The world is not a sandbox and nations should not act like five year old children, shunning others for not sharing their toys. Nations are made up of millions of people and run by the few in charge--just because those few do not or cannot do what we want them to does not mean that we should ignore the tragedies inflicted on their people. That's childish at best, and downright malicious at worst. Not to mention that Africa was destroyed by westerners, so it's the least we can do to grant them unconditional aid, without ulterior motives. And that goes for anyone--we're all people and borders drawn out on maps shouldn't be able to change that.
harrrimapirate Killjoy Age: 33 Gender: Male Posts: 1	May 31st, 2007 at 09:40pm genocide sucks. obviously. thousands or even millions of people dying of course isnt good. at all. many people fall into denial when faced with a genocide. it is how they cope. also, some people may be so far into their beliefs that they see the victims as meaningless and therefore have no remorse. genocide needs to be stopped. racism, religion, etc. are the main causes of genocide. i think if we can make awareness higher and lower the amount of racial hate crimes, we can help prevent genocides.

I happened to purchase my first issue of AP (Alternative Press) some couple weeks ago, and the frontwoman for a metal band - Otep was her name, I believe - and opened my eyes to Darfur. We are getting more aware of this horrid thing - look at Linkin Park's What I've Done video and Nickelback's If Everyone Cared video. But people aren't doing enough. I believe we need to raise awareness and have our government step in. Genocide is a terrible thing. It's like attempted extinction of the human race. One death on a family is a hard thing. A million plus deaths with no families, because people are dying too much, must be hard. I vote to stop genocide. It's an awful thing, and something needs to be done.

I looked it up on wikipedia and the pictures were really disturbing. Maybe someone could explain why this genocide took place? I don't think you can say it was 'as terrible as the holocaust'. In the holocaust, the death toll is estimated at between 6 and 12 million, the Armenian Genocide's death toll is estimated between 300,000 and 1.5million. Yes, still terrible, but there is a big difference. There are genocides still going on, and thats what I think needs addressing. People should be educated about the holocaust, and other genocides, but they should also be educated about the current world happenings e.g. Darfur. ahh yes...the armenian genocide...i happen to have very strong point of views on this topic...being that my lover is armenian. well it was between the ottoman empire and armenia. as you know im sure the ottomans wanted to basically rule and get land, and did so by brutally killing innocent people. so soon came armenia. for a while thay had adapted to armenian culture, and they were so called "friends". though the ottomans, now to be known as the turkish backstabbed the armenians. armenia was in there fucking way since it was in the middle so they decided to attack armenia. they destroyed the land, be headed men, raped and starved women and little children and brutally tortured the armenians because they were in there fucked up way. though yes more people died in the hollocaust, it was 1.5 out of 2million armenians which they killed once again because they were in the way basically. now today the turks refuse to admit there was ever an armenian genocide, even though the term genocide was first used and created for the armenian genocide, and it amazes me how on wikipedia and many other sites there are these pictures of turkish men standing tall and proud, and right below them, the heads of armenian men. and yet "there was no genocide". they are being very fucked up about the whole thing. and because they are basically brainwashed from when they are kids that the armenians are stupid, there was no genocide, armenia is now an extremely small country located on the very top of turkey. they refuse to admit there was ever a genocide because if they do armenia would get there well deserved land back, a lot of money and there mountain which was the symbol of armenia for many years. turkey decided to rename this mountain, the mountain of sorrows (or something like that) to basically diss the armenians. and still to this day all our global history teachers refer to the ottoman empire as an elite, wonderful fucking army. this my friend was the armeian genocide. but no matter how strongly i feel about the armenian genocide, what pickled chilli said is true. we need to really focus on whats going on right now, the genocide in darfur.

We had no need for this so called "war." And how do you expect them to help? I have yet to meet a Turk who actaully agreed that the armenian genocide happened. ..a lil side story, in my history class my teacher made us have a debate on why the genocide happened, and we had one turkish girl in the class, i knew her views on the whole thing so i thought id push her into seeing it my way and showing her that she was wrong. the day before the debate i printed out many pictures of turks standing beside their victims. and even when i showed her all the pictures and told her some of the grusome storys that went on, she still would not change her mind about it and still thinks that the whole armenian genocide never took place. i dont understand how soo many Turks can be so ignorant about it and say that it never took place.

Dude, Africa isn't one place. There are more countries in Africa than in any other continent. Almost all of them are either too poor to help, ruled by dictators who wouldn't want to, or have their own problems at the moment. And then there are countries like Algeria and Libya that wouldn't want to help because they're kind of Middle Eastern and might be more likely to favor the other side.

Yes, still terrible, but there is a big difference. I wouldn't say that to an Armenian person. The 300,000 estimate is that used by Turkish officials. Most international historians estimate as between 1.2 and 1.5 million; 90% of the Christian Armenian population. No; not as massive casualties as the Holocaust, but just as terrible. Also, in a way, the Armenian genocide contributed to the Holocaust. When Hitler was questioned of how he would manage his plans to systematically kill the Jews without international notice and intervention, he responded with something along the lines of, "No one remembers the Armenians." you say that like its something to be proud of.

It's not their fault, though. It's the way those people grew up. Think of Hitler, he seems like he would be a good leader, no? He's strong and he doesn't give up. But, he hated anyone jewish and decided to get rid of all of the jews. He must've had reasons. I mean, I don't support the neo nazi or the nazis that hated the jews...but you have to understand that everything happens for a reason. Something in his past made Hitler hate anyone jewish, maybe sexual abuse, or something small but scarring, like a break-up with a jewish girl he loved. I mean, I don't know very much about history, and if hitler already explained why he hated the jewish so much and I"m wrong then; sorry. But he had his reasons, he wouldn't just do such horrible things to these people if he didn't really believe they were evil. So, being racist, sexist, etc... doesn't mean you're stupid. It means you grew up with people that were that way, you decided that after a time, or that some traumatising event just made you that way.

And, what the fuck does africa have to do with this? Africa doesn't have to help america, anyway. They're having their own economic problems or whatever. And, america gets into too many wars, if anyone was thinking of helping the U.S out in the last 2 wars they should have changed their minds by now. You know what? I don't care if you don't like to hear the 'help out the needy' stuff. Help out South and Central america, huh? Help out Asia? Help out Africa? Help out someone, don't just start a war that has no end in sight because you believe it's 'for the best'. The people in poor countries don't ask to be poor, don't ask for your help. 'fuck the people in africa.'? No, 'fuck' you. You don't want to help? You don't have to. But don't post on this thread telling everyone to fuck off.

I agree, it is terrible, and that's why we need to realise that something has to be done now to stop genocides being repeated. But if anything is being done, it's not enough, because genocide is happening now. We shouldn't be talking about statistics. The victims of genocide should be thought of as the people they were. Ordinary folk like you or I, with dreams, aspirations, families, homes, possessions, plans for what they were going to do tomorrow. Every victim of genocide has had all of that taken away, and whether we're talking of 300,000, 1.5 million or 12 million, we shouldn't forget that. And we shouldn't spill out numbers so casually.
