My gosh, it can cause rifts can't it?! One of my best friends is a Liverpool supporter. When Liverpool reached the European Cup final a couple of years ago [not 2005] and there was a chance they could be playing against us [Manchester United], we made a pact that if Man United reached the final to play LFC, we wouldn't let the result, either way, affect our friendship. We said we wouldn't even TALK about the result! Alas, United never made it to the final anyway XD
