Posts: 78477 | March 22nd, 2008 at 08:33pm He brought rock & roll to the masses. There were plenty of black folks singing that stuff, but he was the first white guy to dare try it. He admitted, himself, that he didn't have the greatest voice, (although I would disagree. I loved his voice). It was more about the entire package. He was gorgeous; tall, handsome, jet black hair, blue eyes. Not to mention, he was the coolest man alive. He had charisma, sex appeal, style. Whatever "it" is, he had it - and more. He had everything it takes to be a superstar.
As far as being a pompous ass - yeah, probably. Most famous people I know are, though. I never hold that against an artist. I should say, I never hold it against their art. If I like a song or singer, I could care less what kind of a dad he is or what his political bent might be. If I did, I would find something to hate about everybody and I would never like anybody's songs. Sinatra was an asshole, as was Pavarotti and John Lennon - but lord could they sing. I think we ask too much of an artist if we expect them to be nice. Same with Presidents. I don't care if a President is nice or he cheats on his wife. I just want him to run the country right. Some of the greatest presidents we had were huge pricks of all ilk; cheaters, gamblers, womanizers, etc.
