My Chemical Romance and how they saved my life:
The first time I heard My Chemical Romance was somewhere in the year of 2005. My cousin was watching MTV and their video, Helena, came on. I watched it with her and thought it was a cool video, but I never enjoyed that kind of music genre when I was a kid. Somehow, I liked this song. After that, I was forced to move to another state away from all my friends and family and it broke my heart. Only six months later I moved back to my hometown, excited as ever and we found a house (that I still live in) about a year later. It was then that I heard Welcome To The Black Parade on the radio and I loved the song. I had no idea that that was the same band I saw almost two years ago. My friend got me The Black Parade for my birthday (March 2007) even though I hadn't asked for it. But she told it was an amazing cd so I listened to it. I loved it! Every song, I felt like dancing--which is pretty scary considuring I can't. They were instantly my favorite band. After a while, I bought Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge and again, I loved it. I got Bullets and started buying posters to hang on my walls. Once I got Life On The Murder Scene, I was addicted. It was my heroin. Around the beginning of this year, my family started getting a little worried about my attitude, clothes, dislikes and likes, things like that. They blamed my music. But the truth was, I didn't listen to MCR much at that time. I earned a friend who was a very bad influence on me. She didn't want me listening to them. I started wearing my eyeliner super dark, I let my studded belt hang around my butt, but those were minor things, it was like I was sucked into a dark hole. I felt like cutting, possibly taking Benadryl before school just to feel happy and peaceful. I even thought about snorting drugs. I still remember that night when I wrote a suicide note to my father (but I didn't give it to him) and I was only 13. Somehow, I managed to look on the bright side and started listening to the first MCR album. When I listened to Headfirst For Halos and heard the line Think Happy Thoughts I mouthed the words and danced while laying down on my bed and felt happy. I put the song on repeat and fell asleep to it, suicide not even crossing my mind. I am now anti-suicide, a member of the To Write Love On Her Arms movement, straight edge (I don't smoke, drink, or do drugs), I am a peer helper/leader at my school and help kids, and I am not depressed anymore. The fact that five guys playing guitars and drums and singing on a mic saved, not just mine, but many lives is mindblowing. But they're not just five guys to me. They are five saviors.

February, My Chemical Romance posted a bullitin on Myspace with a list of shows they were doing before their break. I clicked on it in curiousity and my heart stopped when I saw they were playing in Portland. I had to remember how to breathe, but when I did, I screamed like the little obsessive fan girl I am and ran around the whole house. Only a week later, my mom bought me and my friends tickets for it and I looked forward to it for two and a half months. When the day finally came, my dad drove us up to Portland and to a comic book store where Gerard was signing autographs, two hours before the concert, for his comic, The Umbrella Academy. I still haven't read all of them, but I will, trust me on that. We were 30 minutes behind, thanks to one of my friends so we tried our best to weave threw the heavy traffic. My friends and I ran two blocks in deep puddles, hearts pounding, tears rolling down the sides of our faces just to find out we were late. By 10 minutes. But that didn't stop us. We waited outside with our faces pressed up to the big window of the store and stared. It was Gerard Way. My knees buckled, I felt like falling on the concrete but I stood tall and watched as he smiled right at us. A little while after that the security guards told us to get off the street and we watched him get into a car and take off down the road. Already, it was the greatest day of my life. We headed to the Crystal Ballroom (very beautiful looking room) and got inside in less than 30 minutes. At first, we were searched for anything illegal. It was pretty cool. After we were all checked, we ran up the stairs, adrenaline pouring into my vains, and ran into the dark, crowded room. We missed some of the opening act, Drive By, but we didn't mind so much. I bought MCR fingerless gloves and I still wear them. Billy Talent came on and I liked them after the first few songs. The lead singer was full of energy, bouncing around the stage and that made me even more giddy. After all the inticapation, My Chemical Romance came out on stage. Wow, Gerard looks hot. Whoa! Bob's hair is really long! I want his socks though. Love Mikey's shirt. Aw, I can barely see Ray. Frankie, hmm, what guitar is he using? I thought. The first song they opened with was Sleep and I sang every word, tears building up in my eyes. My dream was coming true. After that, Gerard said hi and asked Are You Ready To Die Tonight? and the guitar started and we sang along to Dead! and danced like crazy. Gerard was a crack up, Frankie started smoking while playing guitar when signs were everywhere saying Please, No Smoking, Mikey cracked me up, Ray was fantastic, and Bob was awesome. The last song they played was Helena and we were very sad to leave, but everything was replaying in our heads as we walked out into the cool, windy night which was perfect because we danced so much that our hair was sticking to our dripping with sweat faces. We all agreed it was the best day ever. We also made a promise that we would go to every show, when they came to Oregon or somewhere in Washington. To this day, they are my favorite band and they will always have a place in my heart.
Be yourself, don't take anyone's shit, and never let them take you alive!-Gerard Way
