i think the internet is good. honestly i don't know what i would do without internet. we need it for school and i think it's great that we can have sites (like this one) where you can actually be yourself knowing that no one will judge you because you don't know anyone. and you can open up and tell your true opinion on things, not your "carefully edited for my friends" version. maybe their should be an age that you should be allowed to have access to the whole internet, but our society revovles around technology and internet. it's like a whole nother world and no one should be left out of it. it's great. yay internet!
yea this morning the internet didnt work for 2 minutes and i almost cried. the internet if great if people want to watch porn then thats their choice. i mean online predators are sickos but thats not our faults. they should be locked up.

I still remember Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) making his "internet is a series of tubes" speech about how the internet should be censored only to large corporate websites. It scared the hell out of me. I can think of nothing more BORING than if the internet were limited to only a small amount of the sites that are on it now. I think a solution for the bad sites is parental education. If parents can teach their kids not to click on pop ups or go onto strange sites at the age when we actually listen to our parents that would help.

I peronally think the Internet is good.
- It provides a way for you to stay in touch with people in an age where families are moving further and further apart across the world.
- It helps you out with schoolwork, work, or other important things.
- It helps you to find out more about the world around you.
- It helps to intoduce you to new ways of thinking.
- It is a place where you can meet other like-minded people.
Having said that, I think everyone has a duty to use the Internet responsibly or not to use it at all.

Kids should be taught how to use the Internet properly at quite a young age. If they aren't, they won't have a clue about it, and they will probably need the Internet in a few years for schoolwork or other things.

Parental blocks are the best thing ever, providing they're used right and the kids can't figure out how to disable them. I mean, I don't want my ten-year-old sister clicking a pop-up that leads her to a porn site.

Internet addiction is becoming a problem, though. I mean, it's like a substitution for TV or going outside and playing with other kids. That and the debt people can run up on gambling sites or eBay.

But what peeves me off most about the Internet is how it becomes a scapegoat for everything.
Kids are too overweight. It must be the Internet's fault because there are websites for junk food and kids won't go out anymore.
People commit suicide. It's obviously Myspace/Bebo/whatever 's fault because you had the chance to talk to people that you don't know in real life. Hey guys, guess what the "private profile" button is for??
People bitch about each other. It's MSN's fault, of course. Because people don't bitch about each other in real life *rolls eyes*
Parents, stop blaming everything but yourselves. If you had taught your child how to use the Internet and how to be even slightly "normal", they wouldn't be posting nude pictures of themselves online.
Remember when you were little and you said "I heard that he said that she said..." It's just the same today! The only difference is that some people post it online rather than saying it in real life.

And, finally, we only panic about Internet predators and conmen because the media tells us that they are around and to fear them. If you look at the other side of it, how many people have found long-lost relatives, new friends, new partners, jobs, houses, everything through the Internet and never had any problems with it, or suffered in any way?
The media only reports the bad things because it's a seller. People love a tragedy.

The internet is obviously a great necessity that we take for granted these days. In my opionion I think the internet is fine when used safe block certain chat sights for young children, and porn sites. I think if the parents take good percautions of the kids being on the internet then its fine. As long as the internet time is controlled in moderation to much time on a computer isnt exactly healthy and if they get into to much it can take over their life like professional gaming for example.

Here is my take. The internet is extremely valuable, but also very dangerous.

Example: promoting/street teaming for bands. I am new here, but I am involved in another band's site and do a lot of promoting there. Unfortunately, the band signed to a label that is not doing shit to promote them..people don't even know that they exist. However, myspace when used correctly, and message boards, can create that which the record companies can't/won't. Another thing, lack of education is the downfall with so many people - when you have the resources to be safe and play the game of life with the least amount of drama and roadblocks, then you have a better chance. Information being so readily accessible is a great thing. I don't know how many times I have thought, damn 15 years ago this would have been tough to find. I am glad for the technology.

It's also got it's obvious flipside. I don't even want to get into the sick shit that happens when you can hide behind an avi or fake info. You all know exactly what I am getting at. Unfortunately, it's gonna happen. However, if you are careful and use your brain, then you can, most of the time avoid this stuff. The people that get hurt are the naive types, that have the gift of giving the benefit of the doubt. You kind of have to see the internet for what it is, a cyber world in which people can be who they don't want to or can't be in real life. It's just judgement that you have to use.

As far as age goes, that is a tough one. I do believe that there should be laws with age limits, but I have no idea how that could be enforced. It seems like it would be up to the parents, seeing as you can't have the net police in yoru house signign you up and making sure you play by the rules. Unfortunately, parents are not always going to want to be involved. It's a good idea, but I don't know if it's realistic and possible.

Just my thoughts..

