never coming home. Bleeding on the Floor Age: - Gender: - Posts: 1526 | So... Is the draft right? Should the age limit be higher or lower? Is it right that only men are required to sign up? Should it be reinstated? What are your opinions on it? *I apologize if there is already an existing thread. |
Ignore Alien Orders Salute You in Your Grave Age: 34 Gender: Female Posts: 2026 | Well...I don't think it's right. In its context, I guess the age is alright, although I think it's a little odd that you can go to war before you can drink a beer legally. As for only men...well it's kind of necessary. You need a substantial group of people who are definitely going to be left here to keep working, taking care of kids and the elderly, etc. Defining that by gender is probably as good a line as any, even though it does seem a little sexist. As for it being reinstated, no. Not only because of moral issues against the current war, but because reinstating it would just be an illogical move for the government to make. I can guarantee you that people would start rioting, with the rate of dissaproval of the war in this country. |
Beeblebrox Really Not Okay Age: 44 Gender: Female Posts: 688 | NO. NO. and NO. The draft is wrong. The real crisis is that we wage war to begin with, not that we lack enough troops. The draft infringes on human free will. If they reinstate the draft, young men will run for the borders and burn their draft cards just like last time. |
Diet Coke Killjoy Age: 30 Gender: Female Posts: 22 | i dont agree, it also sounds sexist.. but i think there is something like, its instinct for most men, if they see a woman get hurt, to instantly go help her. or something. thats why women aren't allowed front line in the army. well thats what it is in england. so..they have their reasons. idk if they are good enough though. |
Ghostgirl191 Jazz Hands Age: 32 Gender: Female Posts: 288 | well the age is fine because 18 is when you are an adult, women shouldnt be excluded from it just because they're women, thats sexist, but i dont think the draft is right or fair. because if you dont want to fight in the war than you should not be forced to. we want to bring the troops home, not send more into battle! so if the president, and congress wish for more troops, then they are to be the first ones to sign up, every single one of them. and if they dont want to go to war themselves, then they can all shut the hell up about it, every single one of them |
Diet Coke Killjoy Age: 30 Gender: Female Posts: 22 | ^^ good point |
Diana_a7x Thinking Happy Thoughts Age: 31 Gender: Female Posts: 456 | Ghostgirl191: YES! I agree, thats a great point. Oh btw, shouldn't the troops in Iraq be home by now? |
DeadInTheWater Fabulous Killjoy Age: 30 Gender: Female Posts: 128 | no, its evil to force people into joining the army conflict may be against their beliefs or they could be pacifists, its just evil |
stac-renee Killjoy Age: 51 Gender: Female Posts: 35 | NO THE DRAFT IS NOT RIGHT AT ALL...I BELIEVE WE SHOULD TAKE ALL OF THE CRIMINALS IN PRISON, PUT CAMMO ON THEM AND SEND THEM TO IRAQ |
RedRiot. Salute You in Your Grave Age: 31 Gender: Female Posts: 2482 | I don't agree with the draft as I don't think it is right for people to sign their life away to the government without knowing whether they would be called upon or not. That constant fear that you might be torn away from all you know and love to fight in a war which you may not agree with would be really hard for that person. If however they were going to resinstate it then I think they should include women who vouluntaire(sp) to sign up for it. We women should be no different from men, thus meaning we should have the same oppotunities as them even if it is a dangerous thing we are signing up for. |
Rock Steady Salute You in Your Grave Age: 35 Gender: Female Posts: 3755 | Well I believe that National Service should be brought back in the UK. As some kids are getting into too much trouble and have no respect for others. they are lazy and inconsiderate. i mean i am fed up of turning on the news and hearing some 12 year old has murdered someone. The service would teach them some respect and would teach them how to look after themselves rather then relying on everything being handed to them on a plate. |
xhead1st4halos94x Fabulous Killjoy Age: 30 Gender: Female Posts: 158 | absolutly not. i mean how is the draft different from slavery? i mean what is a bit of money worth if your missing an arm or a leg? what about families? What does our country become when me make our own citizens fight battles that we cant fucking deal with peacefully. DRAFT IS WRONG |
sir_pleb Jazz Hands Age: 33 Gender: Male Posts: 303 | The draft shouldn't be reinstated because there's no particular reason for it. The current war is pretty small by past standards. But also, people conducting studies on world war 2 found that only 2% of allied troops shot to kill. The other 98% would just shoot in the general direction because they didn't want to kill a man. What the army does nowadays is just recruit the 2% that will kill (which I believe is the reason Iraq was such a mess), so why would they want the rest? (Be warned, those figures are from my notoriously dodgy memory, they could be miles out) |
