Basically, Truancy is the act of skipping school, for what ever reason.

"Over 1,000,000 children are absent from school every year. On a typical school day there are 50,000 children who are not in school.

Over 8 million school days are lost across the UK each year"

Parents can end up with fines and prison sentances if their child doesn't turn up for school, do you think this is fair?

Personally, I don't think it always is. All a parent can do is make sure the child leaves for school, or drop the child of at school themselves, parents cannot physically make their child attend, they can only encourage and punish them for not. Many parents may not even be aware their child is skipping school.

But, some parents do allow their children to skip school. They don't care either way what their children do and make it much easier to miss schoolthan it should be. When this is the case, I think parents should be faced with a fine, but not a prison sentance, as they may have other children to look after and seeing one's parent(s) going to prison can be a traumatising thing.

Why do you think children commit truancy?
I think it can be for a number of reasons. For example, the child may not get on with teachers, or their peers.
Their homelife migt be bad, and with no support from their parents, feel that they will become nothing, so see school as pointless.
ect ect.

How can Truancy be tackled?
I think that the core root of truancy for each child must be estabishled and worked on from there. I also think that parents should always to some extent pushing the child to succede (but not to the point where the child feels useless if they get something wrong in school).

What do you think? Feel free to add on what ever you like.

I don't think every parent who's child does not attend school on a regular basis should be fined.

Some children/teens just won't go, for whatever reason.
Whether it be to fit it, laziness, home issues, etc.
You cannot physically make them attend school.

However, if a parent doesn't give two damns about their kid bunking, then yeah, they should be fined.
A good education has never been as important as it now.

I don't know how it can be reduced though, that depends on the school.
You need to make the kids want to go.

Just to quickly clear this up, parents aren't immediately fined for their child skippping school. It's specifically when they actively allow them, for example taking them shopping during school hours. If the parent doesn't know that they're bunking, or actually can't stop them, then they're not getting a fine.

I've gotta be quick, so I'll just say, some children just can't work in school, in a similar way, some people are just unemployable. For whatever reason they can't learn things in that structure, or are just totally incapable of learning complicated theory.

I do not see anything wrong with skipping a few days every semester. School is hard work and for some people, myself included, a 2 day break isn't enough to build back energy and be ready for the school week. Sometimes, of course, kids skip school too much and fall behind. While I do think that there are a few things in life that should be put ahead of education (only a few Very Happy) it's not right for some child to miss 10 days a month.

As for why they do it, I have several theories:
1. They are not doing well in classes to begin with.
2. Do not get along with teachers or peers, as Simple And Clean said.
3. Bad family life.
4. Just don't want to deal with the stress of school.
5. Don't live where a good school system is. IE, not very good teachers, not a large amount of people passing whatever standardized test is taken in the region, not a very high average grade for the classes.

I don't think anyone should be fined for something like this. Maybe there's a good reason behind it. Maybe, by sitting and talking with the truancy committer, you can discover that they're being abused by a boyfriend/girlfriend, don't like a teacher, are being threatened/bullied, or any number of things.

Some kids just skip certain periods. Like maybe they hate their math teacher, so they don't go to that class. Or could be something stupid. I've often skipped last period to go to McDonalds with my friend.
Alot of times though it seems like it's more of a stress thing. Like "I just can't deal with this class now" kind of thing.
It's really easy to leave school and come back, even if it's a closed campus. You leave out of a back door and when you come back you just say you had a doctor's apoinment or your just getting to school then. Schools aren't that good at stopping kids from skipping.

i never really skip as such. but like, head down to sickbay if theres a class i dont want to or even hang in the bathrooms. never actually leave the grounds... you know. lol. our school is very very strict. if your away from school, they call your parents.

but yeah. i agree, if parents know about the child skipping school, and they allow them to do it a lot, then they should be fined. thats only fair.

I have never skipped school.

Call me uptight or whatever, but I think that when you enroll in a school it is your responsibility to gain all the benefits.
I see no point in skipping school. I mean sure you might miss one period, but maybe they learned something that leads into other things, and then whoops! you're totally confused on what you are doing.

And you may have a few laughs with friends to look back on, but having an education is more important.

I don't think there's really any reason for people to make a fuss over people skipping school. School is boring, so they should understand (then again, school is important so stay in it!). Some kids stay home and they have reasons for it, some are good and some aren't good enough. It's common, I think, for some kids to skip because they just really hate school. Sometimes it's because they don't have a lot of friends, scared of bullies, or mean teachers. Then there are those kids who skip school just for funsies to go do something, well, fun. There's an endless list of reasons, and they're not always bad, so for the govt. or whoever to come up with the idea of fining the parents, that's just unreasonable.

I think children skip school because they are pushed into peer pressure or one of them scenes where you want to act rebelious. There's been situations were they've been skipping whole terms [well nearlly], well maybe they are being bullied? Or having school problems...##

I think teenagers skip school due to a mixture of simply not liking school and being bullied. But some people are just not suited to school, so if they don't feel like they're getting anything out of schooling, why would they turn up?
I'm not in highschool, but last year when I was in first year university, I hated most of my courses, so I just wouldn't turn up. I wasn't getting anything out of being there.

and some kids just don't feel like going in to school occaisionally.

it's the kid's responsibility to get to school, and if they don't want to go, a lot of them just aren't going to put themselves through the hassle of walking through the main doors every morning.

I've never skipped a whole day of school so to speak, except for my mum letting me have a day off to go wait in line for the MCR concert XD

But I have skipped classes...and the reason I did is because I hated those classes so much & the teachers were so horrid to me
Then again, sometimes my friend & I would get caught up in a conversation & skip a class just to talk

So maybe some of it comes from laziness XD
Maybe if teachers let us talk to each other once in a while...
