Sisters spread happiness while brothers increase distress, researchers believe. Do you agree?

Ulster University quizzed 571 people aged 17 to 25 and found those with sisters were more likely to be happy and balanced.

Researchers said daughters made people more open and willing to discuss feelings, whereas brothers tended to internalise problems.

They found the influence of girls was especially important in dealing with distressing family events, such as divorce, when discussing emotions can be crucial.

Do you agree with the findings? What role do your sons or daughters play in your family? How have your siblings influenced your life?

I think it depends on the people.
And i don't think there's any way you can investigate it anyways. You can't establish cause and effect, it could be something entirely different that caused the findings.
Personally, I have 2 (15, 11) brothers and 4 sisters (10, 9, 7, 6). And I find the brothers less stressful. The girls argue all the time. Yes, they're all still young, but I find teenage girls to be really bitchy, so it'll probably continue. The brothers don't even get on, and the girls do, when they're not arguing. When boys don't get on, they tend to just not speak to each other, whereas girl have screaming matches.
But, I don't know what it will be like when we're all older.

it definitely depends on the people.
i have two brothers (aged twenty-five and ten) and two sisters (aged twenty and seven).
i also have a cousin who spends a lot of time living in our house, who's also ten, i count her as a sister too.
(i'm fourteen btw).

based on my family, my older brother (when he lived with us) just was quite happy to listen to music all day,
my older sister (when she lived with us) tended to have arguments over phone/msn all the damn time.
my younger brother has Asperger's Syndrome so is calm most of the time and happy to just watch Doctor Who with me,
and my younger sister is pretty calm too.

so based on that - my family kinda disagrees with that; my brothers are calmer while my sisters, cousin and i cause the most noise
and discord in the house.

so i'd say, it just depends on the people. :]

My mum heard something about families with sisters keeping in touch better when they leave home. Which seems to be true for my family. It's my mum who suggests her brothers come through. And my Step-Dad only has a brother and they don't get on. We only see him when he comes round to drop of birthday presents, and vice versa.

Sisters can be annoying too, though.
My brothers are actually less annoying than my sisters.
It purely depends on the people.

I've got four sisters so I wouldn't know much about brothers.
How have your siblings influenced your life?
Aren't girls with brothers usually more confident around guys (?)

i dearly love my little brothers, they are sweet (though irratating) and help me when they are in a good mood. they even pose for my picture obcession. My older brother i loved, he bailed out on me though during the divorce between our dad and my mom and for that i will never forgive him.

I agree with tear though, growing up in a frat house has helped my confidence with men.

I only have sisters (16, 8 ) so I have no experience of brothers, but I'd say it depends not only on the people but on how old you are compared to them. You're probably more likely to find younger siblings annoying (especially if they're far younger) and view older siblings as more like role models.

This is purely my opinion though Smile

I depends on the person.
You can't really rely on studies.

I have an older brother [23] and hes always been there to protect me
and watch out incase if I don't do anything stupid or I'll regret.
I didn't have a father growing up,so my brother was kind of like my
father figure. When boys broke my heart,I'd have his shoulder to cry on.
When he would hug me,I would feel safe. Just like any other girl who
would feel safe in her fathers arms. I love my brother to death. And we
never fight.

But somtimes,I want a baby sister.
I would buy her cute little dresses, shoes and decorate her room all cute.
Do her hair when she gets older. And when shes in her teens, dating,
I can help her out, tell her to guard her heart and that she will get
broken hearted, but she can come to me.

Alot of my friends that are girls think their younger brothers are annoying.
My guy friends think their younger sisters are annoying.

It just depends on the person.

Neither. It really matters on how your relationship is with that person. But honestly I would say a brother, because I have one who's nice and senseful, and not a d*uchbag. Guys can be either sensible or nimrods (from my experience), either one or the other. It matters what kind of person your sibling turns out to be, whether it be a brother or a sister.

.
I think most of us agree that it depends on the people. Also, I think it depends on how your parents bring you up.

It really matters how the brother's and sisters are. They can be down to earth people or complete dicks. They can be good influences or bad influences.

I actually think I am going to lock this. Thanks everyone for your contributions, but I don't think this is going anywhere since we're all in agreement.
