistakes, humanity as a whole does too.

Yes. Absolutely 100% yes. People need to know these things. Ignorance is never good. People should learn all the facts so they can make a judgement for themselves. Then people can act on it if anything as unacceptable as this happens again in the future. I don't know about grades, but here in the UK I know WW2 is part of the history course, as is Japan's invasion of Manchuria. For GCSE (year 11 age 15-16) students it would not be out of place on the existing syllabus.

I agree with The Magic Fairy. Those who were a part of Unit 731 will be long gone by now. If Japan were to apologise, it would seem insincere, and it wasn't coming from those who had done wrong.

I definatly do. I hadn't even heard of this until reading so, and I think it's disgusting. Both the Holocaust and this deserve to be brought the public's eye equally, although I do think (sorry if this is going off topic), it should be made more clear that it wasn't just Jews who died in the Holocaust.

Yes, I think it's important for young people to be informed of how the world works. It also raises awareness and can help prevent future similiar tradegies from occuring. I think from the age of 11 onwards, it should be taught in history lessons.

I think maybe Unit 731 should have been publicised a little more than it was (not more than the holocaust, just more than it was) because it was horrible and a lot of people don't know about it (like me)
But maybe not over publicised because it could have cause an even larger problem or war at the time

I definitely think it should be taught in schools. If its not, what's stopping a kid from thinking its okay one day and starting it again.
I think middle school and up (about 11 and up) would be the best age to teach it, any younger may be too young
