So, I've read articles where Gerard and co. say that their music and musical career is at least partially inspired by the trajectory of the Smashing Pumpkins, and I've always felt that there was a real correlation between each MCR album and the corresponding Pumpkins album.

Dangers Days was to correspond with Adore, and I was excited to see what, if any, connection I saw. So are there any people out there who like the Pumpkins enough to notice that:

In S/C/A/R/E/C/R/O/W, there's the lyric "count to seventeen and close your eyes," ala 17, the last song on Adore, referencing the album insert "17 seconds of..."

I can't overstate how cool I found this. Cool enough to register on a forum for this first time since billy-corgan.net got shut down.

P.S. The rules I have to click on the bottom are great and I feel very certain I'm violating the spirit, if not the letter, of them.

i'm not locking this thread because i like this thread a lot already, and i think it can spark some convo

i've always felt like their albums corresponded with the pumpkins
gish = bullets (the beginning, had "rawer" sound i guess), siamese = revenege, mellon collie = tbp (theatrical and epic), and now adore = DD (with the new experimentation and no drummer)

I also love how after TBP Bob was gone and when Mellon Collie was done Chamberlin went too.

I ALSO ALSO thought s/c/a/r/e/c/r/o/w was very pumpkins-esque when i first hear it

I'm a novice enough MCR fan to have not been entirely aware of Bob's disappearance. Though I did wonder why he didn't get a cool action hero name. That symmetry is beyond cool/creepy.

So, I got pretty into this theory and spent a crazy amount of time developing it. I don't want to venture into tl;dr territory, so I'll just say:

The whole Pumpkins story line was, to me, about Zero/Glass's relationship with June. Each album was a snapshot of that process: Gish, hopeless idealism and a lack of awareness of what lies ahead ; Siamese Dream, angry denial and a belief that the problem can be vanquished with ease ; Mellon Collie, the horrifying realization that things are going to be more complicated than you anticipated and won't always work out right. I'll stop there to compare with MCR...

MCR, essentially representing the post-9/11 generation which is biding time 'till the end of days (amiright?), goes through the same stages (oversimplified, stuff like anger, loss, acceptance) across their albums. Siamese Dream + Three Cheers = anger, revenge, denial.
MCIS + Black Parade = forced acceptance of loss/pain

Aaaanyway. Some thoughts I have sometimes. And I never really focused much on the obvious similarity in theatricality between Mellon Collie and the Black Parade... sometimes I get too caught up in plot lines to notice that things sound similar too. Very Happy

I definitely agree with this!

Also, a lot of you probably know this already but I remember reading an interview where Mikey says that he and Gerard were at a Smashing Pumpkins concert at Madison Square where they basically realized that that is what they wanted to do with their life and that's when playing there became a big dream of theirs. So I mean it would make sense as to why they would wan to model their career after them I guess, since that band was huge for them.

Also, funny I should come across this thread, because I was just thinking, Gerard's voice realllllly sounds like Billy Corgan in parts of The Kids from Yesterday.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who picked up on the Adore references in the lyrics "count to seventeen and close your eyes" of S/C/A/R/E/C/R/O/W. It is my favourite song off Danger Days and the other day I was thinking back to the "17 seconds..." thing in the Adore album along with the track itself, 17, and it seemed like a relevant connection. I actually did I Google Search of it, and coincidentally ended up in this thread, as opposed to a completely unfamiliar site like I was expecting.

Reading through this, the idea of MCR corresponding in such a way to the Smashing Pumpkins really appeals to me. I'm definitely taking to some of these theories, as it would not surprise me at all what with the Ways being avid fans of SP and everything. MCR have always seen them as an influence, and it's just really cool when these things are picked up on.

So I have to agree that there are some pretty evident links between their respective albums, as well as parts of specific songs.
