I searched "gun control laws" and "gun control" and didn't come up with anything. My apologies to everyone if this is a duplicate.

In Virginia, where I live, the only time you need a permit to carry a gun is if you want to carry it so that it is concealed (IE, out of a general bystander's view, like in a purse or coat pocket) and there is no waiting list. Currently only 20 of the 22 federal gun laws are annually enforced, and only 2% of the cases that break gun laws are prosecuted. In 2003, the United States of America had 30,242 gun-related deaths (which could be suicide, homicide, or unintential shootings) compared to 6 in New Zealand, 56 in Japan, 96 in Great Britain, and 168 in Canada- countries where the gun control laws are either extremely strict (compared to those in the US) or guns are simply outlawed.

1) Should it be made harder for people to buy guns? (I know that in VA you have to be 18 to purchase a rifle or shotgun and 21 to purchase a handgun)
2) Should safety features like trigger locks and simple lock boxes be required for everyone who has a gun with children in the house?
3) Should felons of violent crimes be allowed to purchase weapons?
4) Should the government do background checks on everyone who applies for a gun and/or gun permit?
And, of course, any other question you wish to raise.

The problems with gun crime, particulary in the US, is the mentality. The amount of mass shootings and accidental shootings in the us is unfathomable to people such as my self who live in places like Australia. We just don't have the same gun culture as you which is part of the problem. I know a lot of americans think it is their right to arm and protect themselves by keeping a gun in the house.( i apologise for the generalisation) I believe its in the constitution..something about the right to bear arms... But in Australia there's a completely different mentality. Its not....i don't know how to word this...usual for you to keep a gun in your house. When the gun laws changed in australia, everyone was asked to turn in any firearms they owned to collection points.

But in answer to you questions
1) Yes, definetley
2)Yes, but if you have children in your house you shouldn't even have a gun.
3)No
4)I think it should be harder to get a permit in the first place. I think you need to change to laws completely. If it wasn't legal for everyone to own a gun, there would be less gun related deaths, accidental or otherwise.

^^you're right, it is in the constitution: the second ammendment says "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

However, all of the amendments, like the first one (which gives the rights to free speech, freedom of religion, and freedom of the press), for example, have restrictions. Just because we have freedom of speech doesn't mean you can say anything anytime anywhere. Just because we have freedom of religion doesn't mean you can sacrifice a virgin whenever you feel like it. Why can't the second amendment have these restrictions, too?

I think that the U.S. should be way more strict with the gun laws. Those statistics are really bad compared to all those other countries. I don't think felons of violent crimes should be allowed to own a gun anymore, they abused their privleges by going off and shooting someone. The govt. should do background checks on the people who legally aquire any type of gun, that way they know the hands that they're putting a lethal weapon into. That way, we might not have as many gun-related deaths.

1) definately. i dont think guns should be legal at all. they arent over here. like, just having a gun. but if some countries are going to allow guns, then the laws definately need to be tightened.
2) there definately should be locks and safety triggers, but i agree with amity. if there are young children in the house, you shouldnt have a gun! i know a lot of people say 'oh, its for protection'. there are other ways to protect your family!! and if guns werent legal, then the other person probably wouldnt have a gun. so its not like you need to have one against theres. know what i mean? lol.
3) no way. absolutely not!
4) i think thats a very good idea. then they know who they are selling guns to! even though i dont agree with it! but you know what i mean.

I don't understand why just anyone is allowed to buy guns in America. Here in Australia, you need to have a gun license to own a gun, and even then the process can be quite lengthy. My dad went for a gun license last year, and it seemed to take ages.

So, from my point of view, I think it should definitely be made harder for people to buy guns in America. It seems that it is so easy for guns to fall into the wrong hands, what with school shootings etc.

In regards to the safety features, I think it is a necessity if you have small children in the house. Either that, or you have a secure place to put it out of the children's reach, like a gun safe, where only the gun owner knows the password in order to unlock it.

People who are felons / criminals should definitely be banned from owning guns. Not just in America, but in every country. Depending on the crime and the severity of it, they could be a danger to others.

And over here, the government already does background checks for people who want a gun permit / license. If they don't in America, then they should. Mainly for safety reasons.

I just love the fact that many people don't realize that CRIMINALS WILL BE CRIMINALS. They're going to buy a gun, they're going to steal a gun, it doesn't matter which laws are set in place.

^In this thread though, we're not just talking about criminals... we're talking about gun laws in general. Read the title of the thread.

i definately think the gun laws should be enforced more- no way should people with a criminal record be able to purchase one. Special safety features should be required of those who want to purchase guns and keep them in house where small children live. I also think that there should be more permits needed for gun ownership and that requiring these permits should a legnthy process involving background checks, current living situation, ect. The argument that guns are for protection is not as relavent as it used to be- it is simply too easy to get a gun in your possession now adays.
