Quote
On Wednesday, May 14, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service listed the polar bear as threatened under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), giving the bear important new protections. The government said that climate change is destroying vital polar bear habitat, putting the species at risk of extinction. "WWF commends the Fish and Wildlife Service for heeding the unequivocal science that the survival of the polar bear is inextricably tied to its Arctic sea ice habitat, which is melting more rapidly than at any other time in recorded human history," said Margaret Williams, managing director of WWF’s office in Alaska. "We must take the necessary measures now to help save the polar bear. The ESA listing is an important first step, but we must also address the underlying cause of climate change: rapidly rising greenhouse gas emissions."

Thank you, George Bush. = ='

Yes thank you, I'm glad there is at least one other person here who accepts Global Warming and understands its consequences. How great a tradgety it would be if we let the largest land carnivore slip to extinction. And yet this is probably one of the most complicated missions of conservation for it is not really a matter of poaching or reservations, but of humanity continually using oil. ~ Rex

It's about time too, it's taken them long enough!

Things like this we talked about in college years ago, Polar bears being at risk of extinction or other things like climate cange isn't a new thing, but it seems to take ages for anyone or the government really to look up finally go "Oh wait, maybe we should do something!"

But maybe thats just governments and politics generally move quite slowly anyway... I suppose they can't jump headfirst into any decision. It's just frustrating!

Yes, and it's infuriating to know that, even with "special proctections" that the bears now have because of the endangerment, the Bush Admin STILL refuses to do anything about it, and refuses to do anything about global warming. It's bad enough that regular civilians think global warming is a myth created by scientists, but the government? This is ridiculous! The effects of greenhouse gases are visible to a blind person!

i recently did a report on endangered speices-just about every species had global warming listed as a cause that is threatening their numbers. Esp. creatures like polar bears, walruses, and seals whose entire life revolves around the cycles of the ice. it is simply incomprehensible.

^ In chemistry last year we had to calculate "How long it would take to melt the polar ice cap if all the hair dryers in the world were turned on next to it?" The correct/acceptable answer was anywhere from two to sixty years. The moral of the exersize was learning about global warming and what it really means. My village is rather conservative and I could hardly stand hearing the constant "Its not true, they can't prove gobal warming is a problem." Arrrgggg!

All right, we know the problme. Anyone have any ideas for solutions? Temporary, long term, political, environmental ect? ~ Rex

^^
political change-we need the gov to start enforcing some stuff in the US like limit on bad fuel economy a car can get so we dont have hummers and suburbans wasting gas or doing something like signing the Kyoto Treaty

and using alternative energy sources. we have so many-solar, wind, geothermal, nuclear, hydrogenfuel cell.ect

and more responsible logging when it comes to cutting down forests. the prob with that though its that half the time when people are logging its not just for wood-esp in southern america its for farm land for things like cattle and coffee

but yeh mostly governement change. if we had more support from the US government than maybe we could get some more stuff done. i cant wait until the next president-either way its definantly somone who is more environmently concious, but hopefully obama since he has metioned about signining the Kyoto Treaty a little.

Hah, alright, well political change?

Get involved with organizations such as:
-Defenders of Wildlife -- www.defenders.org
-World Wildlife Fund (WWF) -- www.wwf.org
-Union of Concerned Scientists (note that this is not geared solely towards scientists, anyone interested in scientific matters can join, or at least look into it) -- www.ucsusa.org
-Friends of the Earth (yeah, I know it sounds really corny, but these people do some REALLY good stuff for the world) -- www.foe.org (hah)
-Rainforest Action Network -- www.ran.org
-National Geographic Society -- www.nationalgeographic.com
-National Wildlife Federation -- www.nwf.org

I'm a member of almost all of these organizations, and I really believe they do great things. The one that I am particularly opposed to, however, is the Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA. It sounds like a good thing, but back when I was subscribed to their emails, they OPENLY refused to sign a petition of sorts to clean the air. It was ridiculous, I cried for months. Not really, but it was extremely stupid of them to do that, and they've since lost quite a few of their supporters, including me.

Environmental, I suppose we can clean up our own little corner of the world. It won't do much with one person cleaning up their block every day, but if you get everyone in the town cleaning up their block everyday, or gathering a group together to clean the neighborhood, that would be a tremendous help! And of course, QUIT driving those ridiculous Hummers! Not only are they gas-guzzlers, but they are UGLY sonofabitches. Boxes on wheels. Ye Gods.

^^ true. i belong to some of those
a lot of the problem is our culture in general.people in brazil and ecquador aren't cutting down there forests for themselves. they harm species in the beautiful rain forests and release co2s so we can have mocha lattes and drive suburbans. which is the horrific thing about global warming and its problems. unlike the big ozone issue a few years ago, the things causing the problem are huge contributers to the economy. which is why as i have said before, i dont think we are going to get anything done without governement support from the United States. we need the government to tell car companies that they have to sell cars with a certain fuel economy, the camery, a supposed great fuel economy car, is not that great compared to other countries. we need to do things like sign the Kyoto Treaty. we need a president that isnt back up by the oil companies and assigns somone to head a coucil on the environment who goes to lead up an oil company when he quits.

"... so we can have mocha lattes and drive suburbans."
I like that ^ ^
People need to open their eyes a bit wider. You have to LOOK for the effects of global warming, your life isn't just laid out in a blueprint right in front of you.

Speaking of Bush and the oil crisis, who do you think is the best candidate for the presidential election for next year? If anyone. =/

No more humans... what fun!
> <; A lot of people say all we have going for us is our intelligence, but sometimes I think we don't even have that. We forget we are animals just like everything else, and we are all a part of the food chain -- just like everything else. Yeah, of course we're the problem, but we're the solution as well, and it is pretty damn obvious we're not taking advantage of that.

Disgust

You! Everyone! Sign up for those organizations I posted a little while ago!
