As long as you can hear if it's in tune i think you can pick up any string instrument. I started when I was six, so that probably helped a bit. In a way it's like when you play a clarinet you know where to put your fingers without looking after a while- it's like that but more complex.

...Sorry. Had to say it. As far as finger stripes/tapes go, I had them for my first year and a half or so before my lessons teacher pulled them off and started yelling at me for being out of tune.
