no, we're not doing enough to help ppl with HIV or AIDS cuz theyre dying anyway. yes they have pills 2let them live longer. but maybe ppl shouldnt have unprotected sex or do drugs.

People most certainly shouldn't have unprotected sex if they don't know if their partner is carrying an STD and people shouldn't do drugs while sharing needles.
But we can't stop them.

Yeah we should take precautions and educate ourselfs much more. Many people in the LGBT community (From what I know) aren't as cautious as they should be. But education is a must in helping stop this disease.

Pardon? AIDS/HIV is not simply a LGBT problem.
Did that stereotype go out of fashion in the 80's?

Dru, I believe you misunderstood what Syd was trying to say.
She was saying many are not as cautious, not that all were at higher risk.

HIV is statistically higher in the GBLT scene, mainly because of the higher
ease of transfer. It is, without contest, easier to contract HIV through anal sex
than it is through vaginal sex, because the vagina is built with more elastic cells
and with a higher resistance to friction, (ie, it is built for reproduction), while the
lining of the anus and lower intestine is very delicate, so it is very easy to cause
lesions, which are a direct doorway for the disease into the body.

The same with oral sex, the more oral sex, the higher the rate of STDs,
mainly because it is difficult (for females at least) to have protected oral sex.
Any oral piercings or lesions make the rates skyrocket as well.

Higher rates of oral and anal sex do make is (in general) easier to contract
a disease in the GBLT community.

Ok, so I live in South Africa. There are 1 200 000 orphans in my country, mostly because of AIDS. Around 5.5 million people are thought to be living with the virus (there's about 47 million ppl in our country). The South African National HIV Survey estimated that 10.8% of all South Africans over 2 years old were living with HIV in 2005.

I know that everyday I am surrounded by people with AIDS. It's a living problem here. Not just something we hear about, but it's alive. We have a subject here in scool, called "Life Orientation" that all children between grade 3 - 12 HAVE to take. It's almost like sex education. In other words, every single day of my life I have to learn about AIDS, I hear stories of ppl my parents' friends worked with who died because of it... I don't want to sound disrespectfull, but ppl from countries outside Africa- you don't worry enough. I've read some of your posts, and most of you is concernd how ppl don't enough enough and should protect themselves. With all due respect, AIDS isn't something out there ppl should be warned about. Here in Africa AIDS is ALREADY killing millions of ppl all around. Only in my country (The richest African country) more than 600 000 ppl die every year of AIDS. If only you could live a couple of weeks in my country, to actually see the impact of AIDS. The world has no idea what's going on in Africa. Not until Oprah or Bono comes around. Africa is dying, I wish you could see what I see.

Sparklinggrey - you are right, we have a less shall we say informed view of AIDS and what should we do, i guess because many of us have never met nor seen the effects of AIDS except as you say when Oprah or Bono come over and they show it on TV.

Too many victims of AIDS are innocent people and children in Africa who need our help and we just don't give enough. The world is an incredibly sad place when so many innocents are lost.

i think that we need more AIDS education. the first step to preventing the spread of the disease is to get people informed. getting as much information out about it is a huge thing that would help to stop the spreading of AIDS. if people know how to protect themselves, it's going to help slow the progression and reduce the number of people infected. too many people are affected by this terrible disease, and anything that can be done to help end that once and for all is probably something we should be doing.

^ yeah but it'll still happen, and sometimes there is no way to stop it, like if the condom brakes or an infected misquito bites you. but can't we get a better meds for it? or get it more availiable for those who need it.

^ i agree with you. there are a lot of things that can't be prevented, which is unfortunate. i do think that getting better meds and trying to find a cure are still very important, yes, it's just that there are many instances where AIDS is spread that are preventable. this is why i think we need to educate people, so the cases where spreading can be prevented, it is. basically what i'm saying is that i agree with what you said, but i still stand by my original statement as well.

it's not "easier" to get it through gay sex. in general, you get AIDS by exchanging body fluid with an infected person. because the disease is (or at least used to be) more common in the gay community in america, lots of people still see AIDS as being a "gay disease". it totally isn't. most people say it's easier to get it through gay sex because they assume that if you're gay that there's a higher chance your partner is infected. but nowadays, you hear just as much about straight people with AIDS as you do gay people, at least in america.

You guys need to look at the big picture. millions of ppl in africa are dying of aids every day. in south africa, one of the african countries with the better statics, around 27 kids are orphaned because of AIDS every hour. how do you want to educate these people basketcasex39? most of them dont own televisions, even more cant read and thousands were raped and had sex against their will.

so honestly, why ever if aids are spread through gay sex easier or whatever... wear a condom. full stop. and start worring about the millions of people that's already got the disease. it's too late to start educating people, it's too late. words and pictures won't help anymore, we need action

^How could it ever be too late to stop educating people? If anything, it's too late to help most of the people who have advanced into AIDS. Education is preventative, and though it's obviously an extremely difficult task, it'd do far more to stop HIV / AIDS than trying to cure people who already have the disease.

What are your thoughts on HIV and/or AIDS? Are we doing enough to help victims? Are members of youth today well-informed about it? What precautions should we take to help decrease the number of those infected?

I really don't think that members of the youth today are well-informed.
Until a few months ago i didn't even know what it really was, what it did and that you can die from it!
I mean come on I'm 15 I'm gonna start getting sexually active if not already, so i should know these things! We need more information about it.

Well, HIV/AIDS is a great epidemic in our world today. It's also sad how many innocent people have been afflicted with this disease. Personally, I want to do all I can to help all those victims, which is why I want to become a research pharmacist and work in the lab to create new medicines and pills and (hopefully) a vaccine or cure for this disease and many others. As for awareness, education in schools needs to be increased on this. We never even discussed HIV/AIDS in my health class and pretending it's going to go away is wishful thinking.

You can't get HIV/AIDS from a mosquito bite or any other insect bite.
