Russia is trying to pass a bill to ban the emo/goth subcultre to help stop suicide/self-harm. However taking away a young person's way to express themselves will only cause more depression and lead to more of what they are trying to stop. Please please PLEASE sign!

http://www.gopetition.com/online/20748.html

Also discuse what you think about the issue. Because it could lead to worse bills limiting one's self expression more then this is.

Somehow, I doubt an online petition (or any, for that matter) will really matter to the Russian government. Especially if it is signed by mostly teens.

Yeah, but you can always try. Fighting for what I believe in is one thing I learned from MCR, so I'm applying it.

Russia banning emo, is hardly my concern when it comes to Russia. I'm more worried about the political situation. Not that I have much info on it, but things seem to be getting shady over there.
Anyway I would hardly call 'emo' expressing yourself, it's a cliched stereotype, try being yourself.

And Chris Martin is right an online petition won't matter to them. I don't think anyone really pays attention to online petitions.

First off, dont see how an indivudual is expressing themselves by dressing up like everyone else, if anything it would probbably make people think outside being an emo.

Secondly the russian government is stone cold, it wasnt longer than twenty years ago that the country was in the closing stages of communism, not alot has changed, i dont think a petition would sway a russian goverment.

Some ways of 'getting away with being emo'.

I heard that Russia has also tried to ban The Ramones(?) and Elvis before...Needless I say it didn't work, so I doubt this will work either.

It wont happen.
It's ridiculous.
How will they police it?

^ Exactly
And I highly doubt it will make any impact at all in the teen suicide rate.
Kids will still be depresed and feel alone. Why not try and fix that, not take away their freedom of expression and choosen identity?

I hate Russia. I think this is the least of their worries. The Russians are mean, evil, people.
But, I have to agree if you take a culture away it's not gonna matter and all of a sudden make teens will stop self harm/ depression. They will still do it. Maybe more than others because the taking away of their style can be hard to deal with. It's a way of expressing yourself and taking that away can make you feel trapped.
On the other hand another thing I agree with, is that no online petition will stop these Russians. Believe me I know Russians and nothing will ever stop them. And if teens are the ones putting this out than they really won't pay attention to it. I suppose trying isn't bad though.

How can they inforce this?
It's not going to work,
stopping kids looking "depresessed" and listening to "depressive" music is not going to reduce the suicide/sefl-harm rates.
There are many different reasons why a person feels depressed, often it stems deeper than "it's the in thing to do" or "cause I look good" .

What beats me is why Russia aren't concentrating on their own real political problems instead of getting worked up over some stupid fad

Cool to know that you've met every Russian, then.

[/tangent]

Honestly? I wouldn't worry about it. If you really have an imagination, then you'll find some other way to express yourself. Besides, you're not doing a very good job expressing yourself already if you're buying into a subculture where you look the same as everyone else. Like other people have said, I doubt one measly petition signed by non-russian teens is going to do anything at all.

This passage here is probably one of the most narrow minded and borderline offensive things ive read on this site. I suggest you appologize for all of your statements concerning people from Russia or people with Russian heritage.

Back on topic I think expressing ones self isn't confined to ones outward appearance i think that ones outward appearance is merely a minute detail of ones personality. If the way you look to other people is the definitive expression of ones self that just shows that you really haven't exercised all the other ways to express your self.

Bulgaria was a bit of a slave country to Russia 19 years ago and all the things the Russians did,the Bulgarians followed.I believe that listening to emo music doesn't make people emo and the Russian government is a little bit overreacting.I hope that Bulgaria won't follow Russia's example against emos, because I don't want MCR to be forbidden or something (no matter that they aren't emo at all in my opinion)

Choosing your fights is also important.

Unless I guess you thought you could go to Russia and protest there - but even if we got plane tickets there, I don't think the protest thing would go over at all.

Not that it isn't a damn shame. I just don't think there's a point to an online petition.

Come to think of it, how is that even fighting? It's a couple clicks and a few keys hit. It's not even really effort. =/

I don't think this will actually happen. You can't define "emo". Unless they dress everyone in military uniform, there's no way to really police that.

And, I'm part Russian, so I must be mean and evil. SCORE.
