| Cigarettes And Suicide Bleeding on the Floor Age: 35 Gender: Female Posts: 1725 | SoManyVerbsAndNouns: I don't have any experience with them personally, so I'd recommend you go to a studio and get them to swap the jewellery for you. Most places will charge a small fee for it (a couple of dollars, to cover things like the use/sterilisation of tools, and the 'labour' costs), but at least that way you know you're not injuring yourself |
| SoManyVerbsAndNouns Killjoy Age: 34 Gender: Female Posts: 26 | ^^ Thanks, that's what I thought. Taking it out myself seems pretty inconceivable, so I'll have to go back to a piercer if/when that time comes. I'm not looking forward to that, though. This baby's gonna hurt like a mofo when it comes out. |
| Butters Salute You in Your Grave Age: 29 Gender: Female Posts: 2042 | One in each lobe.................>.< nothing special |
| City Lights. Salute You in Your Grave Age: 28 Gender: Female Posts: 2374 | Ear peircings. One on each. But I'm debating whether or not to get an eyebrow piercing.. How much does it hurt to get it there, rather than on your lip? |
| idk. my bff jill? Demolition Lover Age: 27 Gender: Female Posts: 18372 | Two holes in each ear and left cartilage. My mom said she had no problem with me getting my bellybutton done, but my dad would kill me if he found out. My mom is being hesitant right now about it,though. Anyone know how I can convince her? The place I'd get it done at is a really good place with good piercers and tattoo artists. |
| The Rumor Awake and Unafraid Age: 29 Gender: Female Posts: 11966 | Glen Coco: Yeah, it works. Both my first holes are up to 10mm (00g), and I still have two other regular piercings next to each. |
| Evil_Angel Motor Baby Age: 33 Gender: Female Posts: 952 | Hmmm lets see. My left ear is pierced 4 times, one is the cartilege. My right ear is pierced 3 times. My left eyebrow used to be peirced. My cousin pierced it with a safety pin, and damn that hurt and I turned whiter than a ghost. But I ended up having to take it out for a school thing and it closed up. Then 2 weeks ago I got the right eyebrow pierced, but professionally this time xD |
| my chemical romance. Banned Age: 28 Gender: Female Posts: 18584 | Two piercings in each ear lobe. My nose. (Grown over). My lip (Grown over). Everything but my nose was pierced by myself. Bleh. |
| Cigarettes And Suicide Bleeding on the Floor Age: 35 Gender: Female Posts: 1725 | City Lights.:Ehh, eyebrows are super-painless. Mine literally felt like a mosquito bite (you know that tiny little tingle that makes you look down and realise there's a filthy insect helping itself to a blood donation?). I asked the piercer if she'd got the needle out of the wrapper yet and she raised her eyebrows and said, 'Umm, I'm just putting the bead in the ring, I'm done!' I was like, 'Whoa, that was really easy!' Lips sting a bit more than eyebrows, seeing as the mouth and lips have a bajillion really sensitive nerve endings (to help you recognise when you're putting something unsavoury in your mouth, a good old throwback to our Neanderthal origins, when they ate things like poison berries without realising), but still, it's quite quick and easy and relatively painless. Just a bit of a sting for a few minutes, nothing major. But yeah, if pain is a big deciding factor, I'd say go with the eyebrow, it's almost completely painless. idk. my bff jill?:Well, if you've already got the argument of getting it done at a nice, clean, professional studio, the battle's half there. I personally had been nagging my parents for two years to let me get my nose pierced, so they compromised and let me get my bellybutton done as a birthday present - their concern was that they didn't want people to look down on me because I had visible piercings, so in their minds a navel ring wasn't that big a deal because it was out of sight. Try that one with your mum - tell her that you can just cover your midriff so your dad doesn't know any better. Heck, what he doesn't know won't hurt him, and if your mum's okay with it then it's a 2-1 vote, so he loses anyway! Maybe do what my parents did, and get it as a 13th birthday present. Technically, 13 signifies your crossing over from child to teenager, so maybe he'd be okay with it in that case - after all, you won't be his little baby forever and what better way to help you make the transition to adolescent than by allowing you a little responsibility and taking you to get your bellybutton pierced? If it