I've never seen this topic here before, so I'll throw it out there. It's always piqued my curiousity. So what do you think of Furries? Does it cross any boundaries? Does it support healthy lifestyles? Would you consider it a true lifestyle or just a fetish? Just how far should the role-playing go? Is it any different from any other RPG / Fandom environments?

DEFINITION:
Furry / Plushie fandom is a fandom distinguished by its enjoyment of anthropomorphic, often humanoid, animal characters.

ROLE-PLAYING:
Furry fans create anthropomorphic animal characters in order to engage in internet role-playing and are known as "fursonas". The longest-running online furry role-playing environment is FurryMUCK. Another popular online furry social game is called Furcadia. There are also several furry-themed areas and communities in the virtual world Second Life. There is currently a furry massively multiplayer online role-playing game titled Antilia in the works.

COSTUMES:
Fans also build elaborate costumes called fursuits, which are worn for fun or to participate in parades, conventions, masquerades, dances, or charity events. Many fursuits feature simple construction and others feature more sophisticated construction that includes moving jaw mechanisms, animatronic parts, prosthetic makeup, and other features. Fursuits can cost upwards of $1,000. Some furry fans pursue puppetry, recording videos and performing live shows.

ARTS:
Furry fans participate in the arts, including amateur and professional illustrators, comic strip authors, painters, sculptors, writers, musicians, and craftspeople. These artists produce a prolific amount of drawings, paintings, stories, comic books, fanzines, puppets, and small press books, as well as sculpture, textile art, fiction, music, and photography. Some artists also produce a wide variety of erotic artwork, which is a subject of controversy both inside and outside of the fandom.

CONVENTIONS:
Sufficient interest has enabled the creation of many furry conventions in North America and Europe. The largest of these is Anthrocon held annually in Pittsburgh in July. In 2006, more than 25 such conventions took place around the world.

SEX:
Sexual aspects within furry fandom include erotic "yiffy art" (from the subculture term "yiff" referring to sexual activity or arousal, supposedly derived from the sound Arctic foxes make when mating), and pornographic movies of sexual activities between participants wearing fur suits.

I thinks it's just some fetish for people who like animals. Meh, whatever floats your boat, I have no objections to it.

Well, I kind of find it a bit weird... but whatever floats your boat.

It depends on who you talk to about it. For example, I've grown to dislike it because of a friend who wouldn't stop talking about it.

But it might have it's good points; I wouldn't know. Seems kinda old-fashioned-Disney-ripoff to me.

I agree that it's weird possibly even disturbing but hey it's all done by consenting adults (one hopes) and it's not harming anyone else so whatever you want to do is your choice. It's kinda in the same league as S&M it's not for everyone but it is around.

I guess it's kinda a branch off beastiality in a way, but a much more tame and acceptable version.

Agreed. I mean, it's kind of weird, but if people are into it, then let them have it their way.

Well, I guess you really can't knock what goes on between consenting adults. So long as they aren't going after kids or anything... or even real animals.

I started this because I have a friend who is getting into the stuff, like making costumes and etc. I'm just not sure how I feel about all of it. Does anyone know anyone into that sort of thing?

I'm mostly familiar with the aspect that was popularized by anime/manga. I've seen tons of 'anthro' artwork (most of it is somewhat provocative) that can range from just a person with ears and/or a tail to a humanoid form that is covered with fur and may or may not have an animal like snout. and 99% of it is of girls. The number of animals that are portrayed as half human is amazing, everything from tigers to foxes to goats.
It seems to me to be more of a fetish. Going so far as to make costumes seems a bit much to me. I don't really understand it, I mean I might find it cool if I had a tail or ears but I don't really get the obsession with it.
It existed long long ago with mermaids. Back when people believed mermaids existed people would get obsessed with finding one. They where supposed to be extraordinarily beautiful.
Even further back in greek mythology there where 'furries'. The greek god Pan had the hindquaters, legs and horns of a goat. Pan and Dionysus where companions with a troop of satyrs.
The list of furries goes on and on. Fauns, centaur, minotaurs, sirens, harpies, sphinxes, ect.

I also agree with the comment that it is a tame form of bestiality.

I sleep with my Pokemon plushies everynight. They help me sleep better. But when people are a little too obsessive, it's a little freaky. I guess in some cases, it's ok like the fan stuff. But the sex stuff is just scary....

I've never even heard of this.
I must admit I laughed when I read about it though. Laughing

I don't really see a problem with it.
Whatever gets you off I suppose.

I don't really have an opinion on it - sounds weird but harmless. There are a lot of unusual fetishes out there.

To me it is just a fetish. It's a taboo fetish, but it's a fetish nonetheless. I actually find a lot of fetishes quite interesting.

I noticed a really old old post ^^some where up there that stated "it's just some fetish for people who like animals". Well, not necessarily. Some people who are into this just like the role-playing aspect of it and it may not have anything to do with being attracted to animals other than humans. I think role-playing is a huge part of it rather than wanting to have sex with, say, a dog or a bear.

For some people, being a furry may not even be about sex or sexual desire.
