My Chemical Romance – my story
The first time I ever heard My Chemical Romance was on Myspace, October 2006. I was looking at random people’s profiles when I entered one page and the first chords of Welcome to the Black Parade started playing. I don’t usually listen to songs on people’s profiles, but this song caught my attention. I found the intro very interesting; the piano, the singing. It got even better when the drums started playing. I was hooked. The more I listened, the more I liked it.

The name, My Chemical Romance, was a name that I think I had heard once or twice, but I always assumed it was some kind of metal band – nothing in my taste, in other words. I was very wrong.

A few days later, I saw the video to WTTBP on TV. “So these are the dudes that play that great song I heard the other day”, I thought. I really liked the video and decided to download the song. I also downloaded I’m not Okay (I promise) and The Ghost of You to see if they had any other good songs. I checked out their videos on Youtube (I fell in love with Helena. I still claim it to be one of the best videos ever).

Early November I bought The Black Parade. I didn’t consider myself I fan yet – it annoys me to no end when people say they are a fan of a band they have only heard a few songs by. It took one listen to the record, then I knew – this was something special. I played the record over and over again, and I haven’t stopped yet.

A funny thing I remember from when I first found out about MCR was that I knew the singer had a brother in the band, and, from the only pic I had, I had a lot of trouble trying to figure out which one was Frank and which one was Mikey. Haha.

I bought Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge some weeks after I got TBP. I had heard three songs from that CD and I was very curious about the rest. At first, I was surprised about how different they sounded from TBP. I wasn’t disappointed, though. I loved this CD just as much as I loved TBP.

As a Christmas gift I got I Brought You My Bullets, You brought Me Your Love and Life on the Murder Scene. I knew I was going to get them and I remember looking forward to them so much I barely cared about the other gifts. I would have been completely satisfied with only LOTMS and Bullets.

Yet again, I was a little surprised about how different this CD was. Some songs took some time to grow on me but now I like every single song. It would make my year if I ever got to see them perform a Bullets song live.

Since I became I fan, I have turned a lot of other people into MCR. My younger sister, first of all. She is 13, but I tell you, she loves them with all her heart and it is no “teenie-act”. I feel very sorry for her because she has never been able to see MCR live. There is an age limit in Sweden that says you have to be 13 to attend certain concerts, and she was only 12 when they came here. That, on top of the fact that the shows have been held far away from where we live, has made it impossible for her. I hope she gets a chance to see them one day.

I have also introduced one of my best friends to MCR. We’ve been to two MCR shows together.

A funny story – I introduced my sister to MCR, she introduced her best friend and she introduced her mother. I met the mother a while ago and she said, laughing: “It’s all your fault! It’s because of you I keep singing their songs all the time!”

I’ve finally gotten my brother to like them as well (simple – I ripped all the CDs to his computer without his knowledge. One day he came and told me “Hey, MCR rocks!”) My dad thinks they are good as well. He's very fond of Mama, Teenagers and especially Cancer. It happens that he asks me to turn up the volume when I play them.

I went to my first MCR concert April 9th 2007. Yup, Gerard’s 30th Birthday. It made the night extra special. It was the best show I had ever attended – so far. The best was yet to come.

Pier Pressure, July 1st 2007. A-m-a-z-i-n-g. I felt high, high on the music. It was one of the best feelings I’ve ever felt. I couldn’t stop smiling. I even slept with a smile on my face; my friend told me that the morning after.

And now I’m here. I have learnt a lot along the way. I have five dudes that I look up to more than anyone else and they have taught me something very important: it is okay to feel like an outsider, it’s okay to feel messed up, because the most important thing is to “be yourself, don’t take anyone’s shit and never let them take you alive”.
