The proper work really starts on October 21st. Yesterday was pretty much turning it on and testing everything was working right, so any problems can be rectified now before they begin.

Didn't they just shoot the beam today? Not actually colliding anything?

According to my science teacher, they did collide it. Or at least I think that is what he said. However, Ive been told that collisions like the one they are trying to create happen every day when cosmic rays hit our atmosphere.

Also, my friend's science teacher told him that if a black hole was created, it would collapse before it could do any damage.

However, that can just be teachers trying to make us teens feel better.

to be honest, the whole experiment frightened me. I stood awake all night last night, crying because I felt like I was going to die today.
comcast.net. had an article on the experiment, and a member at CERN said that the Black Hole theory was complete nonsense

Even if it did make a black hole, it wouldn't destroy the earth the day it was created.
It would take approx. 5 years.

Your science teacher was wrong, it was just sending a beam around the complete circuit and then around the other way, There's no collisions until the 21st of october at the earliest.

It's not even going to be at full power until next year so your definitely safe until then.

What your friend's science teacher said is pretty much the general consensus between physicists. If it could create a blackhole of any real size, it would have happened already from the cosmic rays hitting the atmosphere. The only option if a blackhole were formed (there's very little reason to think this would happen) is for it to be beyond microscopic. If Hawking radiation proves to be true, it'd would collapse well within a second. If hawking radiation isn't correct, then it depends on what you read as to how quickly the earth gets destroyed, anywhere between five years and one hundred billion.

hang on.
i thought black holes happened when massive stars collapsed in on themselves.
so like, wouldn't that mean, they'd have to have made a huge, super hot star to get a black hole?
which would have killed us anyway, we'd be burnt to a cinder.
and the star wouldn't go out for billions of years.

i have no idea. i don't even know if that was strictly on-topic, but eh.

& to be honest, i'm for it. i know there's a risk and all, but there's a risk in crossing the street,
and we all do that pretty calmly.

We aren't exactly sure what causes black holes, but most believe that gravitational collapse of a star causes a black hole, but they can also be created in high energy collisions (aka large hadron collider).

Black holes are mostly theoretical, because we can't study them yet. However, the leading scientist in black hole research, Steven Hawking, said that there was no chance of a black hole. So I felt reassured.

oh. that makes sense, now, why everyone was worried.
thanksss. (:

The people who are conducting this experiment and doing all of the research are super-genius physicists and scientists, you must not forget. They've already considered the ethics behind this and the risks. I trust them totally Very Happy

So the actual colliding is beginning tomorrow apparently.

Although I've heard rumors about something happening meaning their not alloweed to do it.

No colliding until the spring at least. There was a fault a while ago with some of the magnets and they planned to shut it down for winter anyway. There's nothing to worry about but it hasn't even begun yet. Even once it does start, it has to build up to full power.

shit, I was so scared . I was crying all night before then I cried when I said goodbye to my mum in the moning because I thought it would be the last time I ever saw her Sad then when I got to school I started crying, because there was like one minuit left before the experiment was about to begin, and everyone was counting it on the clock. but then nothing happened, so everyone started cheering Very Happy I've never ever felt so relieved !!
I definitly thinkthey shouldn't have bene doing it ! its just stupid and dangerous.
