xxRawr_Its- Juliexx Killjoy Age: 29 Gender: Female Posts: 2 | Last year I went to a private school and personally I hated it. They were SUPER strict about everything. Plus none of the teachers were even from around here, they were all from up north and I never got that. I used to not try because i didn't like the school and my grades were really slacking. My dad let me decided where i wanted to go to school so i chose public school. now i am doing alot better in school. |
Tallulah Admin Age: - Gender: Female Posts: 16777215 | I teach in the state sector and an a ex state-school pupil myself. I am totally opposed to private education. Everyone should be entitled to a first rate edication not just those children who's parents earn more money. Good education should be for all not just for the rich. If these parents put money into local state schools they too would have better equipment and opportunities. If the money was shared around and the elitism was reduced the standards would be raised in all schools. I went to a below (as far as results are concerned) average secondary school and left with 3 top grade a-levels before going onto University. My brother did the same and went to Oxford and now has a PHd and works for the Medical Research Council. The fact is, if you want to work and achieve well in life, state or private school makes no difference in my opinion. You can achieve just as much in state school as in private school. I just don't think it's fair that a childs education should be decided based on how much money their parents earn. |
Heroes. Fabulous Killjoy Age: 32 Gender: Female Posts: 120 | I think the idea that private school is better than public school is completely false. I have a problem with parents who say the public schools aren't living up to their standards. It is not the teacher or school's fault your child is stupid, it is your fault for not demanding more (mentally retarded kids are different) out of them. Similarly, if your child is 'too smart,' then you as a parent should meet with the educators to ensure your child is challenged properly. Move them up a grade, put them in advanced classes, do whatever it takes! The only reason private schools are seen as better is because they are stricter. They can do whatever they wanted because they have no rules set forth by the government, so they can demand more out of the students, which is what the parents in public schools should be doing. Public schools are 'failing' because there is such a lack of parental involvement in students' lives, particularly in poor neighborhoods. The parents there are busy working all the time, so the students have little to no direction in their lives, so many of them find themselves not caring. Of course, this isn't only in poor neighborhoods, but that is where it seems prominent, to me. Sorry for the long post, but this is an issue I feel strongly about. |
beautiful loser. Really Not Okay Age: 31 Gender: Female Posts: 644 | Private schools are more strict, but they give better education. I go to private school, and I learn a lot more there. Also, the classes aren't huge and have a million kids in them. There are small classes and not too many students. It just costs too much. |
Ignore Alien Orders Salute You in Your Grave Age: 34 Gender: Female Posts: 2026 | If parents invested more time and attention (and money, in the cases of people who can afford to send their kids to private school) in the public school system, then public schools would be more like that, no? |
Mindfuck Always Born a Crime Age: - Gender: Female Posts: 5614 | I think the issue between public and private education differs from place to place and country to country. Here in Australia (or maybe just Adelaide, I don't know), it wouldn't matter how much time and attention parents gave to the school. Here, the government is notorious for spending a lot more money on private education than public; which means that the public school system is somewhat of a poor cousin to private school system. Public schools rely not just on school fees etc. from parents, but also government funding for bare necessities. I have a public school education, and quite frankly, I'm not ashamed of it. A lot of people seem to think that private education automatically equals a good TER (Tertiary Entrance Rank) for getting into university, but that is simply not true. I got quite a good TER and I got in quite nicely to what I wanted to do at university, and there were a handful of students I went to school with that got near-perfect scores. I think that private schools just have a better reputation. Because even when it came to the uniform, I noticed their uniforms were much more immaculate than ours - and I think that alone gives off the impression of a good education. |
Tallulah Admin Age: - Gender: Female Posts: 16777215 | pikachu!:Sorry but i don,t agree. I teach classes with very low numbers, one of my classes has 12 in it, my school is also quite strict, with a zero tolerance programme. I would not say that my pupils would get a better education just because their parents pay for it. My school offers excellent education for free. You say you 'learn a lot more there', does that mean you used to go to state school? Did you not learn anything there? Just interested to know. |

HEY AMY Salute You in Your Grave Age: 33 Gender: Female Posts: 3503 | Tallulah; Schechter: Also, adding onto that. [And I'm pretty sure I've said if before, also]. All schools in the state would follow a particular syllabus. So it's not as a private school is going to teach more than a public school. It's mostly up to the teacher and the student on how well the student does [mainly the student]. And to tay82 that's just ridculous. Really... |
Heroes. Fabulous Killjoy Age: 32 Gender: Female Posts: 120 | Audio Geography.:This is exactly what I think. Instead of sending your kid to a private school because you think it's better, why not send them to a public school and get involved and see that your child and others get an as good, if not better education. Oh, and p'!'atd, I got permission from Steff to make this thread. |
