The Doctor Salute You in Your Grave Age: 33 Gender: Female Posts: 2094 | Where do you think our morals come from? Do you think that society dictates our morals, or the other way around? Are you a Moral Relavist (Someone who believes our morals can change depending on the situation) or a Moral Absolutist (Someone who believes our Morals cannot change). Discuss. |
Beeblebrox Really Not Okay Age: 44 Gender: Female Posts: 688 | I think you begin with a set of morals learned from your parents and that at a given point in your life, you can and often will adapt those morals or change them depending on your life experience. So, I suppose that would make me a "Moral Relavist ". I was raised in the south U.S. where many things were considered immoral and unacceptable by society. As I grew up and moved out of the south, I realized that I disagreed with some of those morals and adpated to a new, adjusted set of beliefs. |
Catharsis Jazz Hands Age: 37 Gender: Female Posts: 261 | I think that from birth we attain a set of morals which are acceptable in the society in which we live as part of our socialisation, we take these on without questioning them because it is what we see as the norm. We dont have much life experience at a young age to question them. As we grow up and we experience life, we develope our own personal views and our own set of morals, (or these morals may remain the same) which will somewhat be influenced by our family and surrounds but they will have deeper meaning then the ones which we simply took on as children. I think that our morals can change all the time through things like world events, learning new information, living in new surrounds, our experiences will continue to influence our morals, either strengthening them or changing them completely. |

Obviously, when you're growing up, you tend to have the morals of the people around you. But as your grow up and make your own decisions, usually your morals change. I know mine did. |
Eight Bitter Years. Killjoy Age: 28 Gender: Male Posts: 48 | we control our morals and society should not have power over our morals and thoughts. |

I don't believe that we /create/ our morals, that they are completely ours. I do believe that society has a very big effect on what someone considers "moral" or "immoral". Say, you might adapt the morals of others around you, like some people above have said. I know I have. |
blow Bleeding on the Floor Age: - Gender: Female Posts: 1137 | I believe that society shapes who you are, so society would definitely play a big part in what your morals are, but they would also be affected by what you have experienced in life. I'm a Moral Relavist though, when you're put in extreme situations you find out what your real morals are, and I think that people would do a lot of things that they say they would never do. |
Ierosistible Killjoy Age: 59 Gender: Female Posts: 54 | I think originally our morals are influenced by our parents and those around us. I like to think that as people get older they transform into their own morals, be they the same or different than the originals instilled in them. I think there is a vast amount of "following blindly" what society hands down. And I think there' s a huge amount of people trying to dictate what our morals should be, cramming their own morals down our throats. Example. Where I live there's this guy protesting an Abercrombie & Fitch photo hanging in a mall. It depicts a well built male body with only low slung jeans on. He wants it removed because it's "offensive" and he doesn't want his kid seeing it. So he's started a petition to have it taken down because the store said sorry, but no. I have major problems with this. My viewpoint is that he's teaching hid kids there's something wrong with seeing the human body - what's that going to do to the kid? And he wants to subject everyone else to the morals of one group. What about those of us who aren't offended? We don't count? Morals are our own. Other people have their own. No one should be forcing their morals on anyone else. |
