i taught myself to play guitar aswell
the best possible way to start off on a guitar is to start on a acoustic guitar
from there your gonna find the electric guitar easier to play
plus you already mastered some chords on the acoustic so keep on going on teh acoustic
(there cheaper then electric guitars awell Wink

I'm on the same boat as you. I've been researching different types of guitars, gathering opinions, trying to find out how to teach myself, etc. Except I've never played in my life, and I'm looking for an acoustic, since, as she mentioned, I heard it's best to start with that rather than electric.

So my best advice is research. xD Which is kind of what you're doing in asking here anyway. ^^

A lot of people will say it's easier for beginners to play on an acoustic, because it usually gets your fingers tough because of the thickness of the strings. I personally started on an electric, by chance, and I play an acoustic just fine. But with an acoustic you usually don't need an amp, and you won't need to buy as much gear. Plus, it's ok not to have effect boards because that's getting advanced for someone just starting out.

I think it's essential that people learn to read music. That was you can read the stuff if you start gigging, and you can remember what you play by writing it down.
At the same time, you should start out with simple finger excersises to get you fingers strengthened. Learn symbols and more chords to make basis' of songs, and learn to pick if you'd like to be a good lead guitar player.

Hope all goes well!