helps, he can pick out a nice piece of jewellery to make it feel more like a gift than 'Okay, I'm sick of hearing you nag me'. I don't know, only you know your dad and his reasons for not wanting you to get pierced, but the ones that always worked for me were things like promising to help out more around the house, soothing their fears of people looking down on me for being pierced by getting ones that were socially acceptable (ie ears, nose, navel where nobody could see it etc), and pointing out that hey, a bellybutoon ring is a bellybutton ring - it doesn't make you slutty, or a bad student (for that one you'll need decent grades in school lol), or a self-mutilating freak. It just makes you a teenager who is interested in finding new ways to express your personality without hurting yourself or anybody else, like dyeing your hair or wearing a certain pair of shoes. |
| Doodles Demolition Lover Age: 28 Gender: Female Posts: 17799 | Is it safe to wear retaniers in peircings for a long time. I mean, only about seven days? I don't know a lot about retainers. >< |
| Cigarettes And Suicide Bleeding on the Floor Age: 35 Gender: Female Posts: 1725 | ^I wouldn't recommend retainers be left in, say, lip, nostril or eyebrow piercings for a long time, because the risk of them falling out and being inhaled/swallowed/poke you in your eye is pretty high. That is, if you mean 'retainers' as in the clear plastic rods that are a few millimetres long and have no balls/flat backs etc to hold them in place. I only wear retainers when going to work, and I have to be careful to check them very often and be very careful when eating on my lunchbreak, because they tend to come loose and can be swallowed or lost. If, by 'retainer' you mean jewellery that is exactly the same as metal jewellery (ie bars with screw-on beads, captive bead rings etc) but made from clear plastic rather than metal, you'll have no problems. The plastic they're made from is designed to be compatible with human flesh and therefore won't cause any irritation etc. |

| Butters Salute You in Your Grave Age: 29 Gender: Female Posts: 2042 | W00T! Tomorrow i'm getting my right cartilage and another in bothn my lobes! Does your cartilage hurt more than your lobes??? |
| Belle! At The Disco Salute You in Your Grave Age: 33 Gender: Female Posts: 2750 | Question, Does it hurt to get a septum piercing? And is it a good or bad idea to get it done? Like, can anything bad happen or something? |
| amye! Salute You in Your Grave Age: 28 Gender: Female Posts: 4956 | I bought a fake lip ring once at Claire's and wore it to freak out my mom. |
| Evil_Angel Motor Baby Age: 33 Gender: Female Posts: 952 | MyWayHomeIsThruU: Yea, the cartilage hurts more than the lobes, but not too bad. Hope that helps |
| Cigarettes And Suicide Bleeding on the Floor Age: 35 Gender: Female Posts: 1725 | MyWayHomeIsThruU: Chyeah. Think about it, your lobes are just a lump of spare flesh, the upper ears are flesh covering cartilage, which is semi-solid and basically a soft substitute for bone! Depending on what piece of cartilage you're getting pierced, the pain will vary. For instance, if you're getting the outer rim of your ear pierced, it won't be very bad at all, but if you're getting an inner piece (which tends to be harder, for example rook/daith), it's going to sting a little. My tragus was fine because the cartilage there is quite soft, but the tough piece of cartilage where my daith piercing is felt akin to having an axe buried in the side of my head for a few days afterwards. So it just depends on where you're getting it done... I hate people saying 'Cartilage' because it's so generic, it doesn't mean anything other than 'not my earlobe'. Dance.To.This.Beat.: I honestly can't say exactly what it feels like to get a septum piercing, but yes it is going to hurt, just like any other piercing. It's just the degree of pain that varies, and that depends not only on the part of the body getting pierced, but your personal pain threshold etc. I mean, I have absolutely no problems getting anything pierced because I have a high pain threshold and I'm not scared of needles, but a friend of mine only has her earlobes pierced and said she'll never get anything else done because the pain of that was excruciating. As far as good idea vs bad idea, well, that would depend on your circumstance. Eg if you're getting it done because you like the way it looks, you have no impediments to keeping it such as disapproving parents or a