If it works, do it! There's that whole thing with the "power of beleif" like the kind of people that are healed by holy water, but only the ones that believe. I mean I'm not even sure that that's true, but i recall hearing it somewhere.

How DOES a 23 y.o get arthritus anyway?? lol lol lol poor you people! Is it true that you can get it from cracking your knuckles? If it is then i am a true contender, oh crap. anyway.. ......

Not really. I have chronic Rhumatoid Arthritis and if I crack my knuckles, I'm in agony, and before i developed it I used to crack them all the time.

I was on a placebo trial once.

I didn't feel any differences though, when I was given the placebo.

I think it's pretty cool as well...how our minds can convince us. I heard that for studies..they take two groups of people. THe tell one group that they are getting placebos and they are really giving them medicine, while they tel the other group they are giving them medicine, while they are really giveing them placebos.

It reminds me of the movie Matchstick Men with nicholas cage.

Thing is, you can get addicted to the pills and rely on them... even though they don't have real proprerties. You'll start thinking that you actually NEED the pill, which can cause stress and worsen the problem.

The only thing I find wrong about it is that they're lying to the patient. Even though that's pretty much the whole thing, lying. If they knew what they were actually taking they wouldn't even think they were getting better.

Yes. Alot of drug companies do trial runs with one half as the real drug, and the other half a placebo. If the first half gets better faster than the other group, then they know the pill works more than just ming over matter. It's also not lying - the testers sign waivers saying they know they have the possibility of getting a placebo.

I think it's a good idea. The only thing is that I think there are some ilnesses that obviously could never be helped by the placebo effect alone.

If placebo works, cool. But if you're charging the same amount, don't you think it's fishy since doctors are known for digging in your pockets for the last cent?

wouldnt they just charge you less, or find some way of making it seem like youd payed, [like saying its part of the doctors bill] ?

I think the placebo is a d=good way of trialing drugs but they really should do three groups: real thing, placebo & nothing.

i always thought placebos were used for people who think they have an illness, but actually don't, they're just paranoid (hypachondriac i think its called?) so doctors would give it to them so they 'feel' like they're getting better?! even though they aren't ill in the first place? if u get me?!

anyway, i think they're good for that reason ^ if that's what they're used for, other wise, isn't it just putting patients in uneccesary pain? Neutral

I know I'd be really pissed if my doctor gave me a placebo. I expect to get what the doctor is telling me I'm getting. It doesn't even matter to me which works better.

Legally, I don't think you can be given a placebo unless you're aware that there's a chance you might (as in studies), or possibly in the case of hypochondriacs where nothing can be given anyway.