The internet can be a good thing or a bad thing, I have met the love of my life on it, I mean, it can be great. Can't wait to meet my love a few years down the road, and I've proved who he is. So in some respects, I'm not afraid, but I don't go throwing my info around either. It all depends on how you behave on the internet, as others have said. I couldn't live without it, not because I'm addicted but because I have people behind it I need to survive at this point in my life. It's complicated, I don't have alot of time to put into this post, sorry.

parents probably should restrict what sites children of a certain age go on. they need to be more responsible when their 10 year old kid is free to look at any site.

but... i'm pretty sure the world would be lost without internet.

i don't think /i'd/ be able to live without it.

Dr. Cox: "I'm fairly sure that if they took all the porn off the Internet, there'd only be one website left, and it would be called Bring Back The Porn." lol

Is it good?, Is it bad?. Why/why not?.
neither, its a thing, it cant be good or bad.. the ppl that use the net, they are good or bad, but not the net itself..
and to damn the internet because there are some "bad" sites would be like banning all books just because a few of them where crap...

Do you think parents should be able to block sites and/or restrict you
from going on sites that aren`t porn related, etc?.
thats their decision, if they dont trust their childern then i guess they have to...

Do you think you should be a certain age before it`s even legal
to use a computer?.
nope, but just like tv, the parents have to guide em and teach em a healthy way of using computers and the internet..

Do you think computers should be used for school and business related only?.
hell no, life is worthless without internet!

u will never be able to prohibit the internet... first of all its just to important for all business stuff, one day whitout internet and our economy would colapse, there would be billions and billions of damage...
second, there are too many internet-crackheads like me who would go on a rampage if someone steals the net!!

Actually, I am banned from a number of sites, including but not limited to fanfiction.net, quizilla.com, shimlar.com, and many, many others. My mother uses a program to monitor what I type and where I go. That's why she is not yet aware of the wii's internet capabilities.

a few weeks ago at school this chick came in to talk to us about cyberbullying and internet safety and whatever. most of us were around 12 - 15 years old.
she told us that she has recently been to some schools and talked to children that were around 10 years old. she asked how many of them had myspace, and at least half of them put up their hand. then she asked how many had msn, and alot of them put up their hands.
when i was little, i had msn, but if some random added me i would not talk to them at all and just block them. but now alot of silly little kids will give out personal info to some sicko who could track them down.
Then she told us that giving out very small bits of info about yourself on different sites, could easily be pieced up together and someone could track you down. She also said to google your full name and see what comes up (in case there is stuff out there that you dont want randoms to know)
She said that once this girl was tracked down because the netball team she played for had stuff on their website about her. The stalker then tracked her down, but luckily she realized and the police got into it and whatever.
And people could always hack into your msn or myspace and send bitchy and mean messages to your friends. Supposedly hacking into people’s accounts isn’t that hard. Someone hacked into my myspace once, I changed my password straight away, but they had already deleted everything off my space.
I guess the internet is awesome, but there are just some creepy people out there.
I don’t think I could live without it. The computer stuffed up a few months ago, and I didn’t have internet access for about a fortnight and I was having separation anxiety.

I was wondering, would anyone here meet up with someone they met on the internet, in real life??

I would. I have.
I met my fiance in the internet and we've met three times in real life.
I plan to meet my best friend Liz face-to-face before she's my maid of honour at the wedding.
I also made a mistake and met a kid from MySpace online. He was who he said he was, but it was a mistake.
I was going to meet another girl online and that was an even worse mistake.

Basically... be intelligent about it and it's really not a problem.

i dont think that the internet should be banned to children under certain ages, necessarily, but i do think that parents should monitor the history on the child's internet use. i think its all about education more than anythign when it comes to myspace and giving out personal info

I think the Internet is a fantastic innovation. Although, parents should be mindful of what there kids do on the net.

On a lot of computers these days, it comes with an inbuilt filter than can be switched on and off in Internet Options when you click on the Internet. I think that parents need to block certain content from their children, but generally, I think Internet usage should be encouraged.

i definately think that the internet is a good thing in most cases... i know that it's saved my arse on a few occaisions that had to do with last minute papers... lol... other than that... i think it just depends on what you use it for... for instance... i think that this forum is definately one of the better things about the internet... it's a way that everyone can express thier own opinion... other than that.... it's definately a way to help people better understand the things that are going on around them that they might otherwise be oblivious to... but i think it all comes back to what you use it for that determines if it's good or bad...

I think it's important to remember that pornography exists everywhere outside the internet too. When people chiseled into stone tablets long ago, there were markings carved into the town walls directing people to public baths and whore houses. When people started using paper there were artists that illustrated sex manuals. When moving pictures were invented, there were people who made risque movies (for their time, anyways). When television and magazines came about, they were mirrored by adult channels and adult magazines. The internet can hardly be blamed for showing porn. It just made it cheaper and easier to access.

Pornographers, pedophiles, rapists and murderes have always existed in the real world. It's only natural that they should exist in the digital world as well.