job that won't accept it, and you're getting it done in a decent studio with an experienced piercer and willing to educate yourself fully on the aftercare of the piercing, then it's a good idea. However, if you're getting it to, say, make your loserface crush think you're hardcore, or defy your parents' rules, or you know you'll get fired from your job/suspended from school for having it, then it's probably not such a good idea. You know your individual circumstance and will be able to make that decision for yourself. With regards to something going wrong, well, the risk of a septum piercing screwing up is about the same as any other piercing - very, very little if done correctly and cared for properly. Basically, the biggest thing is to make sure the piercer knows what they're doing - septums can end up crooked if the piercer doesn't line it up properly, and crooked piercings look pretty bad. If it's pierced nice and straight, you're almost out of the woods. If you have to keep it out of sight for school/job reasons, get it pierced with a retainer that flips up inside your nose and keep it flipped up, rather than pulling it down and pushing it up regularly. Once it's healed you can flip as much as you like, but while it's healing be gentle. And, as always, keep it clean, clean, clean. Anybody with a nose piercing (including septum) knows that they can get kind of gross thanks to good old snot, but saline-soaked cotton buds three times a day should keep you in good stead - just make sure to clean off those crusty/gooey bits while you're at it. But yeah, as long as you get it pierced straight and keep it infection-free, I see no reason anything should go wrong. It just pays to be careful with such piercings when, say, blowing your nose, because tugging at them can cause a bit of a shock. |

| Belle! At The Disco Salute You in Your Grave Age: 33 Gender: Female Posts: 2750 | Cigarettes And Suicide: Okay, thank you! I'm getting it done because I think it looks VERY pretty, And I am willing to take the pain it may cause, And I am willing to care for the responsibilities of cleaning etc... Its just that my parents disapprove of all piercings (except ears) and they know I'm REALLY self conscious and stuff, But what they don't get, Is that piercings actually bring my self esteem up (it may sound weird but is true) And I want my parents to let me get it and all, But they just don't understand that i WANT it, and that I will actually take care of it, and make sure it doesn't get all gross (unlike my sister...) But i also heard that is makes your nose droop Is that true? |
| Cigarettes And Suicide Bleeding on the Floor Age: 35 Gender: Female Posts: 1725 | I understand what you mean about piercings making you feel good about yourself - my husband is convinced that I get my ink and piercings done purely for shock value and attention-seeking, but it's not like that at all: I think they look gorgeous and every time I get a new one, I feel much prettier! If you're getting it done against your parents' wishes, I'd advise that you get it pierced with a retainer and keep it flipped up until it's healed, that way you not only can hide it from them for a while, but when it's healed you can show them that you've managed to care for it for several weeks, through the danger period, and that you're obviously responsible enough to keep it now that there's no risk of it getting infected. What is meant by 'nose droop' is not, like, that it'll cause paralysis or a noticeable drooping of the entire nose. Pinch your septum - see how the cartilage stops and there's a thicker bit of flesh at the end of it? Pull that lump down a little until there's a gap between the cartilage and the end of your septum. This gap is called the 'sweet spot' and it's where the needle goes through, rather than trying to punch through tough cartilage. Now, see how you've pulled that little end bit of skin down? This is what is known as 'nose droop', because obviously once there is a piece of jewellery in that skin, it can't retreat back up over the cartilage, so the end of your septum will be pulled down a few millimetres by the jewellery resting against the end of the cartilage... if that makes any sense. It's only really noticeable to you (I don't notice a droop on my friends' noses, but I know I'd notice it if I had my septum pierced), so don't stress about appearances too much, and it is in absolutely no way harmful or dangerous to your health or the success of the piercing. |