thank fsm. In The Murder Scene Age: 36 Gender: Female Posts: 20564 | p'!'atd: I gave it the green light; figured it would end up too big on its own to go in a general thread. Sorry! ^^; |
RedRiot. Salute You in Your Grave Age: 32 Gender: Female Posts: 2482 | I am against private schools. They are just helping to futher segragate society in terms of social class and income. Just because your parents may not earn as much money as others or you come from a lower class doesn't mean you shouldn't be intitled to the same education than those who can pay for it. I think instead of one family paying for their child/ren to go to a private school for a better education, I think the money would be much most useful if given to a state school, along with money from the government. This then ment that children that could not afford the equipment or resources needed could then be given a grant to help pay for the equipment. I would also like to pose another question here Do you think there is still sexism in these schools or does it just happen in one of the schools? |
HEY AMY Salute You in Your Grave Age: 33 Gender: Female Posts: 3503 | ^ Not all people who go to private schools are incredibly rich. I go to a private school, and sure, my family is fairly well off in that sense, but we don't have much extra money. I've only ever been on two holidays, and they were short, and never out of the country. Most of the money earned goes towards my education. And anything I want to buy (eg. clothes, phone credit) comes out of my own pocket from a part-time job. I definately don't agree that it segragates society. |
Mindfuck Always Born a Crime Age: - Gender: Female Posts: 5614 | RedRiot.: I disagree. You're pretty much saying every person who attends or has attended a private school was well off, in terms of money. Though that is arguably true for a lot of the people there, there are some who are on scholarships, and there are also those families who might have an average income but they want to send their child(ren) to a private school because of whatever reason. I believe that private schools should be available for anyone who is willing to cough up the money for it. I believe there is a place for both public and private education in society. However, here in Australia at least, I do not like the way the public education system is treated by the government. Sure, they get funding, but no where near as much as private schools. If the funding gap was fixed, then I wouldn't have a problem. But I don't see why children who are public schooled should be any less off under our government than privately schooled children. If there was only one type of schooling, then class segregation would still happen. You'd still have the 'haves' and the 'have nots', because after all, we'd still have specific occupations with a social class stigma, i.e. if you're parents are high flying lawyers, then they would appear to have a different class than cleaners etc. purely because of occupation. So the class segregation is not just apparent in schooling, although it does happen. |
IceHog69 Bulletproof Heart Age: 32 Gender: - Posts: 25232 | I personally have been to both a private school, and a public school (American International, and Belleville), and I can say from experience, that I recieved a better education at the public school. At the time when I attended it, it wasn't a particularly good school, but I still learnt the things I needed to learn. When I went to the private school, I did find that there was much less intergration between groups; there were more prominent cliques. I found that they had different ways of teaching, and I know that was simply because they were two different school. I found the method, of seperating students into groups according to ability, and giving them work appropriate for their level worked better, as it meant that you could always be pushed (public school). At the private school, there was a test you had to sit, that determined what year you would be put into, and, as I am a summer birthday, I couldn't be put in the year above, so, I was put in a class which my parents felt didn't push me enough. Although in the private school, there were more defined cliques, in the public school, they were more extreme. At the private school, there were the groups of people, but you would move between them reasonably easily (ie, if you were a geek, but you dressed nice, or you were sporty, then you would be allowed to hang out with the posher kids, or the jocks) whereas, in the public school, there were the posh kids, and the not so posh kids. You could only move down, and once you went down, you couldn't come back up again. I think that it was partly because of the fact that they were going to a public school, they felt they had to make up for that, by showing off more. I didn't see any more sexism in either school, although, in the private school, because most of the kids were white american, there was the occasional racist comment, but they were usually accidental, almost general comments, about a different race (HIJ for example). |
lorilee krizelle. In The Murder Scene Age: 32 Gender: Female Posts: 21370 | I never studied at a public school before, I've always been in a private school. I think that private schools, gives better education to their students than the public schools can. Why? First of all, since the number of students per classroom in a private school is way more less than in a public schools, it would be easier for the teachers to know who is not getting the lesson and such and they can help them. Second, there's far less bullying in private schools. Third, there are more facilities and such at privates schools. Fourth, well this is my opinion but they really give better education. studying in a private school may be really costly but i think its worth it. |
IceHog69 Bulletproof Heart Age: 32 Gender: - Posts: 25232 | ^how can you know what the education is like if you have never been to a public school? the education is the same, and in a lot of public school, the classes are small. I personally found I got bullied more at the private school than at the public school, although, I did enjoy the private one better... |
