April 19th 2008- Gerard Talks About 'Emo' Bashing.

I was on the Kerrang! Website earlier today, and then I saw they had something about Gerard talking about the 'emo' bashing In Mexico. =/

This is what I read:

My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way made an impassioned plea from the stage at the Zero Festival in Mexico City, Mexico last Saturday (April 12) to curb the recent spate of attacks on 'emos' in the country.

Last month a mob of angry teenagers attacked three 'emos' in Mexico City, setting off a wave of anti-emo and homophobic violence that spread from the capital to the border towns of Tijuana and Juarez.

Addressing the mainly teenage crowd, Way pleaded for unity among the assembled throng.

This is what Gerard said:

"We've heard on the news that there have been some violent attacks in the country against people labelled as 'emo'," began Way. "We are here for a rock show. We don't want to see any violence here tonight, against emo people or anyone else."

Do you think all the people who are classified as emo are just going to get hurt worse? Or do you think his statement is actually going to help. I think it's really stupid and disgusting how these people are being picked on.

This article on the Kerrang! Website also said something about 'homophobic' people, which really get to me. What do you think?

That's interesting. What you had there was a bit different than what was said in all the articles I found.

Even so I like what he did, a lot. I knew he would at some point and was starting to get worried when he didn't.

Yeah, i read on another site that Mexican kids are going on "Emo Hunts" and simply attacking them for no good reason...

leave those emos alooooooneeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!

I think that was very diplomatic of Gerard. And I'm very glad he addressed the issue; it has been weighing on me for awhile. Thanks for posting that. :]

This really moved me a lot. I dont understand why emo-bashing even exists; i dont see what threat they are to society, but as usual there will always be small-minded idiots who let their ignorance-fuelled fear get in the way of common sense.

I agree, it's just sick that there are people who attack people by the way they dress, the music they like, etc. It's just bad stereotyping, the 'emo' kids never did anything harmful to them :/ Thank God there's Gerard Way, though. :]
