To me it sounds like someone he's loved has died, and he's just going through that period of depression, and feeling like everyones treating his sadness as a spectacle (sp?) [And did you come to stare, or wash away the blood?]

and also remebering the person.

[Rocking out just for the dead
Well tonight
Will it ever come?
I can see you awake anytime in my head]

Yeah I think it's that too
I cry when I hear it because I have a friend who died

I love this song... It is truely one of my favourites. My band for music at school are doing a version of it but with guitar, piano and drums... It sounds gorgoues (not as good as the original song though) The song really speaks to me, every time I hear it, It takes me away and I picture it in my head,,, I can;t explain what I see though, kinda the music in images... Hard to explain... I cried when they played it live .

i think its about gerard and his addiction to drugs
From the lights to the pavement
From the van to the floor
From backstage to the doctor
From the Earth to the morgue

like about what he went through when he was doing them.
i dont know if that what it really is but thats what it means to me Smile

i think it is his feelings on someone he lost.
it also could be a reflection on his life up to the point when he wrote the song.
he wanted to change himself & stop his addictions so he could save himself.
no one was helping him so he had to help himself.

for me personally, this song is about how brutally beautiful sad and everything else life is and you just gotta hang in there

its about losing someone you deeply love. (i can see you awake anytime in my head). and he is going through the depressed moment of life because of the loss, then he is thinking about how it could have happened, (did we all fall down?) Crying or Very sad

One part that I'm pretty sure I get is the party where Gerard says:
'From the lights to the pavement,
From the van to the floor,
From backstage to the doctors,
From the earth to the Morgue-"

I think that this part is about his addiction to alcohol and drugs. A lot of times backstage he'd fall out of their van and how he had to see a doctor from some incident backstage.
'From the lights to the pavement' is probably how he either passed out or it could mean that his addiction kind of gave him a bad reputation. {i.e. No one wanting to be around him, afraid that he would get drunk.}

Yeah, I think it is about his drug abuse, depression, and alcohol abuse. He felt as though people were watching everything he did, and he muse as felt as though his life and troubles were just entertainment for others..
Well, that's what I get from it. (:

.....and that's probably why he sings it with so much emotion, because it is about him self and he regrets what he did.

Sort of marks the end of "Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge" era. Love Gerard's voice in this song. I watched a live vid of this song on youtube and before it started, Gerard said the song was something about being in a band. : / I dunno really what it's about haha. Don't ask why I'm commenting in this then :/ I'm just saying what Gerard said in that vid.

The two predominant theories about this one, substance abuse and the loss of a loved one, right? Now, I've done a few minutes of thinking, here, and perhaps it's both? Like, Gerard mourning the loss of himself to drugs and alcohol? And perhaps how people just observed because the band was all hectic in those days. (Brian said that, because he was managing the Used and My Chem, Gerard drinking was just Gerard drinking, it was what he did.)

We hold in our hearts
the sword and the faith
Swelled up from the rain clouds
Move like a wraith
Well after all, we'll lie another day.
And through it all we'll find some other way
To carry on through cartilage and fluid
And did you come to stare or wash away the blood?
(The pain of addiction but the hope of getting clean,
and perhaps attempting it and finding other ways to
go about life with this dead, addicted self? And,
again, people spectating and watching him kill himself,
instead of helping.)

Well tonight, well tonight will it ever come?
Spend the rest of your days rockin' out
Just for the dead
Well tonight,will it ever come?
I can see you awake anytime in my head
(Mourning his former self that could function
without any substances.)
Did we all fall down?
Did we all fall down?
Did we all fall down?
Did we all fall down?
From the lights to the pavement
From the van to the floor
From backstage to the doctor
From the earth to the morgue
Morgue.... Morgue.... Morgue
(It's been said by a lot of people
how like, that means from fame to
ruin sort of. and i completely agree.)

All fall down, well after all....
(Nooooo idea. O_O)

Now, that's just general, and probably way-off but it's another person's opinion for ya. xD

I think I agree with this Smile

A theory I have for the "All fall down" bit - maybe he's saying that eventually, through his drug/alcohol addiction, he brought everyone he cares about down with him? Not in the sense that he led them to addiction themselves, but in the sense that maybe once his problems came to light, everyone would have been worried about him, and wondering how they didn't spot it earlier (and feeling guilty because of this)? Just an idea Smile

i agree with everyone that said they think this is about gerard's previous addiction to alcohol. Whenever i hear "from the van to the floor" i picture gerard falling in "life on the murder scene", which also happens to be the collection this song was first released on.
