I think that this song is about a couple. The girl betrays the guy and because of this, the guy's brain just went blank and he started hurting her and abusing her. The lyric "I dragged her down,I put her out, and back there I left her where no one could see" is the source.

I think at the moment that the guy kills the girl, he also killed himself by drinking poison. He decides that he doesn't want to go through the pain anymore.

when the guy drowns her does he keep drowning her until she's close to death then pulls her back out???
"and tomorrow we'll do it again"
so he keeps hurting her again and again?

"dressed in red and blue..."

these were the colors of the pills that gerard took back when the band first started. the red ones were antidepressants and the blue ones were narcotics, and he needed both just so his brain would shut down so he could go to sleep at night. he mentions these pills in "Headfirst for Halos" as well when he says "the red ones make me fly and the blue ones help me fall..."

just a thought.

I thought it was about this couple and their relationship wasn't working out, but she kept on wanting it to work (wedding gown) but he keeps insisting it wont work.

i thought it was about a guy and girl, the guy wants to be with the girl desperatly but knows he has no chance so he kills her and basicly keeps the body and then dumps it in a well 'And lifeless cold
Into this well' thats him dumping her or 'hiding'
her and basicly keeps her lifeless body for purposes i woulld rather not describe

okay, what if maybe just maybe the songs not really about physicallly abusing someone. I like to think that he's saying he ruined her life, like, killed her old self or something...idunno, that's what I got out of it >_<

i read someplace, that if rice grains and roses are placed at your feet, it's like a....dedication to death. like if someone was about to die, they'd place rice grains and rose petal around feet. i can't remember where it's done, but i deffinatlly remember reading it on some site.

this has to be my favourite song.
i think its about a tragic love story.
more like "if i cant have you, nobody can"
so he kills her and shortly follows so that they can be together in death.
woow.

Yeah, i sort of thought something like that too. Maybe by saying "and dressed in red and blue I squeezed" he means after taking those pills he drowns her.

That sounds really cool. I thought it meant in the first part of the song he's imagining them getting married "imaginary wedding gown" and that the "as rice grains and roses fall at your feet" part was when people throw rice and roses over the bride and groom.

I think that this is just a part of Early Sunsets Over Monreville, here this song shows the grief and sadness of the man as he is pulling of the task of killing his beloved.
The name Drowning Lessons, I believe, comes from the way he is as he is pulling of the task: he is drowning in his grief and sorrow, and he is showing the listeners how to drown in sadness as well: By being forced to kill the one you love to save her.
Hence the word lessons. Add them up, and you have Drowning Lessons.
When he said that "and dressed in red and blue I squeezed", I think it means he took pills mainly to bolster his resolve, since normally he loves her so much that it was literally impossible to kill her.
The parts, "Without a sound, I took her down", and:
Without..
Without a sound
Without..
Without a sound
And I wish you away
Without a sound
And I wish you away
Without a sound, without a sound
And I wish you away
Without a sound, without a sound
And I wish you away
Without a sound, without a sound
And I wish you away...
I think it means he killed her, without making a sound. His grief and sadness was could not be epressed with words, or actions. His sorrow was just too powerful.

I too think itz about when he was on drugs "and dressed in red and blue I squeezed" cause those are the pills he used to take and when he took them they made his sorrow worse because she was cheating on him so he eventually drowns and kills her hense the name "Drowning Lessons" then kills himself so they can be together in death "as rice grains and roses fall at your feet" "i never thought it would be this way just me and you here alone". So basically I think this song is about him not being able to handle the pain of his girl cheating on him so when he starts taking the drugs and they don't help so he thinks the only way to be together with her loyally is for him to kill her then kill himself so they can be together. But that's just what I think I may be wrong it just ties in with another song so it makes sense. Well Ima out. l8r.

that's exactly what i thought
the whole pills thing

Lets say goodbye,
The hundreth time,
And then tomorrow we'll do it again.
Tomorrow we'll do it again.

maybe about trying to quit? but failing it everytime?