Littlemisschem Fabulous Killjoy Age: 31 Gender: Female Posts: 129 | The draft is completely and utterly WRONG! No one should have to be dragged off to war when it is against their will. That's just wrong, taking them away from their families and loved ones and not knowing when they'll come back.....that's awful. As for the age limit, I think it should be higher. Who'd want to be drafted into a war right when they're just starting their own, independent life? I really don't have a problem with only having men required to sign up, because I really wouldn't want to have to be whisked away to some foreign place where all I'm gonna do is hyperventilate and beg to come home. I don't know many women/ladies/girls who'd want to get a letter saying they have to go to war. That's only the choice of some women. I don't have a percentage or anything, so I don't really know if I'm speaking the truth.... The draft should NEVER EVER be reinstated..they should get rid of it. |
morris bernard Killjoy Age: 45 Gender: Male Posts: 7 | the draft will never be enacted because its really unpopular with the masses and no politician wants to have their name associated with it. the only way they would ever bring it back is if WW3 broke out and the enemy was on the doorstep. otherwise this is one of those hot button issues used to motivate the base to stand up and take action even though it will never happen |
Go fuck yourself Devil's Got Your Number Age: 30 Gender: Female Posts: 37823 | I think it's fine if there only is men allowed, I mean women carry babies, what if there is a draft and a pregnant woman who volenteered her services and our country desprately needs can't go because of that? they'd have to go through all the trouble of picking someone else. But I think someone should only be drafted if they sign up for it and their name on the list is regualer updated. |
Mr.Armstrong Awake and Unafraid Age: 36 Gender: Female Posts: 12135 | illustrated_romance:mm yeah i kinda agree with you on that. You have to think about why women can't be drafted before you say its sexist and sure there are women in the army but different parts, Nurses, etc etc. thats not bad, |
eslizard Salute You in Your Grave Age: 31 Gender: Female Posts: 2476 | I think the idea of signing up for the draft is a good idea in itself- people can offer their services to protect and serve the country they live in. I dont think it should be mandatory though. People should be allowed to choose whether or not they want that duty. and on the whole 'men and women thing', i go with what i said above- anyone should be allowed to sign up if they want to serve and protect their country. but when women sign up, i believe they should have a different priority than men. when someone signs up, whatever they have to fill out paper work wise (i dont know the specifics about it) i think there should be a section for women about whether or not they have/are planning on having kids in the near future, and anyone that checks yes should be put as a lower priority on the list. because honestly, it wouldnt be of much use to have a woman go into labor in the middle of something important, and thats extremely dangerous to the child and going off of the priority list, i think that there should be several criterion for what priority you are. things like age and paternal status (are/ going to be parent) should determine it. i.e, a 22 y/o, healthy male who has no legal/paternal commitements to anyone should be higher on the list than a 22 y/o healthy male who is married and have a young son. this is mainly based on personal experiences, but no child/husband/wife should have to worry about whether their loved one is alive and safe everyday when they wake up in the morning and every night when they go to sleep. granted, no one should have to go through this, but to me it seems that paternal and marital bonds are generally stronger than bonds between an unmarried couple. on the age thing, i think 18 is a good age for it because thats when everything else in their life starts. at 18 your out of school, some times no longer living with your parents, can legally be charged as an adult. i see no reason to prevent anyone that is 18 from signing up for the draft- since they are no longer under their parents control, they can do what they want with their life. anyone younger than 18 though, should not be allowed. they are still considered minors. if the law wont let them do anything else, why should they be allowed to do this? plus, (from what i understand) the United States Military requires you to have a highschool education or the equivalent of one to join |
sir_pleb Jazz Hands Age: 33 Gender: Male Posts: 303 | Everyday: Isn't that basically what the US has in the Reserves? |
GhouliaYelps Jazz Hands Age: - Gender: Female Posts: 255 | The mandatory draft wouldn't work, especially not since its been the other way around for a long time. I know other countries still have it in effect and i also know that in those countries most people try and avoid it. If the politicians need people to fight their wars they should do it themselves. |
